"the onion" takes on WDW

That's funny.

Of course, it's easy to see how some people could feel that way. The Unofficial Disney Guide describe many WDW food services as 'pricey', and at one point they lament the cost of the $7.50 hamburger. I work in Manhattan, and I wish I could find a decent burger for that cheap. Admittedly, NYC skews one's perspective, but a $150 hotel room and a $25 all-you-can-eat meal would be bargains up here.

As for the (very funny) bit about staying on the paths, who can blame WDW for being lawsuit-phobic? They're probably the world's biggest target for spurious litigation. And the bit about all the tension and angst of a WDW vacation can often be brought about by over-planning and over-scheduling. Sometimes the itineraries look more like space shuttle launch schedules.

Still, funny article.

Am I missing something???

I didn't really seem to find the humor in that article... it just sounds like people complaining, and complaining really isn't all that funny.

Maybe it was supposed to be sattirical, but to me, it missed the point.

The satire to me, Eeyore0062, is that there are people who actually have attitudes like this fictional family.

If you open your heart to the magic it will find you. If you go looking for negativity that will find you too. Interesting how that works :)

I'm a fan of The Onion and all, but this really wasn't that funny. It had the potential to be, but it wasn't.

They (the fictional family) completely missed the point, which was what I thought was funny.

"Why did Disney have to ruin the Disney magic for everyone?"
I dunno. I think it's funny...

I thought this was very funny! My DH had forwarded it to me at work during the week and I got a great laugh out of it!:D

Was it supposed to be funny? I missed it, too. But I WILL suggest that maybe Abby wasn't frightened by the Country Bears, maybe she was frightened by having parents who couldn't see the amazing dedication in a Cast Member who can BE cleaning up vomit and still have a smile for them.

Just sounded like a gripe session to me. If it was meant to be funny, I definitely missed it.

Jay since 72,
Have you tried Dallas BBQ for a good reasonable burger. I think they have a few locations in NYC and a website. Stumbled on it after paying the double prices at TG Fridays, so we had already eaten but friends we had met later hadn't. We snacked and it was good and the most reasonable eats I have ever had in NYC.
We have noticed that WDW sit-down prices have outpaced our area quite a bit. Not looking forward to when we have to pay for an adult meal for our 10 year old.

I thought this one from September 2001 was on the mark:

The WDW "article" was ok - I see the humor in the self promotion/merchandise part of the Disney Co (I am not an Eisner nor a Pressler-Who-Has-Fallen-Into-The-Gap fan). It wasn't as good as most of the other articles I've read there.

Thanks for the laugh - I haven't been to the Onion website in a long while!!! :p

Average. It wasn't one of the Onions bests. Could have been so much more, there is a lot of material to work with.

The other two made me LOL. A good skewering of Disney DOES make me laugh, but this one didn't.Gee they had so MUCH fodder there but it didn't come off funny just sorta whiney IMHO!

I agree, they could have done much much better

This one had the quality of cold oatmeal.....

Thanks

I thought it was a riot! It was funny.

Of course, I see how some people may find more realistic than others

About cast members :
"They were always wearing these hollow, insincere, glued-on smiles, whether they were selling you a $6 croissant or strapping you into the 'It's A Small World' ride and genially ordering you to keep your hands by your sides at all times," David said. "The creepiest example was the guy outside Space Mountain who said hello to us with a big grin on his face as he was on his hands and knees cleaning up vomit."
I thought he met the old man working the lines at MK's monorail with this one!

The Mahaffeys were reluctant to return to the park on the second day, but they decided to soldier on, determined not to waste the $832 they'd spent on four $208 "Park Hopper" four-day passes.

Upon learning of the Mahaffeys' less-than-positive experience, Disney spokeswoman Jennifer Caldwell expressed regret: "We endeavor to make our theme parks the ultimate in family fun, and if this was not the Mahaffeys' experience, we are deeply sorry," Caldwell said. "Perhaps we can make it up to them with four complimentary tickets to the upcoming feature film Pirates Of The Carribean, based on one of our most popular Magic Kingdom attractions. Don't miss this exciting swashbuckler, in theaters nationwide July 9."
Well, take it for what it is worth: That exceeds what many get for complaining!

I thought it was a neurotic thread, satirizing some truth but hillariously funny

I agree with the others who said the Disney article wasn't that great. Definetly not The Onion's best work.

I'll concede that the other links were quite good. I even had a look around and found some excellent writing, well thought out and with great points made. The Disney one just didn't work for me personally. I can take a Disney Ribbing as well as the next woman, but this one just left me cold.

This was not one of the Onion's better pieces. As with most satire, it may be funny to some and not to others. Here, I found this okay but not up to the normal Onion standards.

I still love the fact that a chinese newspaper once copied an Onion story about Congress threathening to leave DC unless DC built Congress a better stadium. The poor chinese paper had no idea that the Onion was satire and the retraction of the story was very funny.
