"The Official 'True Blood' Vampire Thread" ...spoilers included.

I thought it was a good episode - it's so hard for me to wait a whole entire week for the next one! It was pretty gory for a wile there...I think I read that the actor portraying Eric cut his hair short for another role, but I agree that a good wig or extensions would make me happier than Eric with short hair. I honestly thought that it was supposed to be amusing that a big, strong, scary vampire like Eric would be highlighting his hair, and that he'd be afraid that Pam would be pissed about the blood ruining the process...

I read all the books last year, and I loved them, so I just have to look at the book and the series as separate entities, I guess...there are too many things going on now that aren't in the books - it doesn't stop me from enjoying the show, though!

I'm wondering if Lafayette will be used to be a protector for Sookie (she had one in the books that would stay in the woods outside her house at night), since the character in the book is not being brought into the HBO series (one thing I'm thankful for!)
That's a good idea. It would get them around all of the Elvis franchising issues. The only thing is that young vampires can't be trusted... ala Jessica attacking her father, though he had it coming. I wonder if Lafayette would have problems guarding Sookie. Couldn't you just see him preferring cat blood to human blood like Bubba?
Well, having seen Bill heal Sookie, I would imagine Lafayette's leg wound would be healed if he were turned (a step in the process even further than Sookie's healing). Vampires heal quickly (Bill's imbedded silver chains and Eric's silver cross to the face the other night), too.
If they keep to the Bubba being turned and not having his full capacities because of the drugs in his system, Lafayette could very well have a bullet scar and issues throughout his whole vampire "life".

Disclaimer: I have not read any of the books, but love the show.

A pp wondered about the language that Sookie was hearing in Maryanne's head - I thought it was Latin or some other "old" language to clue us in that she is really old. After what she did to the bar patrons at Merlotte's - with the sexy dancing, etc - My DH speculates her thing is she is like a cupid (bringing people together) - I think her motives are much more sinister than that. But I can't wait to find out.

So glad I found a place to discuss this great show.

Thanks

see I was saying that before the start of this season too...but after the first two episodes, I'm not so sure...so far this season is BORING!!! and I mean seriously it is supposed to be a show based of the books, I was ok with the changes they made last season...but this season there are no remnants of the books left...basically just characters with the same names.. I really wanted to keep liking the series, but I think I'm gonna end up hating it this season. especially if the episodes are as uniteresting and poorly written as they have been thus far...

I think the show is based on the characters from the book. If people are expecting a word for word reenactment, like Harry Potter, they are in for a big disappointment. If that's what you want, you need to get the unabridged audiobooks on CD.

First & foremost, this is a TV series. The writers & producers think of RATINGS first, last & always. They will be bound to change things to appeal to a wider audience. That's their bottom line. This show took over The Sopranos timeslot. Sunday 9pm is always a very big nite on TV for many channels.

Some things just don't translate well from the books. Sometimes, they will think of a story line they think will be better - even if it's debatable to us whether it is or not.

Remember, J.K. Rowling had more money that God when they offered her a movie deal. She had enough money, clout & fan base that she could have simply walked. She had ALL the negotiating power on her side to ensure the movies would stay true to the book.

Charlaine Harris, as with most authors, probably sold the story, characters & the rights to the ideas, but not necessarily the actual stories. Stephen King comes across this all the time when he sells one of his books to be made into movies.

The film, P.S. I Love you, with Gerard Butler, barely resembles the book. They added characters in the film, took out others, set the film in NYC instead of completely in Ireland. The main character, (Hilary Swank,) was supposed to be Irish.

In Confessions of a Shopaholic, I heard the main character is British in the book. In the movie, the actress made her American.

I wonder if the vamps will pay Jason a visit at his retreat since Lafayette spilled the beans about him being part of Eddie's death?- that will be interesting!!!:thumbsup2

So I don't have to pull in another quote (since I don't know how!), the actor who played Eric actually had very short hair last season and they wigged him. What we see now is Alex's real hair.

As far as Jason getting a visit ... I don't think so, but I *do* think the reason the church is showing so much interest in Jason is because of Sookie's vampire connections. An easy "in" for them to get to the vamps!

Maryane is thinking in aincent Greek, I believe. The speculation is that she is a Greek godess or other aincent Greek mythic character (there was a maenad in the second book).

Sorry to be OT- but I can tell you how to multi-quote.

At the bottom right of each post you will see a little
multiquote_off.gif
Just click on that and it will turn orange. That means the quote will be put into your next post. Use that for as many posts as you want to quote.

Next, just hit your
reply.gif
and all of your quotes will be put into the one post!:thumbsup2

yes I understand how these things work...I'm not stupid. it happens all the time...but I feel that to use so much actual dialogue and scenes from Book 1 in series 1 and then thus far to just completely change EVERYTHING isn't right...and how could this be for ratings??? This season is horrible thus far...Like i mentioned before, the storylines are boring and the writing is REALLY bad. they need to go back to stuff from the books and FAST.

Sorry, if I sounded snippy. We went though this last season, too. It took 3/4 of the season for people on this thread to finally settle into the show not being quite like the books. New season, this talk is starting up again.

And, I didn't say these stories were working. :upsidedow But there is pressure now, with Anna Paquin winning the Golden Globe & the show winning Best Television Series - Drama. They have to win & keep the time slot.

Quoting myself here... found this about maenads on Wikipedia- sounds like Maryanne, all right:

In Greek mythology, Maenads were the female followers of Dionysus, the most significant members of the Thiasus, the retinue of Dionysus. Their name literally translates as "raving ones". Often the maenads were portrayed as inspired by him into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and drunken intoxication. In this state, they would lose all self control, begin shouting excitedly, engage in uncontrolled sexual behavior, and ritualistically hunt down and tear animals (and sometimes men and children) to pieces, devouring the raw flesh. During these rites, the maenads would dress in fawn skins and carry a thyrsus, a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves and tipped by a cluster of leaves, weave ivy-wreaths around their heads, and often handle or wear snakes.

I'm enjoying this season so far. I don't mind the departures from the book, it keeps it new and exciting for me. The first couple of episodes do seem like set up, but thats to be expected since in show time its only been a few days since the whoe Renee thing...poor Sookie with that black eye...I hope its gone this Sunday. I prefer the Jason from the books, but show Jason is funny to me, so very gullible. I am interested to see what happens with Jessica, and of course, with Eric as well.

I really hope that Eric is more like Eric from the books. Not saying that he isn't right now but I hope that they have some of the Sookie and Eric interaction that happens later in the series (even the stuff from book 2)

no problem...but I"m not one who had issues last season...I LOVED last season from the get go...but I'm just not feeling it this time around.

But I seriously don't think they can expect to win anything this year based off the first few episodes...I'm continuing to watch and hoping that it will get better, but these first two are just not up to snuff. (especially for an Alan Ball show....)

ok, so does anyone else think that Jessica's fangs are way too big for her mouth? Everyone else seems to have smaller ones..

Oh and the way Jessica said... when she quotes bill.. "I have errands to run which do not require your presence".. or whatever.. I Laughed my head off :rotfl2:

:rotfl2: That was funny- it seemed like Jessica and Sookie shared something when she said that

I absolutely love Lafayette. If they don't turn him, I'm going to be so disappointed. He is truly hilarious!

I love the books, I'm only up to "all together dead" but I have no problem with the show being different. I love the surprise of it. I get my cheesy smile on when I hear "bad things" at the opening and it runs all the way through to the preview for the next week.

The chemistry between Sookie and Bill is SMOKIN'! Maybe it helps that they are a couple in real life and it just feeds the fires.

You guys want to talk about series diverging from the books they were based on? I'm a big fan of Terry Goodkind's Sword Of Truth series. This past season, they syndicated a show based on the books called The Legend of the Seeker. Talk about a series straying from the original books! I had a harder time figuring out where they converged than where they differed.

They are a real couple? That makes sense, esp the last scene from the show two weeks ago in the bedroom, that was so hot!:goodvibes

AAAAAACK! I cannot take the extreme gore in this show! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Episodes need to have an "EG" rating for Extreme Gore before episodes. :p

:rotfl2: Pam's heels! :lmao:
