The Official Polynesian Resort FAQ thread!

I just had to post this here cuz I'm so excited! We just returned from our 8 day stay at POFQ yesterday. We went to the Poly for the Spirit of Aloha show and fell in love with the place! We always thought that resort was out of our reach financially. Well, I checked into all of that today and it actually only costs a tiny bit more for one room at the Poly to fit all five of us than it did at POFQ to get two connecting rooms! So I just booked a GV for the week of Nov 17th 2007. (I can't help it, call me crazy, I know its a year away but I'm so excited.) now I just have to read through this whole thread to answer all my million questions!!!!

We now go two or three times a year to WDW, but in 2003, we had not been in YEARS...so were very excited to be going on our "first" trip again with grandkids.
Originally, we had reservations at Port Orleans French Quarter, but lucked out when they began renovations and had a chance to upgrade to the Polynesian by paying a little extra.
I had made the usual requests for volcano view, etc. but we were put in a building facing the construction in the parking lot. When I began to ask about possibly moving after the busy Mother's Day weekend, the lady at the desk became visibly upset and began to tell me that I had not paid rack rates due to my upgrade and that I should be happy where I was. I told her that when I upgraded I felt I was entitled to the same service and had I wanted discount service, I could have gone to the value resorts. She told me that nothing else was available.
After I asked to see the manager and explained to him that we were staying 9 nights and did not want to view the parking lot the entire trip, he disappeared for a few minutes and came back with a room on the third floor in Samoa facing the volcano pool.
I appreciated his intervention, but resented the lady at the desk making me feel cheap, when in fact, I know that many many guests stay on discounted rooms.
Now I own at 3 DVC resorts and only visit the Poly to eat on occasion.

I have to say a few CMs here leave MUCH to be desired. We checked in yesterday (requested lagoon view-paid extra dvc pts for it-got a view of a tree-lagoon is somewhere behind it) but anyways, there were two large trays of food on the floor next to our door when we got here. came back at 5 and the food was still there and smelling very bad. i asked the CM doing the room across the hall if someone could please remove it since it had been there so long and she said - i quote "WELCOME TO MY WORLD". i said HUH? and she went back to her work. I stopped at guest relations on the way out to dinner and told them what happened. the CM there said it would be taken care of immediately. it was gone by 10 when we got back.
I don't care about the bad view and no balcony, i am here and having fun. weather is great. DH loves the new TVs in these rooms. I was upset about the view and he said yeh but the tv is great, lol. ;)

Wow I'm really surprised at the CM, I guess we all have bad days. I know DH will love the tv's too!

Quick question which longhouses are considered Lagoon view? Thanks for your help.

Lagoon view rooms can be found in Tahiti, Tuvalu, Aotearoa and two rooms in Tokelau are designated Lagoon view.

Magic Kingdom View rooms can be found in Tahiti, Tuvalu and Aotearoa.

Hawaii only has concierge lagoon view rooms and Garden view concierge rooms. All the rest have garden view rooms only.

I understand your pain VLee but it is 2006 and time to let it go .... breathe deep .... sorry you have that bad memory of the Poly ...

I did not mean to imply that this is something I can't let go. It was just a statement of what happened to me during my stay.

Hey...I now am a MEMBER OF DVC..WHICH HAS WAY MORE PERKS THAN A RESORT GUEST WOULD EVER HAVE...

I get to enjoy the villas and one-bedrooms at Wilderness, Beach Club, Boardwalk, and the others for the next 40 years. The number of points that I have will let me stay about six weeks at a time if I wanted.

Thanks Tikiman, I have your website on the Poly on my favorites list.

Hey just wanted to let anyone know. We had to book a last minute room for our November trip b/c a night had not opened up at the Swan and I called for a one night stay at the Poly and gave the code from Mousesavers and it was available but I saved another $8 by going with a PIN code that came up with my name. In any event, just thought I would pass it along in case any last minuters were looking to save a few dollars.

Thanks to the board and Tikiman as I requested either Fiji or Samoa.
Long time wannabes and First timers at the Poly!

I was just reading through the updates on Tikiman's site for this year, and saw that they're going to have tonga toast on the menu when Captain Cooks reopens! That makes me so happy!

If there's a Tikiman fan club, I wanna be president! ;)

Well as President can you get the word out about TIKIFEST 2007? Comming soon to a themepark near you!!!

We are so excited about returning to The Polynesian :Pinkbounc
:bounce: I have read the information on computer connections however I am not sure what the Poly has. Do they have wi-fi? Is it available in the Hawaii building?

They are already serving Tonga Toast at Captain Cooks. It looks very tasty but I can't stand warm bananas so I will never eat it!

Angel,
There is no wi-fi that I know of. Each room has a wired connection. I brought my own wireless router and it worked great. I was able to sit on the balcony and use my laptop.

Congratulations on your dream coming true. It is so nice to have a big trip to look forward to next year. (Now just keep looking for the discounts)

After our trip in Nov/Dec I don't have anything scheduled, but I am sure as soon as I get home I will be booking something.

Lyn

We booked thru AAA, and we did so before I had the full scoop from ya'll.

I spoke to our agent this week and he confirmed that he requested nonsmoking, patio or balcony. He then said that was the limit for him to enter requests. Ok, cool. He's been great so far and I don't want to give him a hard time...

So I tried to call myself and I can't.

If I would like to request a certain building or two at this point, what are my options? It seems the faxing is not a great idea-- or is it? Should we just relax and handle it upon arrival? We arrive at MCO at 10:20 am and then take ME-- so, its not early, but its not late. I was hoping for Samoa or Fiji (cove side)...

Should we just relax and let my DH (who is universally beloved by service persons everywhere, its truly sickening) handle it casually by simply asking if we can get a room in Samoa / Fiji?

Yeah, I;m a freak.

Its 19 days to go people. There are no more ADR changes, and I can't pack yet because our house is on the market and I have nowhere to stash the partially packed bags. I gotta obsess over SOMETHING!

And, finally-- can I buy hair mousse there in their little store? I gotta have it, don't wanna ship it, and am afraid it will be ruined in my checked bags...

Has anyone out there tried Captain Cook's tonga toast? Is it as good as Kona's?
WE got Tonga toast for breakfast from Captain cook's but never had it from Kone before. It was delicious though :thumbsup2 . I would think it would be the same as the one at Kona Cafe. It didn't come with any sides though ,you have to order them seperately if your on the DDP.

Angel, how did I miss that you were staying at the Poly?

Thank you all for all of your helpful information.
Here's a question about the room. I see a lot about the fridge and from research I see that there are no microwaves. But, the Polynesian, being a higher class place that you would expect to be eating out a lot, I understand. But what about re-heating left-overs.

I hear how big the portions are with the dining plan and we hate to waste food.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your reply! I was actually hoping to be able to use a DDP counter service instead of table service for breakfast. So that should work. We don't really need sides. :sunny:

I don't know??? :) Maybe reading too quickly? We are staying at the Poly for the first week of our vacation. The part where the whole family is joining us as a suprise for my DH. This is when we have Victoria and Alberts Chef Table booked, going to MVMCP, Sleigh ride, dinner at Artist Point and so much more. The second week we are staying at AKL, our family will be heading home the same day we change over to AKL :grouphug: I am so excited. :yay: :bounce: :Pinkbounc  :cheer2:
Can you tell?

Angel
