The Official Non-Red Sox/Yankee Baseball Fan Thread

I know; it's awful. They were saying today that Pujols and Miles were with him at the hospital last night till like 3 am or so, but there's been no other news on his condition. Eye injuries are so tricky, and his could turn out not to be so bad once all of the swelling goes down and things start healing....I don't know if baseball has sight requirements like the NHL does. Poor guy.

And on a brighter note, the Cards completed their sweep of the Reds today! Ankiel had another HR. I'm so happy for him. :teeth:

Let's hope for the best. You're right, once the swelling goes down, it might not be as bad as originally thought.

The Mets go to Cincinnati next--I hope they have the same success that the Cards had.

OK, I just read the latest on Encarnacion's injury, and one of the things that struck me the most was that when Miles called him to see how he was, the 1st thing Juan asked him was whether or not Miles had gotten a hit after hitting the foul ball that struck Encarnacion in the face. Miles said no, that he'd struck out, and said JE "got kind of mad at that." :)

Anyway, according to a team official, Encarnacion's orbital bone basically "exploded," and that the problem is that there could've been damage to his optic nerve. They can't tell anything till the swelling goes down, which could take a week. I can't even imagine sitting there for a week, not knowing if you're ever going to be able to see out of your eye again!

I watched that replay several times. The poor man went down like he had been shot. It certainly must have felt like that.

On a good note we were at the game yesterday. Good game, a little boring till we started scoring. But hey, we won!!!:thumbsup2

Horrible ugly injury for the Cards last night (as though they need more of those)--Aaron Miles hit a line drive foul that smacked Juan Encarnacion right in the left eye as he was standing in the on-deck circle. It was sickening to see, and apparently his career may be in doubt now. I figured it was at least a broken orbital bone when they said they'd taken him to the hospital (having seen that injury in hockey several times), but they reported today that he suffered several fractures of that whole area AND a severe eye injury to boot. :sad2: He's out--at minimum--for the remainder of the season; I can't even imagine how awful Miles feels about things, though it was obviously an accident.

Wow, what a shame. Reminds me of the bean-ball that ended Kirby Puckett's career after it hit him in the eye. Hopefully this work out better for Encarnacion.

LOL no kidding, all I can say is BRING ON THE RAVENS! At least they are always competitive.

I'm feeling the same way about the Vikings these days... and they're not always competitive. But it's so frustrating watch the Twins struggle to be mediocre with a team that has so much talent.:sad2:

Grrrr...just when we think the Cards might've turned the corner and become a competent team again, they show up and turn in a barfer like this one today. 11-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th; the broadcasters are so bored they're discussing movies and dating. :rolleyes2

Miguel Cairo's at bat now and they just had a shot of a couple of guys wearing rally caps in the stands; Al Hrabosky said, "I think I'll wait and see what Cairo does before I break out the rally cap." Dan McLaughlin replied, "Are you saying you don't have faith, Al? 'Cause that's what it sounds like to me." Al said, "I thought I was pretty clear on that." :sad1:

Welcome back, Pedro!! Rocky first inning, but he got better as time went on...he hit 90 on the radar gun in his last inning. David Wright hit a homer, and Alou had a wonderful game....Mets win 10-4. Then the Braves help them out & beat the Phillies.

I thought it was glaucoma, not a bean ball that limited the sight in Kirby Puckett's eye.

It was glaucoma, but I was always under the impression that the bean ball was the cause. I know there was a lot of talk about that at the time, as well as during the coverage after his death. Wikipedia indicates that "there is no conclusive evidence for this", so who knows. All I know is that he never played in the majors again - a brilliant career ended way too soon (I don't blame the guy that hit him, it was just a sad accident).

I know they mentioned that as one of the long-term possible effects of this type of injury on Encarnacion--glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment--all of them are possibilities after blunt trauma to the eye, but no one knows what's going to happen for sure because eye injuries are so hard to judge. There was a little improvement in Juan's case today, apparently, thank goodness.

Mets won last night, Phillies won too. But the Mets lost today, and the Phillies are winning. It does feel weird to root for the Braves!

The Braves just won in the bottom of the ninth! I never thought that could make me happy! :thumbsup2

Well, our boy Rick went 3 for 4 today with 2 more HRs and 7 RBIs...good Lord. It's almost starting to be unbelievable, you know? But more importantly, the Cards won and the Cubs lost.

....the only thing I hope is that it was for all of the myriad injuries he suffered during that season. I just wonder about WHY the NY Daily News chose to run this story--in the middle of the night--on a day in 2007, 3 seasons after this allegedly took place, and 2 seasons after taking HGH became banned by MLB. If the story is true as written (and I'm reserving judgement till we hear from Ankiel himself), he was taking it under doctor's orders. He did nothing wrong, and yet he's still going to be crucified by the media and the rest of MLB, most likely.

It does bear pointing out, though, that he's always had power-- according to research done by StL columnist Bernie Miklasz back in 2001 when the idea was already being floated locally that Ankiel should give thought to becoming an outfielder because of his strong hitting, he hit a 450-foot HR in high school. After he graduated, he played on the US Jr. National team and was an outfielder on his pitching off-days; he had something like a .387 BA w/ 2 HRs and 16 RBIs. That same year, he hit a HR into the upper deck of what was then the Sky Dome in Toronto, and he was 17 years old.

D*mn it, though, this still kills me. I wish like hell there was a reliable test for HGH, but there isn't. I wish it'd be as easy as RA just saying, "OK, fine, test me so we can put this behind us and continue trying to resurrect this horror of a season." I guess it'll all come down to taking his word for it, which is fine by me, but I know it won't be for the rest of the world.

Oh, and I should point out that his body hasn't bulked up from how it was just after he was in HS; I have a pic taken of me with him at a card show in 1998 and the only difference is that he's lost his baby face and is leaner than he was then. I should also note that I'm still a little bit bitter that when I met him on that winter day in 1998, he addressed me as "ma'am." I felt like I was 50. ;)

Oh, and none of this is directed at you, Missy....I'm just kind of venting and rambling because it's all a little shocking and I'm exhausted and haven't had any caffeine yet, all of which is an ugly combination. :)

No worries, I understand. I have been rooting for him to succeed. He seems like a great guy.

Mets had a really good weekend. Hopefully, they can have a really good week, too: Atlanta comes to Shea for 3, then the Phillies come to town.

It was nice to see the Tribe go into Anaheim and take 2 games against a team they are likely to see in the playoffs as things stand now. Even on a 13 game west coast swing, they are coming together hopefully at the right time.

After watching the Browns yesterday......the tribe is our only hope right now.....
