The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Expelled seems an exaggeration. Suspended, sure. The girl who made the rude remark would probably get in trouble, too.

I support Smith for defending his wife, but I also support schools for enforcing rules. Smith is lucky he wasn't arrested or beaten up himself. That's what often happens when you hit another person in the grown-up world, which is why schools teach children not to do it, and reinforce that teaching with consequences. In real life, a person doing this at a work-related event would probably also get fired. Will Smith can't exactly get fired, but most people won't grow up to be so wealthy and powerful.

Life isn't fair, no one ever said it was.
I disagree. Hitting someone and cursing them on live television is not an appropriate response. I don't care who you are. There's no excuse. JMO

I don't think Jada should have had to sit there undefended as Chris Rock made fun of her medical condition. Maybe in the future Chris Rock will be more careful about pointedly insulting a specific member of the audience. That isn't appropriate.

My child attends a crunchy granola school. Violence is grounds for informing us that maybe your child is not a good fit and you should look into other options - nice way of saying your child has been expelled.

A classy and productive move would've been for Will Smith to take the microphone from Chris Rock and educate people on Jada's condition.
Why should the audience have to be lectured? They weren't the ones who insulted her.

I think a better response would have been him just slapping Rock, then staying silent instead of yelling and cursing, but no one's perfect.

Full disclosure, I've suffered for years from what Jada has, so I have zero tolerance for seeing a woman being singled out and made fun of for that painful condition. Jada didn't deserve that and was obviously hurt. I'm glad that Smith defended her.

There is and has been way too much criticism of women's looks, as if they're objects to be evaluated and judged. Don't feel at all bad about one of those casual, public criticizers taking a pop to the mouth. Sorry not sorry.

Jada has a big mouth and she knows how to use it. She is not shy. She didn't need "protecting" in this situation and the assumption that she did and Will came to her rescue is a whole load of toxic patriarchal, machismo BS.

I told my husband he better never "protect" me like that. Its asinine and inexcusable.

They both royally screwed up.

But we've all got way way bigger fish to fry and ultimately nobody really cares what happens to them (other than we all love to see giants fall).

Can we get back to talking about Regina Hall's agonizing groping and objectifying of the men?

Men have protected women for millenia. There's nothing wrong with it.

Just because something has been done for a long time doesn't make it a requirement. Times have changed. I'm assuming you don't know much about the Smith's marriage, but suffice it to say, NOTHING about their relationship is traditional.
I was just thinking that! The world is changing thank goodness and resorting to violence is pathetic.

The joke had already been played at rehearsal and there was no reaction from the Smiths. Will Smith laughed at the joke, Jada rolled her eyes and then the camera cut away - so whatever made him snap happened then because the camera then showed the storming of the stage.

Jada has already compared herself to GI Jane some time ago on social media - so cannot now play the offended card. Will Smith didn't slap any of the female hosts when they brought up the "open marriage" earlier in the night?

This is not a case of a damsel in distress.
All 3 involved are adults who have been in the entertainment industry for many, many years.
If one or more of them has a problem with something that is said, it should be addressed at an appropriate time and place.
Sauntering up to assault someone while they are performing at a live event is completely inappropriate.

Public humiliation earned some public pushback. Oh well. He deserved it.

I pretty sure Chris Rock doesn't write all of his own material. And as PP said...it was rehearsed with no pushback (or slap). I am still shocked Will Smith behaved in that manner. My first thought was he was drunk or high on something.
