The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I have a funny take on the Magic Bands for this trip. Since it is just DH and I and we have been to the World several times, we doing the "spontaneous" plan. Since FP+ limits you to three choices per day, it is helping "guide" us through the parks. Without these three things "booked", we would just wander aimlessly and probably not do much because the standby lines could be longer than we are willing to wait.

Here's how I "planned" our itinerary (*sorry, it's a little long)...

Thursday: Flight lands at 5:30, DME to AKV by 7pm. No set dinner plans yet. We'll either eat at the Mara or order room service if we want something "fancy". Since I won't be able to get our TIW card until the next morning, I don't want to eat at a TS restaurant.

Friday: Hit AK first thing (EMH at 8am) and get our TIW card. The only things we really want to do here are Kilimanjaro Safaris (it's a different experience every time:goodvibes) and maybe Everest. We may walk the two trails too, if we have time. After that (hopefully by 10am), we'll catch a cab to the Expo, get our bibs and new corral assignments, and do a little shopping. Then it's lunch at the ESPN grill (counter service that accepts TIW:cheer2:) and back to the resort, hopefully by 1pm. For the evening, I plan to get to DHS around 4pm. Here's where the FP+ comes in handy. I have a FP+ for RnRC at 4:40. We'll do that as soon as we can. Then, it's ToT on standby, followed by Fantasmic at 6:30. We have a FP+ for Fantasmic so we don't have to wait in line super early. I plan to sit near the back so we can make a quick exit. Then it's over to TSMM where we have a FP+ for 7-8pm. After the ride, we head over to 50's PTC for dinner at 7:45. The park closes at 8 so we should have a nice, leisurely bus ride back to the resort after dinner.

Saturday: RACE DAY!!:scared::scared::scared: I want to get up early and hit the MK in the morning. It's not really a trip to WDW without going to the MK, but there is not a lot we NEED to do. I want to check out the new Fantasyland so I made 3 FP+ reservations for us. First, we'll hit Buzz Lightyear (one of these days, I will beat DH:rotfl2:) with a FP+ of 9:05. Then, off to Fantasyland for Under the Sea with Ariel at 10:05. Finally, we'll hit BTMRR at 11:05. Perhaps, if the standby line isn't too long, we will try for the Haunted Mansion on our way over to Frontierland. If it's not too late, on the way out, we will try for PoTC. I'd like to be back at the hotel by 1pm so that we can get a decent nap in before the race. I plan on eating dinner by 5pm (tuna and pasta salad in the room) and getting to Epcot by 6pm. Then, we'll catch the shuttle to the WWoS...and then we wait:hourglass.

Sunday: SLEEP IN:faint:. I have a "lunch" (but it will be our first meal of the day) at Sanaa at 1:30. After lunch, we'll head back to Epcot. We have FP for Soarin at 3, Test Track at 4:40 and Mission Space at 5:45. After that, it's more time at the F&W booths (and Grey Goose slushies!) and Illuminations to close out the night.

Monday: Nothing planned so far for the morning. Maybe some pool time or back to the AK for any of the shows that we missed. To close out the trip, I booked dinner at 7:30pm at Artist Point. We honeymooned at the WL 11 years ago:lovestruc so that has a special meaning for us. Afterwards, we'll take the boat to the CR and head over to the Top of the World Lounge to watch the Holiday Wishes from the roof at 9:30pm. DH has never been to the TOTWL so I am excited to share it with him. We'll walk back to the MK bus stop and catch the bus back to AKV. Then I'll have to get us packed up because we leave the next day:sad1:.

Tuesday: Our flight leaves at 2:30 so I am planning on an 11:30 DME pickup. I booked our traditional departure-day breakfast at Boma for 10:15am. We'll check our bags with RAC and leave our carry-ons with bell services before breakfast. I plan to linger at breakfast until about 11:00 and then we'll head out to the bus stop to start the sad trip home.

The point about the FP+ is that without it, I would literally have no "guidance" to follow. This way, I can formulate a bit of an itinerary but still maintain the flexibility to change it up as we want.

DH and I honeymooned at the WL 11 years ago too! Last year we booked Artist point for a meal during race weekend, this year we are going back to Jiko. We spent an evening there at the bar having south african wine and apps back on our honeymoon in 2002 and love the atmosphere. :lovestruc

Our plan is similar with a few exceptions. We're going to Epcot on thursday night, DHS on friday, probably followed by jelly rolls or ESPN, expo saturday after a nice mornings of sleeping in and late brunch, Epcot on sunday to eat everything in sight :lmao:, MK on monday morning for breakfast and a couple rides, and tea in the afternoon at the Grand before leaving for the airport. We don't have any set plans for rides yet but maybe if we get some FP+ we will use that. We usually like to ride the "big rides" when DS is not with us, so FP+ would be helpful to get to ride Test Track, Soarin, Rock n Roller Coaster, TSM, and Space Mountain. Wonder if I'll be able to hook up our rundisney tickets (if they ever arrive!)

Wow, that video is REALLY motivating. I seriously had tears running down my face. I think this is going to be very emotional once it actually happens. :goodvibes Then again I'm that person who gets teary eyed at the MK opening show, sailaway parties on the cruise, etc...

Thanks for the info too. It is good to know that is normal. I guess I will go with the shortest distance so the actual run will seem shorter than 13.1. ;)

And yes, I am another one who plans to eat and drink like a pig on Sun. :faint: We are also doing Epcot on Fri but I know I will be a bit more reserved and try to not eat and drink so much with the race hanging over my head.

Speaking of Sunday do you all plan to wear your medals to the parks? DH and I were discussing this and he thinks no one does but it seems I have heard people do.

You better believe I'm wearing my medal on Sunday. You're lucky I'm not wearing it every day for the next 6 months!

Seriously though, when ELSE are you going to wear it? Disney is the place!

I'll be wearing mine! Last year I wore mine all day in Epcot and took pictures in each country. I rarely like taking pictures at all, but I was so gosh darn proud that I actually ran a half marathon that I made DH take tons! We may or may not have taken a few shots over and over until they came out looking nice enough. :lmao: All the cast members in the world showcase stores and wine counters noticed it and said congratulations too....

THANK YOU for posting that video! Like many others have said - it was SO motivating! I can't get over how supportive her husband was and how well that video was put together. Very emotional.

Ooh! I just noticed that my ticker changed from 4 weeks to 3 weeks, 6 days today! yay!:cool1:

I tried to get my sister to wear hers from 2011 with me to our fancy Christmas Eve dinner last year. She refused however, she did bring it home with her when she visted and we did take pics with them. If you knew us, no one would ever have said either of us would run distance races. Ever. :)

I made the mistake of heading home on Sunday last year so I will NOT be repeating that this year! I have absolutely nothing planned other than a Run WDW meetup at the boat dock at the Boardwalk at 11am on Saturday (all are welcome by the way! :thumbsup2). And you can bet your Disney dupas that THIS dupa will be sporting her medal all over the place Sunday and Monday! :cool1: :cheer2: :rotfl2: Anyone up for group pics, let me know! :grouphug:

And glad to see I'm not the only sappy one who cries over anything Disney-related! :goodvibes

Happily finished my longest planned long-run today!

(I'm not excited about it at all, can 'ya tell??????)

13.1 miles are in the books.
1:55:09
Overall Pace: 8:47 min/mile.

I kept it PRETTY clean and even at mostly 8:50 range. One real quick mile at the take-off (7:53) I hate that I always start so quick. Around mile 6 was my slowest with a 9:25.

I wouldn't say that I pushed all that hard for any of my miles. They were all pretty easy and I never felt like I was at an all-out race pace. Even for that first mile, it didn't feel like I was pushing too hard. Sure, by mile 10, I was ready to be DONE, but I felt decent.

My right foot does feel wonky at my arches. I don't know what that is all about. I've been switching between two pairs of Brooks - Adrenalines that I've been running in for about 150 miles or so, and Ghosts that have about 75 miles on them. I like both, and can't decide which to wear for the big-day. I was leaning towards the Ghosts, but those were what I wore today and my arch hurts on my right foot.

Anyway, good luck, everyone, on your long runs this weekend. I'm sure that I'm not the only one going the full 13.1! Stay injury free/illness free...and most of all, enjoy yourselves!

PS --- we're staying off property for our trip. Can I say how EXTREMELY jealous I am of all of you who are getting your magical bands! Those things look really cool!

Wow you are zippy!!! Great job on your long run being done!

The ghosts hurt my arches too- they are just to squishy for me.

My plans for the race weekend. Again it is a solo trip so I am going to be going with the flow a lot this trip.
I did 10 days with the family last Thanksgiving and a half day at the MK before our cruise in March and a 1/2 in Epcot after our Cruise. So I get to do the things I want to do without kids.

Fly in Friday morning 11/8
Check in at resort - get a few things if necessary from the grocery store. Go to MK. I have tickets for MVMCP and an annual pass so I'll get there whenever I feel like it. I plan to do a lot of the things the kids might not have been as interested in last year. I do want to ride Splash Mountain. I didn't manage it with ride swaps last year and it was closed in March.
I missed a few shows at the party last year so those are the things I want to do this year. I plan to take it pretty easy.

Saturday morning 11/9 sleep in and then go to the EXPO. (Sleeping in to me is like 7:30am typically so it won't be that late of a morning). Enjoy the Expo. Go get a late lunch/early dinner at Epcot. I'd like to ride Test Track. It wasn't open last Thanksgiving and the line was too long by hte time we made it there in March to ride. I'd like to see the new reimagined Test Track. Take the bus from Epcot to the WWOS for the race start. I plan to take it pretty easy. I doubt I can sleep but if I can I might take a nap between the EXPO and Epcot for lunch/dinner. I don't know where I am planning to eat though. I haven't made reservations. Maybe I should. Any suggestions. It doesn't even have to be at Epcot. I have an Annual Pass and a Car so I can pretty much go anywhere today as long as I get to Epcot to park and take the bus to WWOS. After the race I will hang out as long as I am able before driving back to my resort. (I am staying just offsite on 192 about 10 minutes from Epcot).

Sunday - sleep in until I wake up. Again I have no real plans. I might go to DHS tonight to enjoy the Osborne Lights and maybe even see Fantasmic. I don't think I have seen Fantasmic since 2000. I don't have any need to do the headliners although I might try a single rider line at RRC if the line isn't so long. I might do something else in the morning and then hop over here for Fantasmic and the lights at night too. I just don't know.

Monday I have a super super early flight out (6:40am departure) and then when I get back to Houston I am going straight to the office. It will be a long day!

Wow so that is pretty detailed to say I have no firm plans of any kind. LOL. I'm all on my lonesome this trip so if anyone wants to meet up somewhere let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Nice job!:woohoo:

Yup, I won't be seeing you on the course either. I am flying if I'm doing an 11-minute mile:lmao:.

My DH realized yesterday the reason why I refuse to go 13.1 before the race. He did a 13.1 mile run earlier this year (while training for this race) before his bike accident. He looked at his training log yesterday and realized he did it at a 9:00 pace. Now, he's running his long runs around 10-10:30 minutes and he is disappointed in himself. He sees what pace he was capable of and he is now very discouraged because he is slower now. I don't want to do 13.1 now and then have "something to shoot for" at the race. I do not plan on running the race the same way I do my training runs.

I'm trying NOT to look at my 10K from earlier this year. Somehow, I managed to complete it in 1:10! I have NO idea how I did that:confused3. I'm just glad that I can use it to get into a better corral. *IF* I do the entire 13.1 the same way that I do my training runs, I could complete it at a 12:30 pace (I hope), but since I plan on taking my time through the parks and stopping for pictures, I will be happy with a 14:00 pace overall:yay:.

I know this video isn't exactly event appropriate, but it's one of my favorites. Have some motivation on me! :grouphug:

Thanks so much for posting! Dh and I watched it together...I'm trying to convince him that we should do this together! (He's not biting so far;) )

So I've ran into my first snag in my training plan. The area directly behind my left knee started nagging me with a bit of pain last Saturday. It really hasn't been bad, just mild soreness which I hoped would go away, but it hasn't. It was mildly there for my two 30 min. runs this week and became pretty obvious in my circuit training class today.

I asked my trainer at the gym her opinion and here is her advice: give up my last 2 long runs. She believes that I have inflammation there and that the long runs are going to aggravate it. She suggested rest, ice, ibruprofen, and alternate workouts for cardio(spin & elliptical). I think this is sound advice, but I'm a bit bummed about giving up my 12.5 and 14 mile runs leading up to our race day. (I hoped that it would mentally prepare me most of all, since I would know that I already ran a longer distance.) I considered just giving up this week's long run and wait and see how I feel 2 weeks from now when I'm scheduled for my final long run. Any thoughts?

BTW, I read online a little bit about KT tape. Any experience? Did it help? I also saw that they offer KT taping at the expo. Are the lines usually long for this at the expo? Would this best be done on Saturday afternoon?

I also have a 10k run tomorrow for a qualifying corral time. Supposed to be rainy/cold tomorrow, so I'm hoping it won't negatively affect my time.

Keep up the good work everybody! I can't wait to read everyone's long run reports this weekend.

:)

One other ? about the expo:
When is the best time to go to avoid the heaviest crowds? I was thinking about going first thing on Friday morning, but are the opening times pretty popular?

Yucky run today :(. I had 12.5 miles to do according to the Galloway plan. The weather was great but I just wasn't into it. My legs seemed tired but I think it was more my mental state. Just a crappy crappy week AND two of my chEAR squad had to cancel and can't come to see me run :(. I managed only 5.5 miles before calling it quits. I'll be getting in a lot of walking around NYC this weekend but I don't think it will make up for missing my 12.5 today.
Thanks for letting me whine!

Don't give up everything all at once. Take it day by day, week by week. Your body might not be ready for a long run in 2 weeks but it might. It might be ready next week. I guess what I'm saying is ice it, rest it, and be cautious but also dont throw out your entire plan just yet. Usually i I have a pain that seems like it might be an injury or almost developing into one, i make sure to take at least one or two full days off from all exercise and I never make decisions about a planned run until that day. Because sometimes what you might be convinced will sideline you, even if it is a repeat thing, might surprise you.

Good luck tomorrow and also remember that race day adrenaline will help you finish the remaining miles if you don't go up to or past 13.1 in training. Seriously- it will. It won't be easy, (you're still running 13 miles!) but u don't absolutely need to do 13 in training to finish it in the race.

I love my KT tape I've used the full knee support method as well as the one for shin splints. In my opinion it works wonders. Just watch the videos online or look at the PDF instructions before taping. You can also post a picture to their Facebook page to make sure you've taped correctly and someone will give you feedback!
