The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Tried to do run earlier in the day. Discovered the 10k had apparently taken more out of me than I realized. I'm still sore from it during my run intervals in my shins. And I quickly realized that I still needed a bit more recovery time. So rather than push myself I decided to pull up. Didn't even get a half mile done. But I figure better pull up than risk an injury or over exhaustion.

Supposed to meet the new training group on Saturday. Though the meet up isn't for a run, it's for a cardio class (the group does more than just train for runs, they have tri training among other things). Hoping to get an idea there about setting up a better structure for the rest of the lead up to the Wine and Dine instead of just winging it like I've been doing it so far.

Some are working, some aren't.

Disney Sports told me they couldn't be linked. They said I could scan them as soon as I arrive on site and they will work then. Being a non-IT person, I'm skeptical that the app will know I have magically arrived at Disney and they should work now, but who am I to argue?. Lol.

I'm not quite convinced it ITBS but since I can't figure what it could be, I'm treating it like that for now. I'm icing & foam rolling every night. Started ITBS specific stretching last night & will do every night. I'm taking 2 weeks off. And will KT tape my knee when I run again. I did the outer knee method last time. Should I try the full knee support?

I have a rx ibuprofen and an rx inflammation prescription...which should I use?

And please! I'll take any tips! I have to run the 10 miler on the 27th at my fastest so I can get a good WDW full corral!

I would go see your friend at Florida Health (i.e. you doc) and let him look and give you a script for some quality PT time. Honestly, the best you will get here is a bunch of opinions based on your description and how we, your readers, interpret what you were trying to say. Get some hands on help.

In the mean time, I would go short this weekend - if possible. I would also go see the magic hands at ME; Desmond seriously understands how to stretch out the outer quad area.

Both scripts are for the same purpose anti-inflammatory.

Got a letter in the mail last night to test out magic bands. WOO HOO! :cool1: Considering I am doing three Disney trips in 4 months this will be fun! Can't wait to order them today and see what the hype is all about! :thumbsup2

Running 1/2 marathon in the Hartford marathon/1/2 marathon in Hartford CT on Saturday. They said on the news today it is the biggest one in New England since Boston. Little intimidating. There is supposed to be 18,000 people there. :scared: Oh well it will get me used to Disney races. :lmao:

As per chiro's orders, I ran this AM. Felt fine. There's a tweak in my hip/glut but it never got worse and it never really hurt. I've done my stretching and I see him in again in 2 hrs. We'll see how I feel for the rest of the day.

All may not be lost.

Hey, I know a NEW cast member who works really close to there.

Wouldn't happen to be a certain running coach, would it??:goodvibes

I can only tell you what's worked for me: I started with the outer leg taping and then read about another Disney runner who was suffering the same symptoms. She posted a pic of her running a 10k with her knees taped up for full support. I tried that way and found it worked SO much better! (small piece under the kneecap, two full size pieces running from the lower quads then crossed under the knee.) I use a medical adhesive spray to keep it sticking better as well. If I'm running after work, I tape up after I get out of the shower in the morning. For weekend runs, I put it on the night before. Applying it within a few hours of running, just doesn't cut it for me. I also use an rx called meloxicam (think the brand is Mobic?). I HATE taking rx's for anything, but it's the only thing that seems to be allowing me to get my miles in. :confused3

Good morning, everyone!

After experiencing similar issues a couple of years ago, I saw a tip in Runners' World that has really helped. You need a step platform, or can use the bottom stair of a staircase. Stand parallel to the stair and step up, placing the leg closest to the step in the middle of the step. Tap the side of the step with your other foot, then step down. Do 10+ repeats on each side. This loosens up the I.T. band and helps to stretch it out before you run. I have a step platform and use 3 risers, so it gives a good stretch. I also do some traditional forward facing step moves to help warm up as well. I haven't had I.T. band issues since. Not sure how I'm going to mimic this before the race, but if you see a goofy silver haired woman bouncing up and down on the closest curb, that would be me :lmao:

Hope it feels better soon! Good luck with the 10K!! :cheer2:

Hey, I know a NEW cast member who works really close to there.

I didn't even catch that. I hope congrats are in order. Is this top secret, or can you disclose any info? I wouldn't want you to jeopardize anything.

Do me one favor, though. When I retire, my dream job is to drive the boats from Hollywood Studios to the Boardwalk, Beach & Yacht Club, Swan & Dolphin. So would you mind putting in a good word for me. No rush, I've got 13 years before I can retire.

Sorry to mislead, it's the DH who is a CM. She is at the Marketplace in BC. I was attempting to grab a Part Time CM gig, but the availability requirements required a full three days off to meet.

Our MagicBands arrived yesterday:cool1:! Mine is hot pink (of course!) and DH selected the bright green. They are so nice and I can't wait to try them out. It's so funny because I've had all my reservations linked, dining booked and FP+'s chosen about two weeks ago. Today, we got the invitation to set them up and test them:rotfl2:. Disney is a little backwards:upsidedow, but at least we get to try them.

Today was my day for a "long" run but I just didn't feel like trying another 10-12 miles. I decided to run a certain route that I've done before, but I added a little distance by going a different way through the subdivision. I did't know how far it would end up being, but I knew it was under 10 and over 6 which is the target I was aiming for.

I started out with the thoughts of "keep it slow!" in my mind. I knew that my last run (which was a short one, as planned) started out way too fast. Fortunately, because it was only 3.5 miles, I was able to maintain the pace. I knew that an 11:30 pace was not a good way to start a long run since I'd never maintain it and probably hurt myself in the process. So, I was thinking slow...but I overdid it! I did the first mile in 13:09:sad2:. Ooops!! Now I totally felt behind the eight ball since I wanted to finish at or below a 12:30 pace. I kicked it in gear a little more on the next two miles and did them in 12:23 and 11:55 respectively. Then my interval timer went off:scared:...WTH??? Oh, stupid me! I had set it to only 4 intervals since I went 3.5 miles the last time and I forgot to reset it. It took me a little bit to get everything back on track which resulted in mile 4 being 13:09 again. As "punishment", when I got the interval timer reset, I set it for run 9/walk 3 instead of the 8/4 I usually do. It wasn't too bad the rest of the way. I did miles 5-8 in anywhere between 11:58 and 12:34 so that's pretty consistent. When I got home, I'd gone 8.58 miles at a 12:27 pace:cheer2:.

Tonight, my friend and I are going to the gym for a yoga class. Then, I think I may join the kids in the pool and maybe the hot tub for a nice, relaxing way to stretch out and enjoy the evening. My next run will be Saturday. My DD10 and I are doing a 5K fundraiser run. My friend's sister lost her baby to stillbirth and has decided to raise money for research, education and support for those effected by it. Her FB page is Addyson's Angel Run and it tells her whole story, if anyone is interested.

I might squeak in a short run tomorrow if the weather is nice. The kids will be at school, DH will be at work and I will have the place to myself. I'll either end up going for a run or hauling out the Disney luggage and doing my first practice pack for this trip:rotfl:.

That's too funny. Same situation here. I've had our bands pick out, customized, hotel linked, dining linked, just waiting for tickets. Yesterday, we got the invited. I wonder if the MDE people figured, "hey, they've got it all done already, might as well send them an invitation." :scratchin

So, do you plan to run wearing yours? Do you think they will be comfortable to run with? I plan to try it out. I've heard that they can be used at the F&W kiosks (from the "magic band thread") so I'd like to wear it when I run and use it at the after party.

Not sure if W&D will be the same but there were reports that the Magic Bands did NOT work at the food/drink kiosks at the after-party for ToT.

Is it time to go to WDW yet??? I'm having some serious patience issues today. I just want it to be here already. I wish I could just go hang out there for the next month. I've got a 10-miler planned for sunday, and I really should get some sort of halloween decorating going at my household. But otherwise, my mind is already in florida.... :beach:

I think it will be just fine to run in. Here's a picture of the MagicBand and my Garmin Forerunner 10...

My DH says he will probably wear his on his other wrist because he has a HUGE Garmin (a 350? or some other older model). Just for reference, though, the watch I wear on a daily basis is a huge, men's Casio G-shock so I am used to having a thicker object on my wrist. If you are more "dainty" (a word NEVER used to describe me:lmao:) and wear a normal ladies' size watch, then this set up may feel a bit cumbersome.

I'm not sure how I feel about running with mine. Not that it's a huge deal but I didn't even want to run w my after party wrist band on last year. I assume I will have to wear some sort of band for the coast to coast and glass slipper challenge next year so I guess ill have to get over that. I do wear a garmin but I once tried switching my garmin to the other arm and it drove me nuts. I hate wearing bracelets and watches in general so that magic band will probably drive me bonkers all weekend!

Been awhile since I posted, good to see everyone is as excited as me that we will soon be running in the world and then partying in Epcot :cool1:

I cannot wait to get the bands and try them out, sure hope they work at the after party, that will be one less thing I need to carry. :cool2:

Now about the training, I have been swimming a lot, had bad shin splints that caused me to stop running for 10 days. I could feel my alignment was off, but just couldn't find time to get to my chiro. I am back at it now, but taking it easy. So I have been swimming 1 - 1.5 miles 3 mornings every week. Keeping up the cardio fitness( I really push the pace) and remembering how much I enjoy to swim.

Also been having some serious pain/problems with a hip flexor. Need to find a good active release PT. This is a left over injury from a few years ago when I stubbornly ran a full ironman with a couple stress fractures in my femur :crazy2:

Super excited to be get on the plane in a few weeks.

Keep on training.

Ooh, I'm doing that one, too! Running "with" my cousin, and this will be the first time my mom gets to see me race. Woo! Mini family reunion post-race with my cousin, my mom, and two aunts. I haven't run this course before, but I've heard it's a really well-run race.

I was supposed to do my last taper run today/tonight for Hartford, but ugh...NoVa is raw and wet. I took to the bike instead - I forgot what a different workout that is! Time to bring in more of that cross training before November, I think...

XO

We also received our Magic Bands today. :thumbsup2 So excited to try them out. Someone recommended that I put the band in my skirt pocket during the race. That is what I am planning to do since I wear a Road ID bracelet and a Garmin watch. I think the band would be just one too many things on my wrist.

Just curious how long you have been taking the meloxicam? I was only able to take it for 5 days before having a bad reaction that was really scary. Now I stick to arthritis strength tylenol.
