The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

That brings me to today...my long run:eek:. My knee was a little sore and stiff this morning so I took some ibuprofen. I had a pre-run breakfast of toast with peanut butter and banana and drank some water and a little Powerade Zero. I set out with a goal of completing 10 miles at a 13:00 pace. I set my intervals at 4/9 figuring that I would just take it easy and not push myself. I kept telling myself that the time didn't matter...I just needed to finish pain-free.

I felt great:banana:! I had ZERO pain in my knee...for the first time in 4 days! The running made it feel BETTER:goodvibes. I went out on the paved bike path which has a LOT of hills. I kept a very steady pace...every mile was between 12:00 and 12:42. I had one mile that was a 13:00 because I got caught at a fresh green traffic light and had to wait:furious:. Other than that anomaly, I did great! I finished 12 miles with a pace of 12:32:dance3:. After that run, I am 100% confident that I will have no problem finishing the 1/2 Marathon with plenty of energy left over for the after party :yay:.

Now, as I sit here, it has been an hour since I finished and my knee has ZERO discomfort:cool1:. I will have to wait and see how it feels tomorrow since I often have delayed onset soreness, but not usually from running.

My next run is scheduled for Thursday. It will be a short one since I will be in class all day while the kids are in school. I'll have to squeeze in 4-5 miles sometime after 5 and before it gets too dark.

Congrats!!! fingers crossed that things stay pain free from here on out

First of all, nobody say anything...I've probably already thought about it and I do know better, but here goes...For the past 4 days, I have been experiencing increased pain in my right knee. It's mostly been an achy soreness, but sometimes I feel a clicking and popping. Sometimes, I notice swelling, but not very much. The pain comes on worse at night, sometimes preventing me from falling asleep, so I took some Tylenol PM which helped. I haven't run during this timeframe, but it was due to scheduling, not due to the pain. Deep down, I have a feeling that something may be amiss, but so far, it has not been so unbearable that I cannot deal with it. I had a brief conversation with my daughter's orthopedic doctor and he said that if it wasn't getting worse, I could continue to run...for now. I have every intention of getting it fully examined after the race. I have been running on it for over a year now without any significant, consistent exacerbation so I know I can make it through the next six weeks.

I'm glad your knee is feeling better! I don't know what you didn't want us to say... So sorry if this is unwanted. But I wanted to mention that I had the same clicking/popping several years ago when I developed my knee issues. In my case, taping helped bc it helped my kneecap track correctly and allowed me to then exercise my quad which supported my knee. Unfortunately a bunch of other issues occurred as well and that leaves me with some residual problems today so this might not apply to you BUT I actually have less knee pain after I run and when I've been running consistently several times a week. Running helps keep my legs strong and thus my knee tracking correctly. So I'm not totally surprised you are feeling ok. I hope it stays that way for you!

Unless its something more serious, the ortho would probably start with having you do some PT anyway and take ibuprofen. At least that's what the 5 orthopedic docs I've seen in the last 3 years always did.

Think this may be appropriate here...."if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" :lmao: :rotfl2:

Forgive my ignorance, but is there a secret benefit to attending these "meet-ups" other than the socializing? Why would someone crash a "meet-up"?

I don't think people do crash them? Confused by the question...

Yup...that's how I feel too.

I do a lot of lifting and bending in my job (our stretcher alone weighs 150 pounds and that gets loaded/unloaded at least a dozen times a day) so my knees have been very stressed over my 15 year career. I was diagnosed with "bad knees" as a teen and now I found out that my 8 year old daughter has osteochondritis dessicans. I didn't know what it was either, so I did a lot of research and based on the symptoms she has, I realize now that those were the same symptoms and problems that I had as a child and into my teen years. I did have PT as a teen and that kept my kneecap from "popping" (which was actually spontaneous dislocations) but I've never had an MRI or x-rays to look at the bone and cartilage. Since OCD is very rare (15-30 out of 100,000 people have it) and there is a hereditary component to it, I am wondering if that is what my doctor meant when he said I have "bad knees":confused3. The juvenile form can often be outgrown when the growth plates fuse. That would be consistent with my symptoms suddenly disappearing just after high school. My daughter is currently on a "no-impact" restriction...NO running, NO jumping, NO hopping, etc. She has another MRI in December and if the lesion has not improved, she will need surgery:headache:. The reason I am a little leery about my own knee is because *if* I have the same condition, surgery is the only option for the adult form of OCD.

I guess I figure if I am not officially diagnosed with anything, I can't disobey a doctor's order to take it easy:rolleyes1. I'm not sure OCD is the problem, I am more worried about a cartilage issue. A co-worker of mine (who is two years YOUNGER than me) was just diagnosed with degenerative joint disease in her knee. She said she has bone-on-bone contact in three places where the cartilage has worn away. She has also been a paramedic for 15 years and since she is only 36 years old, her doctor will not do a knee replacement. She is a health nut too...normal weight, exercises regularly, eats healthy...so there is no obvious reason why her knee went bad. She gave me a lot of stern warnings to not mess around with knee pain and to get it checked out right away. She does not know if or when she will be able to return to work and she doesn't want me to end up in her position.

I will continue to work through it as much as I can. The race is too close and I have worked too hard to let a little knee pain stop me. I will finish this race one way or another:woohoo:.

I read the link you posted, and it seemed like that group in the article was implementing a registration system for "meet-ups", rather than their current system. The way I read it, the current system had problems with people printing out emails and just showing up. I didn't understand why people would want to do that unless there was some sort of benefit. Maybe I misinterpreted the linked article.

Sorry to derail the thread...

If you don't have a rental car, yes. Cab or sharing a ride is your options for the 5K.

I haven't seen reliable transportation from any of the theme parks (except occasionally HS) to WWoS for years. All of the host resorts will offer transportation directly to and from the Expo.

I have already found the answer to some of my questions, but still had a few more.

We are staying at AKL (non-host) resort. We will not have a car. We will need to take a cab to and from the expo. We can then take Disney transportation from Epcot to WWoS for the start. What about the Finish Line Party? Will transportation be going to all the resorts since that is a hard ticket event or only to host resorts?

Thanks!

Steve's Girl - I have the same problem as you! We're at AKL on Nov 8th and will probably have to cab it back and forth to get to the Expo. I had booked AKL a while ago as it was host resort last year - grrrr.

Yes, I was expecting AKL to be a host resort also. It's the transportation after the party that I am concerned about. At 3am after having ran a half marathon and hopefully had my fill of good food and drink, I really need to make sure I have a ride back to the resort! Otherwise, I might end up sacked out on the benches by the entrance to EPCOT. And since my 14yr old DS will be with me, I am feeling a bit of parental responsibility here.

Yes, parenting will inhibit your drinking...
We lucked out and are changing resorts on that day so we,ll be at the Yacht club that evening. We'll have the luxury of crawling from the international gateway to our room.

The answer to the will buses run from the after party at Epcot to the AKL... No. They only run to the host resorts. Plan on exiting Epcot through the I Gate and hailing a cab at one the Epcot resorts. There will be a few up front, but the resort hotels will have staff to assist just in case the last taxi in line is pulling away as you arrive.

Pre-race, yes, take a bus to Epcot then walk over to the W&D Bus line for transportation to WWoS...

Just checked online and cab fare estimates are as follows:

AKL - WWOS = 14$
EPCOT - AKL = 17$

if you are walking up to the cab drivers instead of the hotel getting them you could always ask "how much to get to such and such place" and a lot of times the cabs will give you a price off meter

I believe they have to operate on meters on WDW property... Least, that has been my experience.

Is there a benefit to going to the Expo Friday over Saturday? I fly in on Friday and plan to go to MVMCP that night. I could go to the Expo before the party, but it seems like a lot of running around.

If you are just doing the half, it would depend upon what you plan your Saturday to look like. I believe the Expo closes around 4pm on Saturday so they can clear the WWoS as best as possible and start prepping for the pre-race festivities.

Hitting it first thing on Saturday may be better from a souvenir perspective as they do a better refresh overnight than through the day on Friday.

The irony of it being called OCD is not being lost on me, lol! I look at it this way...my knees may bother me now and probably will the rest of my life, but the ride will have been SO worth it!

Hi Everyone :)
Just joining this thread as my sister and I are running the Wine and Dine this year too!
It will be our first WDW race and our first night race! We are going for coast to coast as we both did a run in DL earlier this year!
