The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I agree...move on. You are always going to have those runs and races that are "It is what is is."

Make notes in your training log about what was lousy about the run. Did you think it was terrible because of your pace, how you felt (dead legs, upset stomach, etc)? What was the weather, what did you wear, eat, what time of day was it? If a morning run - did you sleep well the night before? If an evening run, was your day to that point stressful?

All of these things and many more can factor into what makes a run awesome or an "OMG what am I doing out here" experience.

I have learned so much about what affects my performance by keeping a log. It helps me get over those bad days more quickly because I know what negatively affects me as a runner.

Hang in there. Training is a long road and we ALL have bumps on that road.

Weirdest thing happened to me tonight. I was sitting on the couch with my feet up and knees bent when without doing anything my kneecap on the knee I have had two ACL replacements just popped out of place. It dislocated to the outside of my knee. I couldn't move it and it my knee looked so deformed. I pushed the kneecap back and it popped back into place. Ouch. It's fine now and I don't seem to have any swelling or pain. I'm taking tonight off from my planned run. Anyone ever had this happen? Do you know what might cause it? Should I be concerned?

Peachygreen, don't think I can give you any advice or answers, but just wanted to say OUCH! Wonder how that happened. Hope it stays ok and doesn't happen again.

I don't keep a training log, persay but this advice caused me to think about my first 8 miler and what was terrible. I think that it was the weather for me. I waited a little too late in the morning to start and the heat and humidity was brutal. My shorts were chafing and I drank too much water on my run (again with the heat and humidity!) and cramped up multiple times.

The heat finally broke here and yesterday's 8 miler repeat was a success! I actually ran at about the same overall pace as the first but my splits were more consistent throughout and didn't feel like crying! The heat and humidity were the perfect combination (although there was no cloud cover and the sun got a little intense), I made sure I wore my longer length shorts that don't chafe, and I watched my water intake.

Now on to 9.5 miles two weeks from now! I will never be fast (I am content with being at the front of the back of the pack), but whether I run a mile in 8 minutes or 13 minutes, it's still a mile and I did it!

It is crazy how good run days and bad run days DEFINE us!

Glad that your good run made you feel better!
YAY for getting 8 miles in. That is on my deck for this week or so. It is a BUSY time in our world. My kidlet turns 5 next week. Her big birthday party is NEXT weekend. We're party planning for the biggest Tinkerbell - Pixie Hollow - Periwinkle party the world has ever seen. Or at least the yard has ever seen. :rotfl2: Praying for no rain.

This past Saturday, I ran my first timed race since the 800 in high school. I ran a local 10k race. It is a pretty hilly course. I ran it with my older sister, who is an INSPIRATION and has completed a few marathons. She coached me through it. My first mile was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fast. (she yelled at me) 7:37. I calmed down and took the next one at 8:30. That is when the hills started. And it was ROUGH. I had a few moments that the heat/humidity made it rough to catch my breath. Mile 3 was about 9:02. Mile 4 was the slowest, right around 10. :worried: Mile 5 started getting flatter and I went about 9:30 and Mile 6 saw me back at what I consider my training 'normal' which was 8:40. Then it was smooth sailing into the gate at 9:16. Official time was 55:36. 8:58min/mile. My sister said that I really need to work on a few things. Breathing (I don't nose breath well enough), PACE - I'm all over the board....can you tell????, using my arms more when I run - which will help with my breathing...and opening up when I run, especially when I go downhill. Also, I should take advantage of cutting my corners when I run races. She said that I take everything WIDE, which I do in training b/c I cover more ground. I knew going in that this was a TOUGH course. She said that this was NOT a good course for a first-timer. One of the tougher courses that she, a seasoned runner, runs on. But, I'm cheap, and for $9, I wanted to run it. "You get what you pay for" - one HECK of a tough course. I was thankful for the kindness of the people along the way misting us with their hoses b/c it was HOLY COW HOT! And most thankful for my sister. :worship: She's a running goddess. Without her, I may have taken the right-turn at my grandma's house and given-up. (Gram's house is along the raceway)

All in all. My goal for this 10k was between 56-58 minutes. Getting 55:36 was just plain awesome for me.

Hope you all have a good running week. Lots of civic races for the 4th of July! Don't get too hot and don't forget to HYDRATE!!!!! :lovestruc

ETA --- I did email RUNDISNEY and got my official 10k time added for Corral placement. It converted to a 2:05:00 1/2 marathon time. I've got no clue what the might be for 1/2 placement, but it'll probably not be LAST, anymore. So, GOAL achieved!

Silly me...I offered to work today for a friend so no sleeping in on the holiday:rolleyes2. Fortunately, this shift doesn't start until 8:30 so I didn't have to get up extra early to run. I haven't run since my 5K last Tuesday so I really needed to get out today. It's cool out (63 degrees) but very humid (95%!) so I was sweating while stretching in the driveway:goodvibes. I know I've gained weight (about 8 pounds from the "summer snacking") so I don't feel as light on my feet as I used to when I started training. Fortunately, I can still meet my goal. I did 3.03 miles in 35:46 for a pace of 11:48. I am really not unhappy at all. I even found an app that sets my 4/2 intervals for me so I can just set that and take off. DH found an armband that holds my iPhone without having to take it out of the case so now I can run hands-free:cool1:. My next purchase is the Nathan hydration belt. I'm still trying to decide between the 4-bottles or 2-bottles. I know I will have to eventually start drinking during my runs (right now it is just before and after) but I am not sure if I will need all 4 bottles or if 2 will be enough.

Those belts are expensive so I guess I'd better get off to work:drive:. Have a safe and happy 4th!

Just an fyi. I just found a Nathan belt at Marshall`s for $24.99! It was about ten dollars less than everywhere else. They had them in the checkout lane.

Thanks! I know where I'm going tomorrow:scratchin.

I got 'em!:thumbsup2 I got 2 of the Nathan 4R belts, one is grey and one is navy blue. I also got a black/neon green fuel belt with 2 bottles. My intent was to take the grey Nathan for myself and let DH choose between the other two. I got home and DD10 snagged the fuel belt! She is now all ready to go for a run with me as soon as DH gets home from his run:cheer2:. My intent was to try and go 6-8 miles again, but since DD is going to go with me, I may have to settle for a little less. That's OK though because I am so glad that she wants to get out and go with me. It's 82 degrees and HOT and she has been camped in front of the TV for the past three days (while I was at work!). I will be happy with 13 minute miles if it means she goes with me:cool1:. She said she wants to go at least a 5K so we'll shoot for 2.5-3 miles in this heat.

We're back! The belt is fantastic!:cool1: No bounce and it wasn't heavy or bothersome at all. It did slide up a little once or twice (when I pulled out one of the bottles) but it was easy to fix since the velcro closure is in the front. DD has to learn to pace herself. She kind of pooped out at the end:faint: but she did good. We started with a 1/4 mile walk (pre-measured so I didn't start the GPS) and then ran 3.1 miles at the 3/2 intervals. Our final time was 39:43 which meant we did a 12:49 pace. It was really hot (85 degrees) and sunny but low humidity (39%) but we had our water. Including our 1/4 mile walk, we did 3.35 miles at a 13:00 pace so we made our goal:yay:.

Oh, and another thought about the belt...I mentioned to DH that he now has 28oz of space to hold his Grey Goose slushies:woohoo:. He now has his own "fanny pack" to wear in Epcot:rotfl2:.

Phew! Had my first run back at high altitude this morning and it was rough! We were on vacation back at sea level for five weeks so my body has really lost its endurance. Still, I did manage 2 miles in 19 minutes without dying. I will try to keep increasing at quarter mile intervals all week an aim to begin my training plan on the 16th and just take it slow until I am fully adjusted. The good news is that, if I stick to my training, running the race in Florida after training in Colorado will be a breeze, right?

iPhone 5 question. I just bought the iPhone 5 and I bought a new holster for running. Needless to say the new holster sucks and I'm looking for new ideas on what to use for running cause I need music for running. I am also not sure about using an armband. I have never used one before and I don't think I'd like it. What do you use?

I love this idea, thank you, time to go get me one, and one for DW and one each for the DDs, that way I will have 112oz of slushies :)

Well, I'm in a pickle:confused3. Today is a run day and I have a 5K on the schedule for 7pm tonight. The problem is that there is a 40% chance of thunderstorms! The race is along the lakeshore which makes predicting the weather even more difficult. The storms tend to either die out or strengthen when they cross Lake Michigan so who knows whether or not the race will even happen. Right now, it is about 75 degrees and overcast, but not raining, so it would be a good time to go for a run. Would I be OK if I ran 3-5 miles this morning/early afternoon and still did the 5K tonight? I don't want to skip a run this afternoon only to have the 5K cancelled due to weather. OTOH, I don't want to risk overdoing it by running twice in one day. I don't think I would have a problem, but I don't know if it is OK from a training/injury prevention standpoint.

Just scrolling through this thread and came upon this one. kristenrice, I think this is the same 5k I was suppose to run. I ended up breaking my foot that morning. :sad1: I'm a newbie runner who recently lost 40lbs and was finally fit enough to compete. This was my first race and I was devastated after all my training effort. My DH felt so bad for me that he is taking me down to run the Jingle Jungle 5k this Nov. :cheer2:

When I first started running, I used an arm band, but was never very comfortable with it. I eventually got an iFitness hydration belt, and now I always run with that, even if I don't use the bottles because the run is short, just so I can put my phone in the pouch. :)

I'm finally feeling like I am getting on track after battling hip bursitis since December. Ran 5 miles this morning in just under 50 minutes. I have a half last Saturday of Sept, followed by Wine and Dine!

Officially kicked off training this week. I did 5-1/2 miles this morning. I joined the local Galloway group. I am running with the Disney marathon training group. So I will definitely get my mileage in. I need to figure out a taper as I am not going to do 20 miles the week before our half.
