DD7 (Kaedyn) didn't run the whole way but, in retrospect, that is good. Over the past month, she'd complain on and off about her knee being sore. I remember that as a kid (and even to this day), I would get achy knees for no apparent reason. Well, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed her hobbling at gymnastics class and not putting any weight on her left leg. She said she couldn't walk on it anymore because it had "popped". She didn't cry at all, but she'd wince when she tried to straighten her knee. Knowing that my girls can be drama queens at times, we took her home, propped her leg up with an ice pack and gave her some ibuprofen. We figured she'd forget about it in the morning. Unfortunately, morning came and she still couldn't (wouldn't) walk on that leg so DH took her to the orthopaedic walk-in clinic. The doctor x-rayed her knee and, as luck would have it, she has been diagnosed with osteochondritis dessicans

. She has a "well-defined lesion" to her left distal femur but no free-floating fragments were noted on x-ray. She had an MRI last week and her follow-up appointment is tomorrow to discuss treatment options. From what I've read regarding symptoms, I would be willing to bet that this is the same condition I had (have?) when I was always told I couldn't run because I have "bad knees"

. It is rare (15-30 cases per 100,000 people in the general population) but it is more prominent in adolescents, particularly those involved in athletics. I played competitive softball from age 6-20 which is when my knee pain was at it's peak. I frequently had my knees "pop" for no reason other than walking, which is another symptom. Since I started running, I have had almost no knee pain. I do get some aches occassionally, but I take a couple ibuprofen and it's gone. I guess maybe if I had it, I outgrew it.
DH is almost ready to start running again. He wanted to go today, but he is still sore and doesn't want to "jar" his shoulder at all. I told him to go see the ortho guys that DD is seeing for follow-up since they seem to be on top of things. They specialize in sports-related injuries and rehab so I think it would be a good choice for him.
I ran today...again. This time, I wanted to try and run at least 3 miles since I haven't gone that far in about 3 weeks. I managed to eek out 3.9 miles in 47:27 (12:10 pace) before I got home. I probably could have gone farther or pushed myself harder, but I did run almost the entire distance. There was about a half-mile total that I walked, including the 1/4 mile warmup walk so I am not disappointed. I'm going to *try* and get up early tomorrow (4am) to get a run in before work, but the snooze button always seems to call my name
