The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I have been feeling a little run down the past week or so. I think I had some sort of non-descript virus. My whole body ached but I had no fever but I couldn't manage to run at all.

I'm finally feeling a little better now. I've been walking again. Today I did 3.2 miles (walking) at lunch another 1.5 miles with the kids tonight and finished it up with 30 minutes on the elliptical.

I figure I should be ready to run again in the next couple of days.

We all need some extra rest now and then, it is going to happen. Glad you are feeling better. You got in some good miles yesterday. ;) :cool1:

Awww, sorry to hear that. You're doing the right thing by easing back to running slowly. BTW, I'm in awe that you average 40-45m/month! That's awesome! :cheer2: I hope to average those kind on numbers in the future. It's been ~3 years since I did 10k training and I've been averaging 5k runs or less since then. So I have quite a bit of training to do between now and November! But I'm looking forward to the challenge. ;)

Thanks! I know it's best to start back slowly but I do not have a lot of patience. Lol. I try to look at the restraint as part of practicing holdin back adrenaline so I maintain pace and don't go out too fast in a race. (which I tend to do.) Most of my runs are also about 5k, but I made a conscious effort to make a 3.5-4miler my regular "short run distance" this year as a mental exercise. I was hoping to also get to 4 runs per week by the summer but that might not happen until later this year. Oh well. Adapt and move on.

Congratulations on your first half marathon, dlbwright! :cheer2:

Thanks for the advice about park days too - we only plan on doing 2 park days in total - but now we will consider the Thursday before the W&D half for our first park day.

How is everyone doing with their training?

I've been running straight 5k's lately, but I started "Bridge to 10k" app today...did terrible. I think the heat/humidity got to me and I didn't bring water since I'm not used to needing it...took lots of walk breaks. I think I will dig out my old running belt w/water bottle and try to bring that along next time.

I, personally, am in the middle of 2 weeks off. I've put in 5 half marathons this year already, and W&D will be #13. My legs were pretty dead, so I decided to rest them. Next step is to start back up, start eating properly, and get faster. As a "bigger" runner, I feel like the heat and humidity of southern Illinois really effect me more. So, not looking forward to starting back up!

Anyway, check my blog if you're interested! Been a while since my last post. www.snellsracechase.wordpress.com

My training is stinking up a storm right now. I hurt my foot 3 weeks ago and although I can run, I know from past experience that I need to get back in slowly.... I've done a grand total of 4.25 miles so far this month. :( prior to that I was averaging 40-45 a month. :)

I'm building up from 1.25 mile runs this week to 2 and then to 3. And HOPEFULLY by mid-July ill be totally back in the swing of things. I've been spending a lot of time at the gym, just haven't been able to do my regular runs lately. It's driving me bonkers!

As for my travel plans, this year DH and I plan to do a little park time Thursday night and Friday, none on saturday, and take it easier on Sunday then leave on Monday. Last year I waited until Sunday to hit the parks and my foot was a little injured (same foot actually) and I pushed myself too hard so I didn't enjoy as much.

I need to take a page out of your book! I can't believe after not running for two months, that my 3rd day back I already have IT pain. :scared: I guess starting back on a slow 2-3 mile run is just too much. :faint:

My running was going great until Mother's Day. That's when I was diagnosed with strep throat:headache:. I'd had it for several days but figured my throat was sore because of allergies. By the time it was diagnosed, I was really sick. I had IV antibiotics and steroids in the ER and then sent home on 10 more days of antibiotics and more steroids.

I was off from running for about 2 weeks. I did the Color Me Rad 5K to get back into things. It wasn't really a run because I went with DD7 and it was her first attempt at that distance. She loved it!

I've been really bad with my training but I am starting to get back into it. Yesterday, after work, I wanted to try and do a quick run. I was thinking 1-2 miles since there was some severe weather approaching. I guess that was the ticket! I did a mile in 9:39! I have NEVER broken a 10-minute mile:banana:. The bad part was that I was so winded, I had to walk 1/4 mile to get my breath back. I ended up going 1.67 miles in 18:17 with a 10:57 pace. I do not consider it a training run but more of a push to get back running. I didn't have time to go too far but I also didn't want to go out and trot at a 12-minute pace for only a mile and a half.

DH suffered a setback. He crashed his bicycle two days ago and injured his shoulder:headache:. He didn't break anything and his x-rays showed some "arthritic changes" which he kind of figured. He will probably see a sports medicine/orthopaedic specialist within the next month.

Hi Pluto

I was actually going to recommend u ease back into it more slowly when I saw your post yesterday. Even though you were walking around Italy for days, I find that running taxes my muscles much differently. Hang in there and don't try to jump in too quickly. Your endurance probably will let you go 2-3 miles but your legs need time to readjust! (ive learned this the hard way over and over.)

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I just cannot believe after 2 months off, these IT's STILL need more time. But I am being much more diligent about the PT exercises this time around. And trust me, my chiro is going earn her $$ on me! ::yes::

Way to go on your new personal record!!!! Love seeing your DD running too. Did she run the whole way? So sorry about your DH, hope he is back up and feeling better soon.

DD7 (Kaedyn) didn't run the whole way but, in retrospect, that is good. Over the past month, she'd complain on and off about her knee being sore. I remember that as a kid (and even to this day), I would get achy knees for no apparent reason. Well, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed her hobbling at gymnastics class and not putting any weight on her left leg. She said she couldn't walk on it anymore because it had "popped". She didn't cry at all, but she'd wince when she tried to straighten her knee. Knowing that my girls can be drama queens at times, we took her home, propped her leg up with an ice pack and gave her some ibuprofen. We figured she'd forget about it in the morning. Unfortunately, morning came and she still couldn't (wouldn't) walk on that leg so DH took her to the orthopaedic walk-in clinic. The doctor x-rayed her knee and, as luck would have it, she has been diagnosed with osteochondritis dessicans:sad1:. She has a "well-defined lesion" to her left distal femur but no free-floating fragments were noted on x-ray. She had an MRI last week and her follow-up appointment is tomorrow to discuss treatment options. From what I've read regarding symptoms, I would be willing to bet that this is the same condition I had (have?) when I was always told I couldn't run because I have "bad knees":scratchin. It is rare (15-30 cases per 100,000 people in the general population) but it is more prominent in adolescents, particularly those involved in athletics. I played competitive softball from age 6-20 which is when my knee pain was at it's peak. I frequently had my knees "pop" for no reason other than walking, which is another symptom. Since I started running, I have had almost no knee pain. I do get some aches occassionally, but I take a couple ibuprofen and it's gone. I guess maybe if I had it, I outgrew it.

DH is almost ready to start running again. He wanted to go today, but he is still sore and doesn't want to "jar" his shoulder at all. I told him to go see the ortho guys that DD is seeing for follow-up since they seem to be on top of things. They specialize in sports-related injuries and rehab so I think it would be a good choice for him.

I ran today...again. This time, I wanted to try and run at least 3 miles since I haven't gone that far in about 3 weeks. I managed to eek out 3.9 miles in 47:27 (12:10 pace) before I got home. I probably could have gone farther or pushed myself harder, but I did run almost the entire distance. There was about a half-mile total that I walked, including the 1/4 mile warmup walk so I am not disappointed. I'm going to *try* and get up early tomorrow (4am) to get a run in before work, but the snooze button always seems to call my name:lmao:.

Wow, it is great that you caught your DD's condition at a young age. Hopefully, you can stay on top of it to help prevent additional injuries. Sounds like she is quite an athlete. Hope your DH gets himself a little sports rehab soon. My DH took 6 months to start physical therapy after being diagnosed with tendonitis in his knee. Hoping he can start his training on schedule now. Great work getting out there yourself and slowly rebuilding mileage.

I'm having some of my fastest runs in years lately. I don't know if it is the elevation change or the cortisone shot but I'm feeling great.

I'm glad someone is having fast times! I ran last night and felt terrible. My legs felt like they weighed 1000 lbs. Of course this was right after dinner and after I did a Jillian Michaels workout DVD earlier in the day. Maybe not so smart. Doing a 10k on Sunday so hopefully it will go much better! (Fingers crossed).

Capeseal - So glad you are feeling better! :thumbsup2 Congrats on the fast runs! :cool1:

kristenrice - that is a kewl your daughter did that with you. Just being together is so important. My dd said she wants to run with me when she gets older. Good luck with her apt next week.

shellymu - I love my Jillian DVDs, but she will work you hard! You are brave to do a Jillian and a run in the same day! :lmao: I always do them on different days. Have a great time in your 10k on Sunday, let us know how it goes!

Who is running this weekend? I have a sore hip, not sure what is going on but I have been cleared to run Sunday in the Johnny Miles 5k. I had been really hoping to break 40 minutes in this one, but I don't think that will happen now. But that's okay!! At least I can run!!

I'm not doing a race, but hoping to get in a 6 mile run outside this weekend before the FL humidity/heat index get too crazy!

Good luck on your race this weekend!!;)

I have a 5 mile run for my Dumbo training (well, it supposed to be 3, the short run for the weekend after the long run but I'll go straight into marathon training after Dumbo and want 5 miles to be as easy for me then as 3 is now)

And thanks for all the well wishes on healing and faster times. But, I should clarify, that fast for me is only sub 10-minute miles. So, I ran 3.5
miles yesterday in under 35 minutes which, for me, is pretty great. I had been averaging 10:10 before my injury became acute. I'm neve going to be an exceptionally fast runner. If I can be a 9-minute miler someday, I'll be surprised and stoked :-)
