The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

You were 175 out of 179 with an 11:48 pace? Oh man, I'm in SO much trouble. At this rate, I'll be dead last. Right now I'm only between a 12:30-12:45 pace!

I say GREAT JOB at that pace!!! I'd be super proud to run 6.2 miles with that! So way to go!!!

Nicole, Now I feel bad. :flower3: I am done comparing myself to others. Maybe we all need to do that who thinks our times are so bad. The article that capeseal posted just really made me think about things differently. :scratchin:p It does not matter our times, just that we are out there. Dead last is better than did not start or did not finish. We can do this! :cheer2: I am not a competitive runner, I am a recreation runner and that is all there is to it. That's my story and I am sticking to it! :thumbsup2

Peachy - I had to chuckle as I did the exact opposite. Registered for the race... then finally got plane tickets and park tickets and after party tickets and probably also MVMCP tickets... and have yet to book a room! :)

Jean - Thanks for the first hand experience. Makes me feel better about renting from AVIS and probably will secure it on Saturday so we don't have to rush.

All - Regarding times (which I don't think is a nosy subject) it seems to me that most Dis peeps fall in the "semi-competitive to recreational runner" category. Like, I've never run across an elite runner in here. Not that you aren't out there if you're reading this. The vast majority of people seem to be from like 9 - 13 minutes per mile, all of which I think is great. The fact that any of us are even putting one foot in front of the other is cool. I, myself, am typically a 10-11 MPM person. I'd love to do 2:15ish for the W&D, but I also anticipate being pregnant in which case a 2:45 time is more likely.

But I agree with others - it's hard to compare. Especially since running is such a solo sport. Kinda. Well it is for me anyway. My pace is my pace and if you are slower or faster then me I don't really care, I just think its awesome that you are pounding the pavement and making it to the finish line.

I like this! :thumbsup2 Its so true. The fact that we are doing this this, fast or slow, is pretty impressive. 13.1 miles is nothing to sneeze at. :faint:

When I first got the bug to do this, last Nov, I was just thinking I want to avoid being swept. Then I thought well, 3 hours would be good. Now seeing what I can do when I push myself (Ive gotten up to 11.3 miles in about 2 hours), I would love to see under 2:30. But if I dont, as long as I can cross the finish line, on my feet, and get my bling, I will be happy....and proud. ::yes::

Denice, that is how I keep trying to think of it. I guess I will just lay it out there. :scared: I was 175 out of 179 for the 10k. I finished in 1:13:30. Their official pace for me was 11:48, but I think my Nike app was a little under that. I was really upset with myself doing so bad. But I have never been a runner. I started in January at 40 1/2 years old. But that is what I keep telling myself. I am never going to win and that is ok. But I am out there, while a lot of my family thinks I am crazy and they won't walk let alone run. I actually like your quote too, I'm just in it to finish it. That is my new motto! :thumbsup2

You should be proud of yourself! I think it sounds like that was just a tough race. I was in a 10k last month. I finished in 1:09, my pace was 11:17 and my place was 312 out of 504.
I found someone who finished the race that I ran with a 11:50 pace and they were 331 out of 504, so if you would have run with me, you would have been about 330 out of 504. I Hope that puts it in a little better perspective for you. : ) Keep running!

Some of my favorite motivational quotes for running that fit in with the discussion:

"It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit." - Dr. George Sheehan

"It is not so much that I began to run, but that I continued." - Hal Higdon

Love these!!!! I'm going to print these out :)

Is there any way to use Disney Gift Cards to enter the race or do I have to pay with a CC?

A PP is right, no gift cards for registration, I tried lol. But yes, since you register through Active.com and not Disney, you can't use Disney GCs.

Getting excited! I leave 6 months from today. Added some roomies and upgraded our resort today. I was planning on driving down from NC since it's usually much cheaper but I checked SWA on a whim yesterday and they had super cheap tickets, so I booked a ticket. This means no 10 hour car ride each way(including the day after the half, which would have been awful), and extra time at Disney. Since I'm coming in early Friday I'm going to do MVMCP, super excited.

This is sorta what I used to be afraid of too when I started racing. I am not a fast runner - I would be very happy with an 11:48 10k pace. Fortunately, when I looked up prior years results for the 10k that I'm running in September, that time will put me about 2/3 of the way back in the pack. If I run that in my may 10k, I'd be about midway in the pack. So it depends on the race. Both of those races have 2000-10,000 runners. I say I'm just in it to finish it, but then I get out on the course and I get this mental image that there is NO ONE behind me and it's not until we hit a switchback or turn and I can see that I'm not last that I start to calm down. It's a mental thing for me. When I hit Epcot (mile 12ish) in the Wine & dine last year I was at about a 12:30 pace, so I had built up a good cushion from the sweepers by then. But I saw these guys on bikes (who ended up NOT being the sweepers) and I totally panicked. :scared1:

I'm definitely never going to be "in it to win it" and so I'm "in it to do the best I can and have FUN!" That's why Disney races are awesome!:thumbsup2
The guys on bikes were probably medical peeps. They are your friends.:goodvibes

I don't worry about the sweepers anymore, but it was really scary the first couple of races--that whole thought of not finishing.

I don't know if this will make sense, but it took me about 2 years and one really nasty marathon in January to realize, you can have trained well, be ready to go, and things can still go wrong. That doesn't mean you are under trained, just that it wasn't your day.

With the times that you are running, I hope you can relax and not worry about the sweepers this year. :)

Just to throw a little bit of jumpiness to your already nervous tummies.....

:rockband: :rainbow: 186 days until race day! party: :jumping1:
:goodvibes

Just nosy, what are some of your goal pace times?

I'd like to run 10-11 minute miles. I would also like to break 10 minutes on one mile (probably the first one, which is all I will get DH to run with me.)

I know 10-11 minute miles is a big discrepancy but I really don't know how training will go and how the humidity and elevation changes will play into my run. Last year I really struggled with the heat and humidity but I also know that training at over 6,000 ft can have some advantages when you drop down closer to sea level.
I would love to be at 2:09:59. (Just can't break under 2:10. :) ) Realistically, with all the issues I fight, I will probably finish sometime between 2:18 and 2:30. Have to see how it goes over the summer. :goodvibes

I had a deep tissue massage for my back yesterday and holy crud it hurt, but I am hoping that with time it helps with the running a bit. You know it's bad when the massage therapist puts biofreeze on your back and tells you to use an ice pack when you get home.:thumbsup2

Rose- you are right- my massage therapist says I have the tightest neck muscles she's ever seen. Also, I know exactly what you mean about running with "issues." I am pretty sure I can train to get under 2:30, but with my knee problems and shoulder problems and all kinds of things, I really have to make myself hold back sometimes and I know it's the right thing to do. I'm not running because Im aiming for the olympics, or a college scholarship or even an age group award. I'm running because three years ago I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to run again and I don't ever want to take it for granted. Thanks for the reminder!

And yes, I'm not going to worry about the sweepers. But I will say I was pretty relaxed from about mile 4-12. Just taking in the sights of running thru Disney with thousands of other Disney running fans was so exhilarating.

I don't ever mind pulling out the chick card and making it all about the bling!! :lmao:

And sometimes I just want to find the source of that little voice and choke the crap out of it! :lmao:

You are correct... dead last IS better than not starting or not finishing. Time to re-arrange my attitude & go with being proud I am even attempting this!!!! I gotta keep telling myself... I got this!!! (even though I'm not so sure!). :goodvibes

To build excitment I spent yesterday researching my 'costume' for the race .:)

OMG. I read this and realized, ME TOO! :yay: 6 months! So close yet so far...

Our resorts and flights are booked. God bless Southwest Airlines for letting folks cancel and re-book flights...my flight going down only cost me $50 since I had credits to use, and my husband's cost $70 after using his credits! :thumbsup2. The times are pretty awful, but win some, lose some. Sunday is ADR day for us, and then after that we enter that awkward time where everything's planned all we can do is just wait for the trip to get here already! :hyper:

Also, I had my first race nightmare last night. First I'd forgotten to pack my contact lenses...if that actually happened it wouldn't be a disaster, but it would be pretty awful. Then my husband and I completely forgot to go to the 5K! Nooooo...probably not a great sign that these nightmares are starting already!

My two I've had so far is that I get lost on the course and can't find the finish line.

The other is that I show up for the race and it's already over even though I KNOW I'm on time.

Hi everyone!

Six months and one day before hubby and I hop on a red eye plane to Disney! :) It's only been like ONE MONTH since I took the plunge and organized our run/cruise surprise trip for him and I am STILL struggling over NOT SPILLING THE BEANS on a daily basis. It's torture. I am pretty sure that my stubborn side will win over and I actually won't spill the beans until 30 days before departure like I have planned, but ugh it is hard sometimes. At least I have the DIS to feed my Disney addiction since I can't talk to DH about it.

So I have a question for ya'll:

After the Disneyland half in September 2012 I had some pains in my left calf. So I bought some leg compression thingys to wear. Then I look a took about 6 months off of any serious running and have just gotten back into training about 4 weeks ago. I've been wearing the compression thingys but I think they are counter-productive because BOTH my calves, shins and ankles start to hurt during the run and its not getting better. I also have some knee/ankle problems spawning from teenage injuries. Does anyone have any thoughts? Suggestions? I mean aside from the obvious "stop wearing the compression thingys", I'd still like to support myself down there. Maybe I could continue to wear the compression thingys but ice myself before or after the run? Or maybe take a preventative Advil? Just looking for others advice/experience before I start experimenting on myself. :)

- Carey
