The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Congrats! This is something I needed to read today since DH signed me up for a 10k on Mother's Day. The most I have run since November is 4-5 miles and the longest run I've done this year was 4 miles on Saturday so I am feeling very apprehensive and out of shape. DH just said it would do me good to jump back into it with a fun female-only run so now I am going to have an anxiety-filled week trying to run a little farther before Sunday.

Even the pros have pre-race anxiety, so you're definitely not alone there. The trick is to just HAVE FUN WITH IT!

I need to remember this. My 10K on Sat was a little disappointing but I need to keep in mind if I'm not in it to win it (which I will NEVER be), then I'm just in it to finish it.

I posted this in the May exercise challenge thread today and think it will make you laugh.

I have to exercise in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

-Marsha Doble

Morning exercise is no way my thing, but it's still funny either way. See? Made you laugh didn't it???:rotfl2::lmao: It's all about keeping things in perspective.:thumbsup2

I felt so great yesterday after the Broad Street Run :cool1:

Today :sad2: waist down EVERYTHING hurts!! Walking down steps - I look like I am 100. Everyone at work was pretty much in the same boat. But, it makes me wonder if I should really sign up for the Feb Princess race of the 10K on Sat and the Princess Half on Sunday. I know that 6 is less than 10 miles, :rotfl2: but the thought of running 2 today let alone 13.1 - not happening!!

( this is where someone says something encouraging about training and I can do it)

How about this one - You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. -Wayne Gretzky ::yes:: :thumbsup2

Denice, that is how I keep trying to think of it. I guess I will just lay it out there. :scared: I was 175 out of 179 for the 10k. I finished in 1:13:30. Their official pace for me was 11:48, but I think my Nike app was a little under that. I was really upset with myself doing so bad. But I have never been a runner. I started in January at 40 1/2 years old. But that is what I keep telling myself. I am never going to win and that is ok. But I am out there, while a lot of my family thinks I am crazy and they won't walk let alone run. I actually like your quote too, I'm just in it to finish it. That is my new motto! :thumbsup2

You were 175 out of 179 with an 11:48 pace? Oh man, I'm in SO much trouble. At this rate, I'll be dead last. Right now I'm only between a 12:30-12:45 pace!

I say GREAT JOB at that pace!!! I'd be super proud to run 6.2 miles with that! So way to go!!!

This is sorta what I used to be afraid of too when I started racing. I am not a fast runner - I would be very happy with an 11:48 10k pace. Fortunately, when I looked up prior years results for the 10k that I'm running in September, that time will put me about 2/3 of the way back in the pack. If I run that in my may 10k, I'd be about midway in the pack. So it depends on the race. Both of those races have 2000-10,000 runners. I say I'm just in it to finish it, but then I get out on the course and I get this mental image that there is NO ONE behind me and it's not until we hit a switchback or turn and I can see that I'm not last that I start to calm down. It's a mental thing for me. When I hit Epcot (mile 12ish) in the Wine & dine last year I was at about a 12:30 pace, so I had built up a good cushion from the sweepers by then. But I saw these guys on bikes (who ended up NOT being the sweepers) and I totally panicked. :scared1:

I'm definitely never going to be "in it to win it" and so I'm "in it to do the best I can and have FUN!" That's why Disney races are awesome!:thumbsup2

As of today we are 8 months - 4 days in front of Donald.

Remember that for Donald, you will be training through the holidays.

About a half mile into the race, you pass the Epcot exit Once off the bridge you exit onto World Drive and head to MK. Exercise care at the toll booths as there are speed bumps just after the booths..

Hey, coach, did you mean to post this in the thread for the January half?

Just to throw a little bit of jumpiness to your already nervous tummies.....

:rockband: :rainbow: 186 days until race day! party: :jumping1:

Just nosy, what are some of your goal pace times?

I'd like to run 10-11 minute miles. I would also like to break 10 minutes on one mile (probably the first one, which is all I will get DH to run with me.)

I know 10-11 minute miles is a big discrepancy but I really don't know how training will go and how the humidity and elevation changes will play into my run. Last year I really struggled with the heat and humidity but I also know that training at over 6,000 ft can have some advantages when you drop down closer to sea level.

I'm right there with you capeseal! :thumbsup2 I'd like to finish as close to 2 hours as possible, but have to take into account some crowded spots, pictures with characters and stopping to just take it all in! :goodvibes

No goal time for me. I just want to enjoy the course, take lots of pictures and finish healthy. And collect that awesome medal, of course. :)

I worry more about my pace when I run races at home...which would explain why my half PR at home is almost 45 minutes faster than my half PR at Disney :thumbsup2

I'm hoping to not get swept! :)

So I have made airfare and hotel reservations but have still yet to pull the trigger and register for the race. I think it is because the airfare and hotel reservations are refundable and the race registration is not.

Right now I am hoping for a sub 11minute 1/2 marathon pace.

I did my speed test last week and did a 1 mile run at 10:15 min.

My last half (which was in 2008) I finished just under 2 hours 40 minutes. I twisted my knee at mile 2 and hobbled (actually hopped) across the finish line. I'd love to train and do sub 2hrs 30 min even with a few photo stops this time. To do that I probably need to train at a 10:45 pace which is a bit faster than I am doing now, but I have time to get my mileage and distance up. I'd be happy with a sub 3 hour race though.

Hey, the idea of heat and humidity is throwing me a bit (I'm in the UK!). I hope to finish under 2hrs and my aim is probably 9min/mile but this will change massively if its warm and depends on tiredness! Hope to have ppl to run with, it makes it so much easier :)

My word, training at 6000ft is immense! Go you!!!

I have a car rental question. Normally I would just do busses but DH and I are leaving early Sunday morning to get to Ft. Lauderdale for a 4 PM cruise departure, so after doing some research I am renting a car and probably picking it up Saturday and returning in Sunday as the price is the same and it's one less thing to do Sunday morning.

Does anyone have any experience with renting a car from the Hilton hotel on Disney property? I was going to do Alamo as I guess that's the "official" rental agency and the car center in at the Swan, but it turns out Avis has a car return REALLY close to the pier in Ft. Lauderdale so that one makes more sense to me. I have NEVER done a car rental at WDW. We're going to be staying at the Poly. Does it cost to park there overnight? How long does it take to actually 'secure' the car (so that I can plan my Saturday). Thoughts?

I have rented from the Avis at the Hilton across from DTD. It took less time to walk from the bus stop at DTD, give the clerk my credit card, sign the paper work and drive away as it does to rent at MCO. If I timed it I would say about 30 minutes or so, once you arrived at DTD.

And we just did the complete opposite this weekend, from Ft. Lauderdale to WDW (note: don't sail the week before a race, not sure why we thought that might be a good idea...). Avis was super close and friendly.

If you are staying on Disney property, it doesn't cost you to park, but you need to have a parking pass printed from the front desk to display on your dashboard.

I think renting a car on Saturday will certainly save you time and hassle on Sunday.

I've done all three W&D's and ToT-10 miler. People are always very, very sick at the end because they don't figure out ahead of time how to eat for the night race.

Whatever you choose, you should definitely practice it along with a few night runs before the race!

I would second this. My tummy is picky, even pickier when I go for long runs. Practice and use trial and error if you can to see what time frame works for you.

I love the fact that they moved this race to the end of the Food & Wine Festival. It is markedly cooler and less humid. Still warmer than home, but not at all miserable like it was the first year or for Tower of Terror last year.

I haven't really decided yet. Right now, I'd be happy with around 12mm. Last year I averaged a 12:42 pace but ran 13.5 actual miles and stopped for one picture. Plus I was a tiny bit undertrained. This year, I'm thinking maybe somewhere between 11:45 and 12 would make me happy. We'll see. I've been averaging 11-11:30 on my runs lately but that's only been up to 5 miles. I'm actually working on putting together my training plan now. I know I'm faster than I was last year in general, at least now at 6 months out..... I'm just praying not to get hurt between now and then!

Our goals are the same :) I would LOVE to be under 2 hours (even by a second!), but I'm not sure if that's realistic. My first half (W&D 2010), I ran in 2:38... for this year's Donald, I did 2:18. I trained smarter the second time around, so I'm hoping to do more of the same and work on my speed.

That being said, this will just be a training run for me, since it falls within my training schedule for Marathon weekend. My husband is doing this race with me, but like you, I'm not sure he'll want to "hang back" with me once we get going. He's a much faster runner than I am(did his first Marathon this year, at 4:03:worship:), and I know he wants to help me break 2 hours. But I also don't want to hold him back!
