I'm just wondering if anybody saw these...I think there were 2...and would care to give a synopsis? My favorite current station is BBCAmerica but it will probably be a year or more before we see these. We just finished season 2 a month ago as it is.

TIA!

I'm not sure I can stick with this show. It's so painful to watch David Brent. :(

1st Special
--------------

This takes place 3 years after the series.

David Brent is now a sales rep selling cleaning products and a minor celebrity doing personal appearances at nightclubs. He believes he was 'set-up' by the BBC when they made the original programmes.
Gareth Keenan is in charge at the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg, but still being wound up by Tim.
Tim still has feelings for Dawn but says that he will not pursue her on hearing she is returning for christmas.
Dawn and Lee are staying with Lee's sister in Florida. They have overstayed their visa and are working illegally. The documentary eam offer to pay for them to return to England for Christmas as they can not afford it themselves.

David Brent is continuously revisiting the office, to the embarrassment of Gareth, Area Manager Neil Godwin and the staff. He still believes he is popular with everyone and that Neil got rid of him because of this. He sued the company for unfair dismissal and won, but blew £42,000 of the money making a record of which he sold 150 copies - Gareth bought 5. We see the video David made to the accompany the single 'If you don't know me by now'.
Neil announces to David, Gareth and Chris Finch that he is getting married and to counter this David lies about the success of his love life 'on the road'. He becomes the butt of Finchy's jokes, Finch has moved on from being his ally since he left the company, and is challenged by Neil as to whether he will bring one of his girlfriends to the christmas party. David can not say no without it being obvious he was lying.

David makes a personal appearance at a nightclub where he just walks on stage and says hello - the crowd do not know who he is.

Gareth helps David join an online dating agency as he attempts to find a date for the christmas party.

Gareth holds a meeting to brainstorm the christmas party. Keith suggests inviting girls and a wet t-shirt competition.

David takes part in a minor celebrity 'blind date' competition in a nightclub dressed as Austin Powers and is rejected by the girl who, again, does not know who he is. He gets into an argument with her backstage and she throws her drink over him.

2nd Special
--------------

David and Gareth are going through the details of the women sent to him by the dating agency deciding who he will see. Neil checks that he still needs two tickets for the party so that he can bring his girlfriend.
Gareth announces that Dawn is visiting and suggests Tim keeps his thoughts to himself this time.

David has his first 'date' and embarrasses the lady by talking about breasts the whole time.

Dawn visits the office and falls easily back into the ritual of winding up Gareth with Tim.

David calls another potential date but hangs up when, after saying she will not need anything to recognise him by as he has been in 'The Office', she says she hopes he is not the awful boss.
David has his second date, but he is not impressed with her and they sit in an awkward silence and at the end when asked if he would like to do this again says 'wouldn't have thought so'.

David brings his dog, named Nelson after Nelson Mandela, to the office. Neil objects to David disrupting work and tells him not to visit during office hours. David just takes this as another sign of Neil's jealousy of his poularity. He tries to prove this by asking if anyone wants to go for a drink with him but is met by a stony silence. Eventually Tim takes pity and says he will go for a drink the next day.

David makes another personal appearance at a disco but is hit by various objects from the audience. His unpopularity is gradually dawning on him and he tells his agent he is packing it in and wants to appear on 'Parkinson' instead (a popular UK chat show).

He is shown alone in a hotel room with a cigar and a glass of whisky fantasising that Wernham Hogg will sack Neil and beg for him to return having realised their 'mistake' in getting rid of him.

David and Dawn attend the christmas party. David appears to have been stood up by his date and Tim stands awkwardly with Dawn and Lee, as Lee puts down Dawn's ambition to be an illustrator.
David's date, an attractive lady, arrives and they get on like a house on fire - much to Neil and Finchy's surprise.
Tim and Dawn are getting friendlier when Lee tells her it is time for them to leave. There is an awkward farewell with Tim and she walks out as the DJ (Keith) plays 'I want you back for good'.
Dawn opens her present from Tim in the car. It is a paint set with the message 'Never give up'.
The party is in full swing and David is very impressed with his date and she is equally impressed with him. He sees her to her cab and promises to call her.
Dawn returns to the party and kisses Tim. When Gareth says to be careful as she has a fiance she replies that she doesn't any more and they leave the room together as 'Only you' plays.
The workers have a group photograph taken at the end of the party and David asks Neil to leave the group so that the 'old gang' can have a photograph taken. When the flash fails, David does an impression which has everyone laughing.

The programme ends with David asking the crew if they everything they need and walking out of shot.

Thank you so much! Asking made me feel like I was opening a christmas present early, but really I know BBCA will not play it till next year, if that soon, and I just couldn't wait. The second season broke my heart!

I knew they wouldn't really end it on a great note for David, but the Tim/Dawn thing was nice. I've felt so bad for him, and I've known girls in her shoes before. I actually have a little thing for Tim and am happy to see him happy. I even cheered for him in Love Actually!

Thank you again. So hard getting excited about a show and then having to wait and wait for it. They are planning an American version of The Office and I know its not even going to be close to the original version. Someone involved will think that americans won't get x,y, or z, and dumb it down. Even with Gervaise's hand in it, I see it going the way of the US version of Coupling (shudder).

It was probably the best note that they could end it on for David. He may have found a girlfriend and there was a small amount of rapport between him and the office staff.

Shame that that is it for 'The Office' but better that than dragging it out and lowring the standards.

Hope you don't have to wait a year to see it as there were lots of little sub-scenes that would not make sense in a brief description.

I can't wait to see it in person. You did a great job telling what happens, but still leaving a lot of it to be discovered when I finally do. Perfect!

I know what you mean about dragging out shows. Rarely do they know when to say when here, unless of course the show is brilliant then they cut it off at the knees. The Office has left me wanting more, but also unsure I could handle more.

Hoping its not a full year, but accepting most likely it is. No word on the bbcamerica website yet.

Guess I'm going to have to find a new show to love. I've seen all the Couplings a few times, we are just getting the Braithewaits (what a soap opera!) and about a dozen design shows. Oh, and I may just have to check out Parkinson, which we do get here, just to have the frame of reference when David mentions it.

What a great synopsis! I saw the shows and would have struggled to sum them up as well as you have.

Great to hear that it's proving popular in the US. We Brits are always led to believe that the Americans just don't 'get' irony.

I know what you mean about it being painful to watch - I think that part of the experience of watching it is having to cringe at some of the absolutely awful things that Brent says.

A true classic, I believe. I'm sure it will still be re-run many years from now.

yeah, its pretty embarassing, actually, our reputation. And trust me, there are plenty of American's who fit that bill, but there are so many who don't! The Office is one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time. My dh and I were talking the other day and saying other than survivor (just can't avoid it, we get hooked every time) and news shows we don't watch any network tv. There are some cable shows we like, and I'd say 3 of our top 10 shows are on BBCAmerica. Unfortunately, BBCAmerica is not offered everywhere. We've lived in several different places where it wasn't offered for any price. thankfully for the last year or so we've lucked out and had it as part of our digital plus package.

I can't even imagine what will be done with the US Office they are developing. I was very annoyed with the whole US Coupling thing. First off, I'm a huge fan of the UK version, so I'm a bit biased. They took the show and re-made it for us (gee, like we couldn't understand the original or something?), miscast it and misdirected it. Then when it flopped (and I tried to like it, really I did, but it was unwatchable) they claimed its because American's don't get British humor. Um, no, its because it was a god-awful version. Everyone I've talked to who has seen the UK version has agreed with me so far, so I know its not just me.

Enough, this is turning into a rant when it shouldn't be. :)

I'm so glad they ended the second part like they did.If it hadn't ended with something upbeat for David it would have been a mistake I think.

David had gone from being cringe making at times to it being too painful to watch him! There was no relief from his humiliation at all, where as in the series sometimes although he was embarrassing (like when the two offices amalagamated and he took the new staff to the pub,his jokes and camararderie fell flat BUT you felt agreement with David that they were a miserable bunch) he would be right about what he was going on about.:(

I loved it when he finally snapped at Finchy,I cheered:eek:

Mtemm, you are so right about Coupling. I hated the American version. Why didn't they just import the British actors? Yes, the writers are superb, but the actors are what makes the show work. Why did they even have to have an "American" version? Why not just buy the rights to the British show and play it over here? Everyone I've turned on to it thinks it's a scream.

It's not the American viewing public who are idiots.

btw for you Brits who want to check out what's available to us over here via BBC America, they have a website (doesn't everyone).

www.bbcamerica.com

Steph - I'm surprised BBC America shows At Home With The Braithwaites, as this was an ITV production i.e. on the independent channel.

Would you know if they show it unedited? We enjoyed this prog immensely but there are expressions used and certain scenes that might be too overt for US tastes?

I like the Braithwaites too Shirley. I think Amanda Redman is so pretty, although I don't like her bleached hair. I don't think it's as popular as some of the other programs on BBCAmerica though.

I don't think it's edited. There was a scene in one of the earlier episodes where the neighbor and the window washing boy were going at it in the tool shed. I hope it's not edited, that's kind of insulting--like, we can't handle it or something.

The Arts & Entertainment channel plays a lot of British documentaries (that one where people go around England digging up old stuff), TechTV plays robot wars (not my fav), Travel Channel also seems to get a few British shows. Take a look at A&E's website and you'll see that there are quite a few British programs there.

Oh yes, we get ITV news too

I don't think Braithewaits is edited, either. They did change its time slot from 8pm to 10pm, and BBCAmerica is part of a digital package in most areas, not part of basic cable. I can't imagine what they would have left out based on the current content we see. Way racier than most US shows, although nothing compared to like Sex and the City, etc.

I agree by the way about Amanda's hair. I thought she was stunning as a brunnette, it just brought out her eyes, whereas the bleached blonde washes her out.

Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.

We also get quite a few british programs on PBS.

well, we finally got to see these episodes of the office on bbc america. they were aired as a single 2 hour special and were wonderful!!!!! I was just thinking about my post last year asking for details...seemed like we would have forever to wait before we could see it. they were well worth waiting for (even though I cheated a bit asking for a synopsis). great show!

Their coming out on DVd soon and extras include the full David Brent video for "If you dont know me by now" and hes recorded the tune he did on the team bulding episode the full title escapes me but its something like "Hot Love on The Freeway"!!
Its a classic anyway!

Watch out for a show called 'Little Britain'. Not sure if they'll air it over there or not - but it's outrageously funny!

Julie

yep, we get little britain. I haven't gotten into that one yet for some reason. not sure why. I watch a lot of bbc america

another one I haven't been able to get into is The Worst Week of my Life. I don't know what it is, but instead of finding it funny I just get so annoyed. ugh.
