The Nosh Heard 'Round the World: Larded and Loaded v2.0 (index complete!)

I know that it's all about the money, and I kind of hope that people shy away for a year or so, so that WDW evaluates WHY, but I really doubt that will happen, and they will continue to shove as many people as possible into every event they host. Sigh.

Food sounded good though! :thumbsup2

I like the event too much to dismiss it completely, but I do think I will probably forego events, especially if they are held at the Festival Center. I liked the French Regional Lunch well enough, but it was pretty predictable, but still tasty. Oh, but that's in my next update.

1500 is too many for that type of event unless they take out all tables. We have tasting events here and there just aren't any tables so there is no mad dash. It's made for a much more pleasant evening overall.

Food looked great but it sounds like it looked better than it tasted. The truffles look and sound yummy, though!

I do admit visiting the truffle table more than once, and I took truffles back to the villa with me when the event was winding down and they were trying to herd all us moo-cows out of the venue. I still think if there were no tables at all, people would STILL complain, simply because there were no tables.

Nope. I'm booking one next year. But one only, not two like this year.

Yeah, I'm figuring that I'm still doing a PFTS next year. I better book around the same time as Brenda, because she said she'll buy me a Grand Marnier Slushie. :rotfl2:

Wow that's alot of tasty food.
Great updates & as I have never done an event like this, I found it very interesting.
Oh ps........12 days!!!!!!!!!:cool1:

Love the reviews Lori! I am with you and still have a place in my heart (and stomach) for PFTS!:thumbsup2 I am sure we will do one again next year. I can't believe I am thinking of next year but then DVC - we already have reservations! Now it's only .. 9 1/2 months till we find out the special events and 10 until we book! :rotfl2:

Well, it's been a month since my last review. Bad Lori! I'll try to finish up on these soon. I have two more after this review and I am done!

French Regional Lunch at Bistro de Paris. Winery: Maison Louis Jadot (Burgundy region)

I wanted to preface this with my ignorance of many wines. I am not at all familiar with many French wines, so I thought the French Regional Lunch would be a good event to book. I did this one solo.

It was a bit awkward to find out where to check in at Bistro de Paris. Nobody who worked there seemed to know what any of us were talking about when we said we were attending the French Regional Lunch event. One of the cast members (and I use that term loosely) directed us (myself and a husband and wife) to head upstairs. When we went upstairs, another cast member said we needed to be downstairs. We asked him to verify where we needed to be, as we've been told to come upstairs. He finally directed us to wait in conveniently located chairs rather than go downstairs.

While I was waiting, I had a conversation with the couple. They told me that they wanted to attend Party for the Senses the previous night, but the event was SOLD OUT. That blew my mind, because in years past, I had never heard of the event being sold out. Apparently the event can hold 1500 people, and by the way it seemed crowded the night before, I could believe it.

Soon we were being led inside, and I was seated at a 4-top table. A guy who was also there solo was seated with me, and I discovered that he's a DIS member, JiminyFan. He seemed to be very knowledgeable about wine, and I had a nice conversation with him as people were entering the restaurant. And we both were snapping photos like Food Paparazzi. So it was all good. ;)

I was pleasantly surprised that a lovely British couple that sat at our table was part of the RADP nosh group from a couple days earlier! Andrew and Sheila were a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the event a lot because of the table mates.

We had this sitting in front of us. Doesn't everyone deserve to have their napkin folded like a dinner jacket?

Here's a less washed-out view of the table setting at the table next to us:

DSCN1654.jpg

What's inside the velvet bag? A Maison Louis Jadot keyring. Sorry about the blurry photo.

DSCN1655.jpg

Amuse Bouche time. We had smoked salmon on crostini and a paté topped with a wee l'il gherkin. Ain't it cute?

DSCN1656.jpg

Pardon the broken paté.

DSCN1657.jpg

This was simple enough and tasty enough. And it was paired with Pouilly Fuissé, 2007. But I think I should show you who our presenter was. His name is Marc Dupin, and he couldn't have been cuter or more charmingly French. The photo doesn't do him justice as I caught him mid-speak:

DSCN1658.jpg

He stood next to our table, trying to be in the center of the room so that all tables could see him. He had a lot of knowledge about the wines we were drinking, and he was naturally funny. Did I mention he was cute? :rolleyes1

Now for the meal. I won't type it in French. I will provide the English translations.

First course: Escargots with parsley butter in puff pastry, frisée salad with an egg poached in red wine
DSCN1659.jpg

There were two wines served with this. Puligny-Montrachet, 2006 and Meursault, 2006. Both were white wines that paired well and also did NOT pair well with items on our plates. I tasted each wine alone, and then tried it after a bite of each part of the course. I'm trying to work off memory, but I knew one paired well with the egg, and the other paired well with the escargot. But they didn't pair well with both.

I think the Puligny was good with the egg, and the Mersault with the escargot. I found it amazing that I could tell when the wine seemed to "clash" with the dish, and my tablemates seemed to agree with my opinions of the pairings. Oh, how did they taste? Yummy. The egg was creamy on the inside, and the escargots was drenched in buttery sauce, just the way I like them. The puff pastry reminded me that I could get these snails as brioche poppers at the kiosk outside for a lot less money.

Second Course: Beef tenderloin Burgundy-style, glazed potatoes, green asparagus and morels
DSCN1660.jpg

Two red wines were paired with it. Beaune-Bressandes, Domaine des Héritiers, 1er Cru, 2005 and Pommard, Clos de la Commaraine, 1er Cru, 2005. Of the two wines, I really liked the Pommard best. Actually I think the Pommard was the favorite wine I had that afternoon.

Unfortunately, I was a bit embarrassed for Bistro de Paris for serving this to us. The beef was overdone, and the asparagus mushy. Yes, MUSHY. The only part of the dish that seemed to be cooked well were the potatoes. I did eat everything because the sauce was tasty, but it was not up the quality I expected for Bistro. And I know the rest of my table agreed.

Here's a pic of the wines we've had so far:

Dessert: Poached pear & prunes in Côte de Beaune Villages
DSCN1662.jpg

Well, the dried pear ring was nice. The rest of it? Bleh. The pears were poached in the same wine served as the last course, and they really didn't have a "dessert wine" to showcase. So the kitchen tried to force the dessert to match the wine by poaching the fruit in it, Côte de Beaune Villages, 2004. It did not work. And I was a trooper and tried the prunes, but they were pretty gross. I had a few bites of pear and was done. Needless to say, I didn't like it paired with the wine. And the wine itself? I didn't like it nearly enough as the Pommard. Oh, did I mention that the pear was HARD? I have to wonder if the pears were ripe enough to cook, because you'd think after poaching, they would be spoon-tender. They weren't.

So what did I think of the event overall? I liked the presentation, and not just because I thought Marc was eye candy. He was fun and informative, so I enjoyed that part of the meal. But the meal itself? The words boring, uninspired come to mind. By that I mean, if you were going to a French meal, and you know it's going to feature Burgundy wines, how stereotypical is it to have escargot and Boeuf Bourguignon? I was hoping for a bit more creativity on the menu.

And when two of the three dishes failed to meet expectations, then you have to wonder if the event was worth the money you pay for it. When you think about the wines served, they didn't bring out the Thunderbird, so at least you know you're getting quality in the wines, at least. They'd have to really improve on the food portion if I were to consider doing this event again.

Next: Vicki and Al's Diner makes up for the mediocre food at Bistro de Paris

That pear looked great, sorry to hear it didnt taste great.

How many would you say were at this event?

Looking forward to Vicky and Al's!

It definitely looked like it should have tasted good, but oh so disappointing. :)
I'd guess there were about 50 people at this event, give or take.

Looking forward to Vicky and Al's!

As am I to tell you about it. It was definitely still a must-do splurge.

Hey Lori...

I will read your update tomorrow .. just wanted to say Happy Holidays since I have 35 minutes left here on the west costal and I hope your holidays were fun and full of good food and drink! :yay:

Hey Lori
Lovely pictures. We like Louis Jadot wines & usually keep a few bottles on hand at home.
Sorry the food wasn't what it should have been......but those gherkins reminded me of your food at Cafe Orleans. :goodvibes
Hope you Christmas was very Merry.

I had a very quiet couple days off. I hope you had a wonderful holiday. :)

LOL! I forgot I had gherkins with my lunch at Cafe Orleans! I seemed to have had a gherkin theme with my trips without realizing it. And I never have gherkins any other time, ever. Wacky.

I have enjoyed reading everything so far! Although I'd love to do PFTS sometime, I know darn well the no table thing would not fly with my family. Oh well, I will have to live vicariously through others.

I look forward to reading more! :goodvibes

I tried to post yesterday after you posted your Bistro update and my computer had a brain fart. :headache:

Anyhoo .... I'm a little jealous that you were on the receiving end of cool schtuff from Louis Jadot but I feel that has been mitigated by the menu you were served, which doesn't much appeal to me. I must say, when it comes to F&W events with little perkie-poos you seem to have the Midas touch! :thumbsup2

I should be posting my Bistro event later today and then you'll see why I liked our menu better (and I ate most of it, too!).

BTW, we've tried the following with our fabu chocolate liqueur cups:

Brandy Milk Punch
Mocha Kaluha
Vanille Royale
Port
Whisky

May I just say .... THEY ARE TOE-CURLINGLY TASTY!!!!

Thanks again!

PS. I had to start a second review thread so be sure to come by and say hello ... again. ;)

Just finished reading about your Jiko Wine dinner experience. All I can say is WOW! What a fabulous evening!

....back to read the rest.....

Thank you for the glorious food and wine porn. The Jiko dinner, P4TS, all of it looked so good. First time in years we've missed the F&W festival, so it's nice to see all the great stuff.

I don't think I'd have a problem with the no table thing if I wasn't taking photos of all the food. My advice would be:

1. Wear comfortable shoes you can stand in for a few hours.
2. Don't get caught up in the Running of the Bulls before the doors open.
3. Wine lanyard. Loved mine, but your mileage may vary. ;)
4. Many people will share a table later in the evening; it never hurts to ask for temporary sharing.
5. Put the kids in the kid's club at the resort. It's really an event for adults. Yet I always see elementary age kids there for some reason.

I hate it when my computer is flatulent, too.

I would gladly trade my keyring for mostly edible food. ;) Only the escargot and egg starter was decent. I'm not terribly picky, so if I say the rest of it was god-awful, I'm sure you could believe it.

I'll be sure to be suitably jealous of edible food, as I stated in your thread.

Oh awesome! You really gave them a bit of a workout! I hope they help you ring in the new year. :goodvibes If I had them, I'd probably try them with port or Bailey's (chilled, of course!)

Been there, posted that. ;)

Wow, you've got a lot to catch up on! Good thing I put that clickable index of links on the first post. :thumbsup2 Jiko wine dinners are now up to par for me as a dinner at Victoria and Albert's. Except the wine dinner is less formal for sure. You feel like you're at someone's house for dinner. It's really a heck of a lot of fun.

Thank you for the glorious food and wine porn. The Jiko dinner, P4TS, all of it looked so good. First time in years we've missed the F&W festival, so it's nice to see all the great stuff.

Vicarious food thrills? Glad I can provide that for you. :cutie:
There's still more to come!

Poached prunes? Poached PRUNES? :lmao:

Why don't I remember the poached prunes?

My French Lunch was awesome though. :confused3 We had little pistachio thingys.

Prunes are ok when they aren't poached in god-awful wine. It was a failure of epic proportions. :scared1:

I have French Regional Lunch envy because of you, you know.

To offer a different perspective, we were at the same French lunch and were very pleased with the food. Our beef was excellent and we enjoyed the dessert. Others at our table felt the same.

I wish I had been at your table when the beef was served. Nobody at our table had any pink in the meat at all. And if you didn't have mushy asparagus, I'd be jealous of your table, too. I'm not sure about those pears and prunes, though. I think if our pears were softer, it might have been a better experience.

I'm sure it's just me, but prunes have no place in a dessert. They are for the moving of bowels only. :rotfl2:

And on that note ... Happy 2009!!! :thumbsup2
