The next time you turn on a light think of these people whose way of life was destroyed this past Christmas. This coal ash spill was 40 times larger than the Exxon Valdez disaster. No lives were lost but the beauty lost in the first part of this clip makes me want to cry.

Next time I turn on the light, I will be so thankful for all of the coal miners that provide us with the power to have electricity! Without them or coal we would really be in the dark! Coal makes the world brighter:)

I live in TN right now and it's horrible seeing this on the news. I feel horrible for the people in that development and can't help but wonder about health affects later in life. I guarantee if it was my house I'd be demanding that the TVA buy it. It'll be years and years before the reprecussions of this comes out. Those young ladies could have babies with birth defects because of all this.

We are friends with a local lady who is on the state conservation board. She said it'll take a minimum of five years to even halfway right the streams and ponds in that area. Just awful all the way around.

Very sad. I was surprised more people had not viewed the clip referenced on YouTube by the OP.

I think that may be because this clip was just put on YouTube from another site. I am very surprised that we are not hearing more about this. I know that this means more to those of us from this area but the scope of this disaster would seem to demand more attention. Maybe we have become so jaundiced that nothing bothers us anymore. The size of this spill is over 40 times larger than the Exxon Valdez spill and the media seemed to cover that non stop. I get the feeling that it is not being covered because nothing can ever make this area right again so some may think it is better to just not think about it.

It sickens me, personally. It is a situation that demands attention on so many levels. For the environmental aspect, this is something that can never be replaced, and may never be able to be "cleaned up". As for the people's lives effected, items can be replaced, while memories and a sense of home cannot.

When I turn on a light..

I thought about Thomas Edison as I read the prologue of Water for Elephants. It talks about how Edison used a rejected circus animal (an elephant) to conduct an experiment on how strong "his" brand of electricity was as compared to others.

Edison had a public showing with an elephant. He took the elephant strapped up some wires/electrodes to it and well shocked the elephant to death in front of onlookers to prove how powerful his electricity was.
