The Curse of the Poet

Observing and dreaming, this is the crime
To write, with perfect rhythm and rhyme
The sentence is simple but lasts a lifetime
To be isolated, to barely earn a dime

Is it worth it for artistic prowess?
Is it worth it to be blessed?
The words flow freely and express
The constant need and hope to impress

Poets, the rare bunch, have a curse
A want and urge to write in verse
Their eyes turn images into words
The lines of reality are continually blurred

Though they may never receive their due,
Poets are treasures, through and through

It's the middle two verses of one I wrote last night.

We hide under the shadowed dark, not light,
In quiet, silent moves, we work, and work,
With no attention, looking, not a sight
Upon us, not an eye, a smile, nor smirk

The actors dwell on stage in center spot,
They knowingly have full attention there,
Like pampered dogs in show, how proud they trot!
Applause, applause for those whose gift is rare

Yet, do the skilled, unseen have praise now, too?
No, but the sets can tell the story well,
Alas, ‘tis the curse of stage and running crew,
And never does it make us want to rebel

We chose our fate; our frame of life is hung,
But think of crew, heroes of theatre unsung.


I had to write a sonnet in British Literature in iambic pentameter. Aside from a few lines with messed up syllables, I think its decent (I wrote it before school in the morning).
