The *NEW* Polynesian Resort FAQ thread - *SEPT 2008*

This will be our first trip to the Poly and we're celebrating our 20th anniversary. May 30 thru June 6th. I really EXCITED!!:yay:
During our last visit at POP, we had a terrible experience with check out, luggage and transportation back to the airport. In fact it was so bad, my husband wants to drive 12 hours instead of flying so he won't have to deal with it. Can someone please tell me how it all works at the Poly and if they've had bad experiences? We would be flying Southwest or Delta. No sure yet. I know Southwest isn't a partner so would that mean?

Normally it isn't that bad. Because Southwest isn't a partner, all that means is that you can't check in your bags at the resort, but must check them in yourself at the airport. You can go to the front desk at any resort or even in the parks at the service desks and have them check you in at your 24 hour window with no problem. That actually makes it easier, becaue you don't have to stand in a check-in line at the resort, but you do have to schlep your own bags at the airport. ME will load them on and off the bus for you and drop you at the door, so it really isn't a big deal.

Thanks everybody!

Everyone is soooo nice here at this forum.

And I will link to the food review.

Tomorrow night at this time I will be at the HDDR. :thumbsup2

Aloha!

Wish I was checking into the Polynesian and having dinner at the Hoop tomorrow. Have a blast!

Yes, that is exactly what you need to do. Make your ressie first, then contact IPO and let them know what you need! Happy planning!!

momatater is correct.

IPO doesn't handle resort reservations. IPO provides their services to people who already have reservations.

Concierge will usually contact you. But if you're getting close to 180 and haven't heard, then do contact them. Happy planning!

ok, we've decided that we need to bring our own ground coffee and filters so that we can have a good cup of coffee in our room before we leave in the morning. Can anyone tell me what size/ kind of filters we need to bring? I assume it's not the standard size...are they cone or regular filters? Anything else???? Thanks!

The machines are itty bitty coffee makers and the resort supplies the "packet", i.e., coffee wrapped/sealed inside the filter. I would get the small regular shaped coffee filters to use in the mini pot. :thumbsup2

Because of enhancements (in Disney speak) to the reservation system, 180 isn't in effect right now except for Cinderella's Royal Table, Victoria and Albert's and Chef Mickeys. If you want to dine at any of those then contact the IPO after you've made your reservation.

If not, just make your plans and send them into them when they contact you. Or you can make contact first but it's kind of fun to hear from them I think.:goodvibes At any rate, even though they will not be able to get them into the system yet, they can get them lined up so when the booking window opens up you'll be good to go.

Hey everyone! I was wondering is it possible to take out from the counter service restaurant at Poly and bring it back to your room? Aslo, what is the counter service restaurant and any thoughts on the food? Thanks!

Yes you can bring food Captin Cook's back to your room. As for my thoughts about them I enjoyed eating there when my family and I stayed at the Polynesian and my favorite item had to be the Adult Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Yes, you can definitely take it back to your room.:thumbsup2 In addition, I know there are a few items (like my favorite the 'Grown Up Grilled Cheese') is served in a little box you can close up and put in a bag to take back to your room. They usually have take out bags and plastic covers for plates in the same area as where the napkins, utensils and condiments are.

My family LOVES eating at Captain Cooks! :thumbsup2 Besides the grilled cheese (in kid and grown-up versions) you can also get the yummy Dole whip! :cloud9: The CMs at Captain Cooks said I must have worked at Dairy Queen before because of how much Dole whip I crammed into that little plastic cup. :lmao:

One thing I don't like about Captain Cooks (and some other folks will agree) is the layout of the space. During peak eating rush times it can get very crowded very quickly and the way its laid out it doesn't handle the flow of people very well. Just pack your patience. :thumbsup2

We ate food from CCs alot on our trip but rarely ate there. We usually brought it back to our room in the evening or at poolside sometimes for lunch. They have trays for you to carry your food.

I LOVED the pulled pork sandwich and the kids' chicken strips. I also enjoyed the salad and the noodle bowl(sorry can't remember the names). Dh liked the burgers and the pizza. The tonga toast for breakfast is a must do and I usually got a side of bacon or sausage to cut the sweetness a little. The ordering and payment system is a little strange but you will get used to it.

I am excited to try the new sushi bar in April:banana:

The tap water is heavily treated and may affect as much as anything the taste of your brewed coffee. I'd recommend bringing along either a portable filter or bottled water.

Congratulations! 20 years is exciting! What is the secret to such a long, happy marriage?

Did you have problems w/Magical Express? Or the airline? Or a towncar service? Or the folks at the resort?

We've used Magical Express from Riverside & Animal Kingdom w/no problems. On our way down the bags arrived in our room a few hours after us. Just plan accordingly & bring a carry on w/your swim suit or whatever you'll need right away when you arrive. For our return trip we checked in & checked our bags in the resort lobby so we could skip that at Orlando.

Since Southwest isn't a partner, that just means they can't check you or your bags in for the flight. I've never flown Southwest, but I assume like all the other airlines they have on-line checkin? If so & you have a laptop, you can checkin yourself. Otherwise, just get to the airport a bit earlier so you have time to checkin at the counter & check your bags.

Other options would be to get a towncar or a rental car and skip Magical Express. That just means you have to claim your own bags, and allow time on return to check in. Of course nice thing w/those options is you can do a store run on the way to the resort.
I guess the secret is love and friendship. I love DH dearly and he is truly my best friend!

I had problems with the ME at Pop. I'm not trying to slam Pop though. I loved the resort and we had a great time. I don't think our experience is the norm.

With prices of airfare going down, I think we should fly. After reading these posts, it doesn't sound like there should be any problems.
