The NEW Official November 2010 Countdown & Planning Thread ~ Come join us! (Part 2)

We're leaving 2 days before DS16. I couldn't let him miss 4 days of HS. He is going to miss Mon. and Tues. before Thanksgiving. Last year he said they didn't start anything new those 2 days.

He is going to spend 2 nights while we're gone with a good friend. My mother and her husband will pick him up after school on Friday. They will fly into Orlando on Sat.

As far as school goes, no one looks at attendance records unless the student is truant. We have never been denied the opportunity to make up work. I guess we are lucky in our county. Here is my letter to teachers.

:surfweb:Dear Mr. __________,

Please excuse Tim on Nov. 22 and 23rd. We are going to Orlando to visit a mouse. We will gladly make up any missing assignments.

Sincerely,

Lori

I've never had anything but positive responses.

:rotfl::rotfl:I am going to use that!!:thumbsup2

We're at 39 days today!!! :yay: Last night I saw a commercial for the 25% off room rate... during which the family gets picked up for their vacation by Dumbo ride cars... I wonder if Disney is offering this as a new travel option? Sign me up! :lmao:

Was talking to my DM (who is going with us) and we started talking about my letter for getting the kids out of school (need to turn it in by this coming Wednesday). Our school district only allows 3 days for vacation and then the rest will be put on their permanent record :sad2: My kids have hardly missed any school, my DD missed only 1 day last year and my DS missed 3.

What I mentioned to her is that maybe, I will only take them out for the 3 days and then the last two days, consider them sick days. Our school district allows 10 sick days per school year. I still need to speak to DH about this, hopefully he will agree. I know a lot of parents who do this and it doesn't seem to be a problem. What to do? :confused3

That really stinks. Fortunately we are allowed up to 10 days for "excused educational absences". Although the older the child gets the more make-up work there is, which makes you not want to do it so much. I never take mine out for more than 5 days. And am trying to figure out a way to do it next year (with DS starting 7th grade then) where they will only miss 3 days or less. :confused3 We do have to fill out a formal request for the excused absence and list the educational aspects of the trip. But it's more of a formality. I don't know that they've ever denied anyone.

I wouldn't do it if my kids had poor grades or missed a lot of school. But they have excellent grades and rarely miss a day of school other than for the trip!

I hope you can work something out where it doesn't count against them. :wizard:

yay Shelly!!!
Our schools are pretty crummy about missing...before I took my son out, they had sent letters home stating that even if YOU felt like your child was sick, send them anyway, and the NURSE would determine if he/she was sick. Are you kidding?!! So...get a sick kid with a fever up out of bed, send them to school to infect everyone else, just so they can get the tax $$. I really had a problem with that....it is just stupid.....

:cheer2::cheer2:4 WEEKS!!!!:cheer2::cheer2:

Wow that is pretty crummy. We aren't even supposed to send them until they are fever free for 24 hours (with no meds) and haven't thrown up for 24 hours.

Congrats on 4 weeks!!!! :cool1: That means we will be meeting up in 4 weeks from today!! :goodvibes

That is a foolish policy..... they would be spreading their germs all around... Daniel does have one teacher that insists he can't miss class... his health teacher... calculus, accounting, college english...they are all okay with it.. I told him not to worry about it....and his band teacher is my good friend and they are going with us so there is no problem there...:rotfl:

I know...that's the rule that follows AFTER the nurse sends them back home! Isn't that the craziest thing you ever heard!!!!
I can't wait for our meet!!!!! How cool is that gonna be!! When we get our PMs back up and running, I am gonna send you my updated plans...I have changed a couple of things..AGAIN!!! But, once the system is up and I can retrieve & cancel some ressies I am completely done!!:goodvibes I now like the way my ADRs are flowing...the MK ones were not sounding like I thought they should. But,..me and ds11 sat down last night and he let me bounce some ideas around with him and we worked it out!!:thumbsup2 Gotta love Kid Input!! They are so smart!!

OMG!

My family and I will be at CR 11/28-12/04 with my nephew turning 1 on Monday the 29th. I know he won't remember turning one in Disney World but we sure will! When we made our reservations and had to wait to hit the 180 mark for ADR's it seemed so far and now we are in the mid 40's. I seriously cannot wait!

We have never had a problem with our schools for missing days either when on vacation. Our son (4th grade) will miss two days on the back end of our Thanksgiving break but what do they really do on their first days back from break anyways.
I love the letter and may have to use it too. Very cute!!

We are at 39 days and waiting for our Disney mail to come soon.

Our mail can this week too! DME was completely mixed up. Son and daughter are traveling on completely different days and they are backwards!

Glad everything is back up! That might have been the longest 2 hours ever...

We have started packing our nonperishables- coffee, matching (colors) shirts, toiletries, did I mention my coffee... It is really starting to feel like we are getting ready to go to WDW- you know what I mean?!?!

Just FYI- in case anyone didn't already know this: do NOT cut jalapenos without wearing gloves. My hands were already chapped, and I just had 4 hours of really bad pain as the oil worked its way out of my pores...

Lori - Do you mind if I blatantly plagiarize your teacher note? I LOVE IT! I read it to DH and he said, "We should send that one." :worship:

I just realized that I never arranged for our trip back to the airport from BWV! We're renting a car to get there and returning it the next day at the Dolphin. I'll be calling to arrange ME tomorrow (or maybe Monday).

Today I bought a 12-pack of Starbucks Via (their instant coffee), so I can cross that off my list. I also started making our tie-dye mickey head t-shirts. I didn't get as far as I'd hoped, though, because the kids asked to carve their pumpkins, so that project trumped my t-shirts. I was about to say "there's always tomorrow", but I'm running out of weekend days before we leave. It's exciting that its so close, but I wish I could have a few more weekend days to work on my planning.:headache:

Wow... in our school district the rule is if your child has had a fever, you must make sure they're fever free for at least 24 hours before you can allow your child to return. Last year my DD then 7 missed one week and one day of school because she had H1N1 and just couldn't shake that fever!! They didn't even make her make up most of the missed work.

We went to Disney in 2008 in the middle of October. My son was in 11th grade. He brought a laptop and checked the school website, teacher pages and kept up. He even turned in an assignment by email from Old Key West. Sure he had to stay up when we were going to bed and work on his assignments, but it didn't take very long and he was almost 17, he'd have been up that late anyway.

I just don't know why some school districts just don't get it? And you know what? When my son applied for college, not one application asked him if he'd missed school for a family vacation!! :lmao: And what's even more magical is he picked a college just an hour from the Magic! How convenient is that!:woohoo: Instead of son coming home for school vacation.... its... "stay there at school dear... we'll meet you there!!!"

Be my guest. My children's teachers have always gotten a kick out it. Some have said that they had to think about it but eventually got it.

DD14's Spanish Immersion teachers all say, "Oh, you go see MICKEY! We looove MICKEY!" They are so cute.
