The New *Official 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon Thread*

I did a small local 5K with my 5 year old yesterday, and she did great! We walked about half of it, but that first mile was FAST! Wow! I was so proud of her. Last night when the times were posted, I found out that we finished in just under 47 minutes. So, I believe that puts us under 16 m/m. I think there's a Disney 5K in her future on our trip in 2014! :yay:

I'm going to be taking a break from the thread for a while because I have a brand new place to run...I'm getting ready to go to Uganda in a few days with Shot@Life (the charity I'll be running the Princess 1/2 for) to go see UNICEF child survival programs in action! I'm nervous and excited. And wondering if I'll have a chance to run in Africa?

If you're interested, here is a link to my trip blog starting with some pre-trip thoughts about clean water during my long run.

:thumbsup2 Thank you for posting and linking - I'll definitely read-up later! Oh how I hope you have opportunity to run while in Africa; that's my running fantasy! Wising you a safe and informative trip. Kudos for walking the walk. Running the run? Whatever; you get it. ;) :cheer2:

My frustration runneth over.

I had two AMAZING short runs last week, each a little less than 2.5 miles, both without even a tiny twinge of ITBS pain. So I went into my planned 3-miler Sat. with high expectations... only to have them dashed at less than 2 miles when pain nailed my knee yet again.

What the heck was different that time?! I can only pinpoint two semi-logical differences:

1. A much slower pace with a lot more walking, since I did Sat's run with my DS: 1:00/1:00 walk/run intervals. I strongly suspect the transition from run to walk is what's causing knee friction and the more often that friction occurs, the earlier pain will hit. I mostly ran my short runs with few walks and had no pain.

2. Sat follows a rest day. I'm not sure total rest is working for ITBS. I'm way stiff come Sat. morning and it takes a while to warm up.

So I'm going to tweak things and see what happens. This week I'm moving my runs to T, Th and Sat. Sun. will be a rest day following my long run Sat. M will be strength training, W pilates or ballet and F a walk + 20 mins of gentle yoga. I'm also tempted to make my short runs mostly walking for a while to make sure the inflammation in my knee goes away. Maybe 5:00walk/1:00run intervals?

I'm open to thoughts here - I'm starting to panic about falling behind in training! :worried:

Thanks Longhorn 2!

While I certainly don't consider myself an athlete - I am not a total slug:rotfl: I try to stay active on a day to day basis despite not hitting the gym as often as I might wish I did.

My goal is to simply finish... I don't care if I am the very last person to cross the finish line:p! I'm thinking that I will run/walk the coarse and have not expectations of being able to bang on a full on run for 13.1 miles.

Registration is beginning to fill quickly and as you point out, I really need to make a decision and get to training. I just don't want to jump into something that I have no prayer of completeing:rolleyes2

You can do it! You can do ANYTHING you set your mind to!:cheer2:

I was on the fence about registering for the Princess in 2011 (my first half). One day I decided that if I didn't do it, I'd regret it, so i registered right then (only 3 months before the race). Knowing that I was registered gave me the motivation to train. And I have to tell you, come race day I had a BLAST!!!! And when the pain set in around mile 9, the characters, cheer squads and music made the pain get out of my had and I finished with tears in my eyes...not tears of pain, but of happiness for finishing something I never though I could! I've now committed to making this race my annual tradition. Disney definately knows how to put on a race!

I'm registered:cheer2:!! Decided to just bite the bullet and stop prosrastinating. What's the worst that can happen .... I train (which as hvivona said will now be motivated by the fact that I have offically registered) and I get swept during the race. While it will be disappointing - I will still have tried and that is nothing to be ashamed of:thumbsup2 Just need to keep chanting this to myself for next 3 or 4 months:rotfl:

Amykay9377- I will gladly be behing you - as long as I am behind you crossing the finish line!

Longhorns2 - I'd love to have 23 people behind me! Sounds like you had an awesome race!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I'm excited about making this commitment and beginning training!

So awesome! I love that you are doing it together too. Way to go!!

YAY! Welcome to the PHM Family! princess:

A question about the race for those who've run before. Is there continual upbeat music throughout the race or do I need to one earphone my music to keep my pace? Thanks for your patience with a newbie runner

Not continual, but plenty for me. I train with an earphone, but have never felt the need for one at the PH.

I always bring my ipod with me if I'm running a race alone...it tucks nicely into the little zipper pouch that I have on my hydration belt. I normally won't put it in for the first few miles, but I always use it at some point on some of the more boring stretches. Right before the last mile, I play a certain meaningful (to me) song and then put it away...I love being able to hear the cheers along the last stretch! I'd say if you are training with it and have a convenient place to stow it for the race, go ahead and bring it just in case.

Woo-HOO! You can do it! :cheer2: Just registering is half the battle - ignoring that little voice in your head that says, What if I can't do it?! Once you start training, you will be amazed at what you really can do! :goodvibes

I finished my 3rd half in 2:49 not the time I wanted but still a PR.
How did you do on the Tough Mudder? How it the knee?

Well done!!!:goodvibes

My knee gave out long before I thought it would and it was pretty treacherous terrain. A lot of climbing steep slick hills and then sliding back down on top of the actual obstacles. But it was an amazing experience!!!! Such an inspirational outpouring of comradery and teamwork. Everyone helps everyone whether it's a team mate or a total stranger. Amazing!!!

Haven't gotten the Brightroom pics yet but we had a few spectators that got great pics of the stuff that was up front (obviously not the ones up the mountains). There's a ton there, but if anyone is interested:

Love your pics. My legs are killing me today how about you?

So yesterday I did my first ever half marathon to get ready for the princess half. I did it at 3:03:08 which is just under a 14 min mile. I think I'm ready. If my knee holds up.

Way to go! You've totally got this! The princess will be do much fun now that you've gotten the scary part of the first half over. Nice job!

Way to go and congrats! Certainly is motivation for us first time PHM !

Here at Disney doing the wine and food festival...sure hope all the walking is considered "training" :rotfl2: we have looked at last year's race map and for us it seems to be mostly flat except for two ramps/hills. In San Antonio we have lots of hills so we think the race is fairly flat vs. how we are training.
