Hey all you Vonnie fans!!:goodvibes

Write a letter to Norm Noble at the GF letting him know how wonderful she is. :flower3: She could always use the props. She works so hard and makes such magic for the guests.

That would be awesome if we all wrote.::yes::

Channing:)

You have me so excited about our first RPC (and first GF stay for that matter) in May! We have a standard room RPC booked (there are 5 of us). I hope we get a MK view! My DD wants a dormer room, but I'm sure that's out because there are 5 of us. I've noted the room numbers that were kindly listed above, and I sure hope we get one of them!

I don't think my DH is sold on GF:scratchin , and I can't wait to WOW him with RPC. I keep telling him, "You don't understand how great the RPC is." Thanks to this thread, I KNOW I've made the right resort choice for my birthday trip! You guys are soooo keeping me motivated to work hard (I work at home) :surfweb: to pay for the trip! I go to this thread every morning first thing before I start my work. Thanks.pixiedust:

Baby Yeti, you and your family will have a fabulous time at the GF RPC. The first time we stayed at the GF RPC my DH was not too thrilled. After we arrived, he was hooked. :thumbsup2 We were at the GF in April 2008 and unfortunately we could only get the Sugar Loaf Building . It was good but it wasn't RPC and we had a dormer room. Me personally, I would not get a dormer room again as the balcony was very small. The room was lovely but we like a descent size balcony. Also when I make our ressie, I ask them to note it with a specific room number or close to that one. I know it's not a guarantee but we have always been granted the room # that we request upon checking in with CL. Also, back in 2006 my parents and my nephew came with us and it was their first time. I asked the concierge (Meejay) Love her, if she could possibly have a signed picture from Mickey with balloons in Alexander's room. She did that plus gave the same to my DS who has been there multiple times. The surprises were waiting for the boys that night after we checked in and she did not charge us for it. Just simply fabulous. Have a wonderful trip.pixiedust:

I've stayed in just about all of the rooms.:rotfl: They are great.:thumbsup2 Love the view and the convenience.

THANKS!! She is my big baby alright.:rotfl: She is well loved.:goodvibes

Lives4Disney :)

I just love the pic of your baby in the pool. I have two Shiba Inu's and they are very much loved as well. We used to have a Rottweiler that we lost due to an illness 7 years ago  and she was absolutely fabulous. But my Cody and Temari are just as fabulous. No matter what our babies will always love us and be there for us through thick and thin.:thumbsup2

We have stayed in 4304, 4403 and 4404 several times. It is dead center the marina and what a view of the castle. :thumbsup2

I am soooooo excited that my dream is coming true from April 22-29th.:hourglass Not only am I finally going to be able to stay at the Grand Floridian (which is a dream in its self) but we are staying concierge main building.pixiedust:

I would like to call the IPO with a room request. We are staying in a standard room and would love to be able to see Magic Kingdom when we sit on our balcony. Are these rooms in RPC?

I have gathered so much information from reading this thread and I want to thank each one of you that have taken the time to post answers so that everyone can have as magical experiences as you have had.

Can anyone tell me about the afternoon tea with Alice? I know about the Princess Tea Party, but can't find anything on the Alice tea and when I called Disney the CM I spoke to didn't know anything about it and said the only character meals at GF were breakfast and dinner.

I got the chills after reading your post. I remember the first time we stayed at the GF RPC. It was truly priceless. We stay in the standard rooms as there are only 3 of us and they were 4304, 4403 and 4404. 4304 is on the third floor of the main building and that is where the lounge is but we like 4403 & 4404 as they are on the 4th floor and you can see more. If you happen to get one of these rooms there is an elevator not too far from these rooms that you can take to access the back of the GF by the marina. These rooms are also close to the end of the hall way so it is very quite down there. Are you packed yet.:lmao: I know I would be. I am excited for you. :grouphug:

Hi, my daughter does the Alice tea party each trip. It's the Wonderland Tea Party....I think it starts at 1:30 in the afternoon...you have to be there to check in at 1:15. It ends at 2:30....it is held in 1900 Park Fare.

Alice and the Mad Hatter - or sometimes he is substituted for another character - run the tea party. The kids have lunch, decorate cupcakes and play games. They leave with a photo of themselves and the characters and a little bouquet of flowers for their moms. It is really cute and as I said my daughter does it often. :) The CMs that run the activities at the GF are terrific with the kids.

You can now reserve this 90 days in advance. I would asap because last time she did it in October, it seems the max kids have gone down to about 14 per party. I think that's why the cost went up a bit. They used to have tooooo many children per party. They don't run it every day of teh week either....only a few days.

I believe I posted pics at the front of this thread...somewhere on the first couple pages.

Happy planning,
Lives4Disney

So I put these photos up in the huge Resort room photos thread...but felt like sharing it elsewhere on the board too.

I joined my Mom and my Aunt Patti at the Grand Floridian from Jan. 5-11. After they flew home on Sunday, I stayed one night at the Buena Vista Palace to be close to the Downtown Disney late-night bus. I spent a day and a half exploring the Gulf Coast area between Sarasota and Sanibel Island, flying back to JFK at 6:30 this morning.

Patti & Mom checked in to the GF on January 4; I flew in from New York on Monday night. Because January 3 was Patti's birthday, and it's also her 4th year anniversary surviving thyroid cancer, I faxed a letter with room requests and an in-room birthday card. Someone in Disney Confectionery astounded Patti with this:

And that's not all. Someone at the Grand had another birthday surprise up their sleeve.

At about 3 pm on January 4, I received a text message from Patti: "OMG GF upgraded us to main bldg MK view concierge #4407!!!! Did u do this? Thx!"

All I did was gently ask if 4th floor corner rooms were available in Conch or Sago, and Disney gives Patti an upgrade worth over $2k and a white chocolate Mickey Mouse. That's almost enough in and of itself for this jaded pseudo-intellectual critic (and former intern travel writer) to shut up. Reveling in the joy of two sisters after a rough year, plus this view out the window as I arrived? Bang! I'm 8 years old again.

Somewhere between six years of architecture school, world travel, autoCAD and Amsterdam coffee shops...still resides a warm place for this confection and all that encircles it.

This is room 4407 taken from the balcony. That single flip-sofa wasn't as comfortable as I remember the old GF daybeds to be. But the rolling table earns points.

Buon giorno, principessa.

Not that there weren't problems. at 3 am on January 7, the plumbing between rooms 4407 and 4406 inexplicably sent water gushing out of the toilet. A lot of water. The water flooded the first 10' of our room all the way to the desk, and began moving into the hotel hallway. The toilet wan't clogged at the time, but let it be known that all guestroom toilets at the GF have a locked shutoff valve. Yes, locked...a key is required.

Patti, who was unfortunately in the bathroom at the time of the flood, marched down to the lobby after 30 minutes of being transferred to Disney call centers. The bewildered front-desk CM sent a bewildered security guard, whose job it is to supervise the non-Disney overnight cleaning contractors. We were immediately moved one floor down, to 4306. As an eager overnight bellman named Otis helped move (and dry out) everything, some talented plumbers showed up and explained that the GF's plumbing has not been given much attention in two decades. As the bathrooms are placed back-to-back with the plumbing stack between them, our new room was spared the trouble. However, as Otis and I discovered through the next hour...room 4307 apparently flooded the same way. A puddle crept from under its door and drenched the newspaper. Its occupants, who were sleeping during the flood, raised holy-hell the next morning.

Here's the view from the fourth floor hallway. The rest of the pictures aren't pretty.

Now then. Where were we? Room 4306, which was exactly like the previous room except backwards (and with a functioning loo!). The other room is above and one-to-the-left of where I'm standing in this picture.

We were treated to the deluxe dining package and enjoyed dinners at Citricos, Le Cellier, Jiko, California Grill, Mama Melrose's, Room Service, and our favorite, Coral Reef...

And I'm sure this has been posted elsewhere on the DIS, here's the mixology of that martini. It comes with a souvenir plastic glow cube and costs $10 across the park. We ended up ordering them at four different restaurants and have a little collection of the glow cubes...they have five different color settings (blue, purple, green, red, multi) plus one with psychedelic twinkle lights.

And one of my favorite Disney mornings involved free admission to the Magic Kingdom at sunrise to watch the Half Marathonners run through the park. This shot is for anyone who's feeling the folds of time pull on their soul...

Between the actual, real-time jubilation of thousands of runners (including the man dressed as Snow White and the woman in full Merlin regalia) and the juxtaposition of thumping techno music on Main Street, USA, it was one big surprise of a good time.

On January 11, Patti and Mom flew back to Pennsylvania. They had a wonderful time - Disney and all the great CMs at the Grand and at Animal Kingdom (and at Cirque du Soleil) made it even sweeter. They even ran into Bruce Springsteen twice at the GF. I still laugh at his story from the early 80s about not being allowed into the Magic Kingdom because of his tattoos and scruffy beard. Speaking of tattoos, is there a dress code for 1900 Park Fare? at 9 pm in Commander Porter's (the men's store), there was a man buying pants who was told he couldn't accompany his children to the character dinner unless he covered up his leg tattoos.

Since our park tickets didn't expire until midnight, I stayed in Disney. After storing my luggage while motorboating around the lagoon and Bay Lake, I checked into the Buena Vista Palace. I returned to the Grand for dessert, cordials and the orchestra - and then to the MK for extra magic with new friends from Maryland. I ended up taking the boat to the Wilderness Lodge and closing the Territory bar, watching football (soccer) and drinking with an Irish grandfather and his son who recommended places to go on the Gulf coast. After a late photoshoot around the deserted WL, I caught the 1:45 am bus to Downtown Disney and walked across the street to the BVP.

Even though it's not Disney-owned, here's room 2130 on the twenty-first floor at Buena Vista Palace.

I cut off the 32" LG flat panel television.

One sink, but one hundred fifty dollars a night with tax is the special winter rate.

Lake? Hotels. More hotels. Orlando in distance. The vista from the Buena Vista.

Thanks for the info.....
As for being packed, we were just there for Christmas and I haven't even unpacked everything yet and probably won't. To see the suitcases out makes it seem more real and helps to keep me warm when the temperatures in Ontario today are -16 degrees Cel.:rotfl:

Joe Cool, thanks for posting those great pictures!

What great surprises for your aunt...and an amazing upgrade for all of you!

Too bad about the water problem. :sad2:

It's great to see you posting on the DIS again.

And congratulations to your aunt on her recovery.:sunny:

Almost sounds like a heat wave to me.;) That translates to 3.19999 F. We were -23 F in our town this am....or -30 Cel.:scared1:

I think we should start a mass migration to FL.:goodvibes

I left one of our suitcases packed for our return to FL too. It does make it seem closer doesn't it?

Have fun at the GF and I hope you get a MK view.pixiedust:

JoeCool thanks for the great review. Too bad about the plumbing issues..but a Bruce sighting would have more than made up for it this Jersey Girl:)

Shell- I know, right? Patti and I were sitting in the GF cafe eating soup...and Bruce Springsteen walks by outside following a group of kids. He was walking toward the Royal Palm Club 'back elevator', the one that opens across from the three big suites. I asked the elderly CM who was walking around chatting up guests if it was Bruce Springsteen. He put a finger to his lips and nodded, then, ad alta voce, said something like "i wouldn't be surprised at the Grand Floridian", and smiled real big.

Then my Mom came back a few mornings later and said she talked to a guy who really reminded her of "an older Bruce Springsteen" in the concierge lounge, and she said he seemed relieved to be around some peace & quiet. :confused3 She's not a Springsteen fan (she might have been back in the 70s?), but I tried not to lose my sh*t for a second and remembered my Dad's Drew Carey moment ten years ago. A couple days later both Patti and Mom said they saw him with a redheaded woman and a lot of kids...probably their kids and their kids' friends. It seemed like they were traveling in a big group...if I were Bruce Springsteen, would I invite my kids' friends' families on vacation with me?

My Mom's so funny with this whole thing because she rarely recognizes actors or musicians in "real-life". She always tells a story about how once she thought Hume Cronyn was the janitor at a theater...

The last time I had what you could call a "celebrity encounter" (not including the Pope), it was with Bob Stern (the architect whose office did the Yacht & Beach Clubs, Boardwalk, Celebration, et. al...) at my desk in school. My professor lost her sh*t. I came crashing down to earth. I started to learn how not to be star-struck when I met one of my heroes, Ani DiFranco, in a bookstore in Philadelphia. Of course half an hour after we parted ways, I called almost everyone I knew and lost my sh*t.

And about Vonnie and Joe...they are amazing. They made us feel at home. Joe found 2nd row Cirque du Soleil tickets and the 10 am private Safari tour at Animal Kingdom. Vonnie was able to make dinner reservation magic...doing the near-impossible after we had to cancel Cali Grill. She also was able to help me find information on flights and phone numbers a couple days after check-out. Disney's getting a shining letter from us!

Joe Cool, what did you think of the Wildlife Discovery safari? We're thinking of booking that next trip. I rarely see any reviews of it.

Did you ask Bob Stern why his firm designed those itsy balconies on some BC rooms?

Joe Cool ~ I really enjoyed your review and your photos! The room upgrade and chocolate treats were awesome. How exciting for your mom and aunt.
What kind of camera did you use? Your fireworks pic is perfect! We had a similar view from GF this summer and I wish I'd been able to get a decent photograph of Wishes...

And I can't believe how nice your BVP room was. It looks like the new rooms at the Contemporary.

Too bad about the plumbing issues :scared:

Hey everyone...we're back :(
We had a great stay at the GF and I'll post my review either later today or tomorrow along with my pictures.
Nobody got sick, we had 2 great weather days and the rest was cool but it beats the blizzard weather that hit us in Northwest Indiana/chicago.
I'm beat...it was so fun but exhausting. Can't wait to share my thoughts and pictures!
