LittleStinkerbelle - Yes, I always request "upper floor, no dormer" when making reservations (or, often, when I remember later and call back, lol). I prefer the open balconies, you definitely need to stand to see out of the dormers. I have a photo that shows my DD's boyfriend standing at a dormer (he is average height):

Thanks for this I appreciate it! Very helpful!!!

LittleStinkerbelle - glad it was helpful!:goodvibes I read your edit again, and I imagine what is in your memory is having to get up on your tiptoes to see down. If you were on the 4th floor, most of the view would have been below you, and you definitely have to lean over a dormer to see down.:flower3: I'm 5'3" and can't see well over a dormer.

Ah, maybe that was it! In my memory the wall was like over my head :rotfl:, which now looking at the picture that can't be (although I am under 5 ft).

pas130 - I knew you could relate! I am now feeling sad we aren't headed to AKL, as I have a friend there now who is sending photos of her room, the pool, etc. Very beautiful.
AKL is quite amazing....that was our first Deluxe stay 2010...we were spoiled...booked Kidani, and were told our last night was overbooked would we consider a suite for the last night...I was upset about moving...but then I was bitten by the CL bug...it was amazing...DH thought he'd have to carry me out check out day kicking and screaming:lmao: We never left the resort our whole stay

OMG...so sorry, that didn't help you feel better at all:confused: Ugh!
I too love both the GF and the Poly and it's always a huge debate over where we stay. I like the GF just a touch more, but I would not hesistate to stay at the poly. Yes, it's a completely different feel from the GF (and YC for that matter). However, it's so beachy and FUN - especially when you are walking along the lagoon side of the resort by the beach. We love being able to walk to the TTC, and I really like the poly pools. (I love the GF pools too, don't get me wrong).
I am debating this myself....I have a split stay...but to get more RPC days...I could drop Poly and stay 2 nights value...then have a week at RPC...what to do. I love Poly and GF...but the magic in my heart...it's at the Grand :lovestruc

Thanks for the welcome and I thought that may be the answer. I think we will stay at BC for 46-4/9 then switch to somewhere for the rest of the week. Don't like packing again but it is like getting two resorts in on one vacation. DS10 thinks GF looks too fancy but we have loved the dining and pools look great. DH and I just like some downtime in the afternoon to have adult drinks and conversation before we hit dinner ADR's and sometimes firewoorks. Thanks for the information

My DS was the same way, after staying last Summer at the Grand (11 now, he was 10)...he is a believer :goodvibes He really wants to do SAB too...but it will have to wait for another trip...Mommy wants the MK side this trip ;)

bc1836 We are driving too..From NJ. We have driven before, but I have the Dis this time...so I HAVE checked out the thread :cool2:

Hope Lulu'sMom comes home with lots of stuff from her shopping trip at GF :flower3:

I have reserved a TPV room in October for our first GF visit. Should I request a ground or upper floor room? Any thoughts on this? Thanks:)

Green23

We just got back from GF and had a ground floor room in Boca Chica. It had a delightful view of the Magic Kingdom and was just super. We watched the Electric Boat parade each night and the fireworks from our patio. I was concerned when I checked in and was told it was on the first floor, but the receptionist told me that sometimes upper floor views can be blocked by trees. We had no issues at all. We were in the center of the building right off the lobby in an accessible room. Here was our giggle the first night; my Mom who is 85 was very tired so we were going to bed when I heard all this noise at about 9:15, I was all prepared to be mad at whoever was being so disrespectful when I looked out the window, only to find a giant dragon floating by our room!:rotfl: I opened up the curtains and the patio door and my Mom watched from her bed as the parade went by. So cool! You will love it!

That's a wonderful story! Just a little unexpected Disney Magic :wizard:

LittleStinkerbelle - LOL! Memory is a funny thing.

pas130 - :rotfl: Don't worry about it! I enjoy talking about the resorts - there are so many good ones, hence your thread.;)

Green23 - :welcome: Congrats on your first GF stay, you are going to fall in love with the resort.

Upper or lower floor is a matter of personal preference. I like an upper floor, as I prefer a more overall view, but many people like the convenience of being on the first floor. No elevator to wait on, and some DISers have posted the ceilings are higher in the GF first floor rooms.

Ikesmom - I'm with Jungle Cruiser, that is a wonderful story!:goodvibes Reminds me of the first time DD and I were in a Poly TPV room; we were sitting on the beds talking, when a noise disrupted our conversation. Even though we had seen the EWP many times, we were confused for a minute, until one of us said, "Electrical Water Pageant!!" and jumped to open the curtains. What a fun extra on the Seven Seas Lagoon.

That is so cool :lovestruc I can see getting all mad and stomping to the balcony as well:laughing:....sounds magical being able to watch EWP from the bed :cloud9:

I have to say I miss AKL so much...but I wouldn't be able to stay anywhere other than the Arusha savannah :confused3 Spoiled now....unfortunately for my wallet...I love GF a little bit more.....

I didn't let you know about my change yesterday....(I was too busy harrassing the GF IPO)

Dropped Poly...booked first three nights Pop Century...so I can get a week at RPC :woohoo: SO EXCITED. My DH said for me to do what I want...although I do keep asking, are you sure you don't want me to change Pop to Poly? DH actually said "I like GF, I like the Polynesian though, one day....." He likes Pop too, and he was mentioning that he really liked the CL food at GF. He didn't like AKL or YC CL food  Then I told him all the plans the IPO helped me with for our DD's birthday and he said "There's no way you can change it now" Cake, balloons, all for my DDs 6th birthday....and I just have to secure a table in the RPC......I am hoping our room is 3rd floor so we don't bother anyone having tea. My only worry is that my DD4 (soon to be 5) screams when she gets mad....I REALLY don't want the kiddos acting up in the Main building...I will feel so bad :guilty:

for all there May 28th approx 2pm...sorry.....we will only take a small area, and I will share cake :goodvibes

Very exciting, pas!!:dance3: A week in RPC is like heaven, our last visit there was 7 nights and it felt so luxurious.:cloud9: We got in late on the first night, and spent one night at AKL, which is the last trip we've made there. We need to get back there soon, but like you, we have a hard time booking anything but the GF.

A split stay helps, but DD is tired of moving, lately she prefers to stay the whole trip in one resort.

The first part of the trip at Pop we will be recovering from the ride down...hit Star Wars weekend, etc. Then I will FINALLY stay RPC :woohoo: It is nice not to have to move mid-trip...have to agree with your DD. We are staying 3 places, POP, GF, then Myrtle Beach. I plan on doing A LOT of relaxing this trip :cloud9: Well as much as possible with the kids...and LOTS of swimming....I can't wait!!!!! I almost talked myself into doing GV and saving the money....NAH! I'm not practical when it comes to Disney :goodvibes That's why I change so much...all the resorts have their own appeal, but GF holds my heart BAR NONE :upsidedow

Hello everyone...
I'm new to the boards and will be staying @ the Grand Floridian in May. I guess there's a lot of construction going on there now so I was just wondering what suggestions some of you might have in regards to building requests and things of that nature.

I'm hoping my family can check in early or at least store our luggage so we can get our theme park tickets and head straight for the parks!

pas130 - I hear ya, I keep thinking I'll stay at another favorite, and end up at the Grand!;)

If it were me, I think I would save RPC for another trip and do GV this year. I keep thinking they'll have to do a better discount in the coming months, and those main bldg. rooms are sooo expensive.:scared:

Welcome!:cheer2: Glad you've joined us!

Yes, there is a new DVC building going up on the beach between the Grand and the Wedding Pavilion. There is fencing blocking off the worst of the view, but you can still see it from the monorail and the upper rooms that face that way.

What room category do you have booked? That would help us suggest a building. If you simply want to know which building will be furthest from the construction - Sago Cay will be the furthest away, if you look on the map on the first page of this thread you can get an idea of the layout of the resort.:flower3: My personal favorite is Conch Key, as it is close to the courtyard pool, boat dock, marina and a short walk out the back door to Gasparilla's. Boca Chica would be a good choice, too, as none of those rooms should overlook the construction, and it is close to the courtyard pool and boat dock.

Here is a link to an aerial view of the Grand, if you scroll down a bit you can see the beach area under construction: http://www.bing.com/maps/default.as...&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=5219444 WDWKOOK posted a link to aerial shots of the construction, I'll see if I can find it.

Oh, and yes, you can check in early and store your luggage with bell services until your room is ready.:)

Here is the post by WDWKOOK from March 4, with links to aerial photos of the construction.:thumbsup2 And here is a link to a photo on WDW Magic, posted on March 19 (click on photo to zoom): http://www.wdwmagic.com/Resorts/Dis...Floridian-Vacation-Club-wing-construction.htm

I had the pleasure of stumbling upon some wonderful aerial photos taken recently of WDW by Adrian Court. Here are the links to the GF, including the DVC construction:

We will be there in May too!!!! And you should check in early, drop your luggage off. They will text you with your room # so when you are ready to, you can go right back to your room from the parks!!! Hey, you might have a ready room too....you never know :goodvibes

I was chatting with DH about dropping CL...he told me NO  He said having the lounge with the older kids when our little ones were napping was great. And he didn't stop raving about the CMs...(yes this is the same DH talking...) Not to mention my DS11 was asking if he was allowed to go downstairs to hear the piano....I told him he could probably hear the piano just fine from upstairs....it's so funny to listen to my kids the closer we get to vacation and realize how many things they just loved about GF  We did get 25% off so I am happy....could it be more....ABSOLUTELY, but it could also be rack rate :scared1:

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I originally requested a Handicapped room with a garden view since one of the members in my party will be in a scooter. They only have a limited number of rooms so I had to upgrade to a lagoon view.

Pas130- I like that texting option!

This is a wonderful thread :goodvibes (a reflection of GF being such a wonderful resort)

You'll find the GF to be very handicapped friendly, actually disney as a whole is easy to navigate in a wheelchair (DH had to push my sorry self around in Nov. due to a broken foot...easy peasy)

And yes the texting option is great. Check-in, give your bags, an head out to the parks....August we arrived at 1130am and our room was ready, conversely last summer we hung out at the Pool, (this was @ AKL) changed in the locker rooms...it was great. They give you the room key andtext the room # when it's ready :cloud9: I hope you love GF!!!
