Gorgeous pics! I love the little things like the mickey shaped footstool and the fancy dancy toilet paper :goodvibes

Thanks, Cass. There were just so many things I should have taken pics of. I just was so in awe. It was luxurious w/out feeling like a hotel room. It was very cozy and homey and expensivish at the same time. :) I hope to do it again soon on my dime!!

I cried. The concierge staff were waiting for us, looking at us over the concierge office balcony (we were down by the main concierge desk in the lobby, waiting for my DDs to go to the bathroom, LOL) and they knew we were in the GF due to us checking in at this main concierge desk as we were coming from YC with no luggage. They sent Katie down to bring us up, we got off the elevator on the 3rd floor and there were 2 concierge CMs, Heather & Vonnie, waiting for us. They were all smiling and told us we were going on a "Mystery Tour".....They brought us up to the 4th floor and took us down the hallway and stopped 1/2 way and I just about DIED. We have walked past those double doors so many times, and tried to peak in every time, LOL. They told us what they did for us and I cried & hugged them. It just blew me away and we felt so so special. They checked us in and all that jazz in the suite. I have the most beautiful memories of that whole thing. Now my 20th anniversary is in 2008 and I would love to return to that suite. So unbelievably special as I am a mega Walt and art fan. It was the gift of a lifetime.

What a story, Disney magic :) man, I hope you were there for a week!!

Docsknotinn, welcome home.

You mentioned a few things in your post that got me thinking, so I thought I would share a few of my experiences with you. Now, I don’t want anyone who is reading my post to fret. For the most part, my experiences haven’t been anything out of the ordinary.

You mentioned a dirty carpet in your resort room. While I didn’t have that issue during my Grand Floridian stay, I did have a similar issue during my Polynesian stay.

Upon checking into my room at the Polynesian, I noticed that the floor needed a good vacuuming. After fretting about it for 20 minutes, I picked up the telephone and requested that a vacuum cleaner be delivered to my room. I must admit that requesting a vacuum was a first for me, especially since I was staying in a concierge room at the Polynesian.

A vacuum cleaner was eventually delivered and Housekeeping offered to vacuum the carpet for me. I told them that I would feel better doing it myself, so I spent the next 15 minutes giving my room a good vacuuming. When I was satisfied with the carpet, I turned the vacuum cleaner back over to Housekeeping who had been waiting for it outside my door.

Sure, I could have let the dirty carpet slide until the next day’s room cleaning, but my young daughter was traveling with me and she walks around the room barefoot. Because of that simple fact, I wanted to get the floor cleaned as quickly as possible and thus my unusual request for a vacuum cleaner. I should note that I didn’t regret taking the time to clean the carpet (plus, when I relayed the story to my husband that evening over the telephone, he got a good chuckle out of it since he is the domestic one in our family not me).

In regards to any carpets that needed to be shampooed, I haven’t run into that situation personally in WDW (at least I haven’t requested that a carpet shampooer be delivered to my room just yet!). However, I have traveled to WDW frequently enough over the years to have had slightly damp carpets upon check-in at quite a few of the resorts – the All-Stars, BoardWalk Villas, Old Key West, and Grand Floridian immediately come to mind.

I was usually informed upon check-in that my room would not be ready until after 3 PM because the carpets had been cleaned and were in the process of drying. Sometimes I was told that the shampooing was done due to the normal maintenance schedule, while other times I was told that the shampooing was done due to unusual soiling by the prior guests. It didn’t matter to me what the reason for the shampooing was, I was simply happy to hear that my room would be especially clean upon entry later on that day. I wish you would have gotten such a room, Docsknotinn.

Your mention of thread-bare sheets was also something that I didn’t run into during my vacation. During this vacation I actually resort hopped 7 times during a 5-1/2 week period. The bedding in all of my resort rooms was perfectly acceptable. I have no complaints in that regard. However, your comment did remind me of a vacation a few years ago when I discovered a gash in one of my sheets that was approximately a foot long. I didn’t understand how such a tear could have gone unnoticed when the sheets were placed upon my bed, but I also knew that a Housekeeper would not have intentionally placed such a sheet upon a bed. Somehow that sheet had slipped through the cracks. I chalked it up to sheets happen.

Since it was late when I discovered the torn sheet, I didn’t bother to request a new set of sheets (the sheets and mattress pad were clean and that was good enough for the night). I made a mental note to inform Housekeeping of the torn sheet the next morning, but in my haste to hit the theme parks with my family and friends the next day, the torn sheet completely slipped my mind. Oops!

When my family got back to our room later on that night, I suddenly remembered the torn sheet. I held my breath as I pulled back the covers on the bed. I was pleased to see that the sheet had been replaced. Housekeeping had obviously discovered the torn sheet while they were making up the bed that morning. Wonderful!

The rest of my vacation passed with flawless bedding, but I should note that I eventually alerted the resort to the fact that if they had one torn sheet in their inventory, they might have more. I did that in hopes that a future guest wouldn’t wind up with a problem sheet. I’m sorry to hear that your bedding wasn’t acceptable. I tried hard to make sure that wouldn’t happen.

In your post you also mentioned dining issues. I am not a chef like you are. Heck, I’m not even what anyone would consider a cook (that’s my husband’s job since I have no domestic skills, except now it is known that I can operate a vacuum cleaner, but please keep that info between us, okay?!). I had no dining issues with the Grand Floridian Café, Narcoossee’s, Gasparilla Grill, 1900 Park Fare, or Victoria & Albert’s (I didn’t dine at Citricos during this vacation). All of my meals were good ones and the service was great. But since you are a professional, you see things that people like me don’t see. I know you have chosen to keep what you saw private, however, I sincerely hope you did at least share your concerns with Disney since you used to work for them and you know the proper channels to report issues.

So, even though I didn’t have identical issues to yours during my own vacation, I have had similar ones. Nothing really out of the ordinary, and nothing that would keep me from going back to WDW. Well, nothing, that is, except for that vacuum cleaner incident. Now that my husband knows I can vacuum, he’s been asking me to pitch in around the house a little more. Drats!

Again, welcome home. And happy (belated) anniversary.

For my upcoming GF stay, I have requested castle view, dormer room in Sago or Conch. I have a LV ressie. I did not put non-smoking on the request b/c I know Sago and Conch are n/s buildings. Is this too risky if we really want a n/s room? We will be arriving early in the day (our flight leaves at 6:30am and we land at MCO at 9am). Should I have my DU agent put the n/s request on? I just don't want too many requests. But I REALLY want a castle view room. Thoughts???

Thank you!

That sounds nice. My house is very much more like the Wilderness Lodge, so anything GFish would look very out of place here, LOL. I just enjoy the GF atmosphere as a vacation break. Nice to visit, but I like coming home to my cozy & woodsy WL. (Now if I could only buy one of those teepee chandeliers at the WL!! - LOVE those  )

Lives4Disney :sunny:

ooohhh WL stuff is nice to! very cozy feel! It's funny how us weird disney ppl relate the decor of our houses to a disney resort theme! :teeth:

now if only the darnstuff wasn't so expensive...

Scanne, for my Lagoon View reservations, I usually only requested a non-smoking room with a castle view. I have been fortunate to have received both of those things when they were requested. By the way, the exceptions to that rule were when we stayed in the suites. I was always informed upon check-in that the suites were "smoking optional." The good thing is that none of us ever smelled any cigarette smoke in the suites. Housekeeping definitely did a good job with that.

If having a non-smoking room is important to you, definitely ask Dreams Unlimited Travel to note it on your reservation.

I hope you get all of your requests upon check-in. And if you don't, I hope you have a wonderful vacation anyway.

This is going to be a bit of a convoluted post, but if you bear with me, I think you’ll get a chuckle or two out of it. Here goes…

After recently having spent quite a bit of time sorting through photos from this summer’s vacation, I thought it was time to give my eyes a much deserved break. Since I had been itching to catch up on the GF FAQ thread, I turned my attention to it and began reading the pages where I had left off earlier this summer.

At the end of June, DisneyEG had asked a question about the photo of the Grand Floridian that was found on the official WDW website: click here. DisneyEG wanted to know what building that was in the photo. The answer to the question, of course, was that it was the Main Building, but TammiMcMan put an interesting spin on things with her response: "They've definitely done some photo shop magic to the picture though, as that's not how it's set up on the property. It does look like you'd walk out the back door and be standing on the beach, but in fact, through that exit, there's a pathway that leads to the theme pool and then to the beach."

Since I had been spending so much time with my photos, I remembered seeing some that had been taken from the water. I sifted through those photos and found one that was taken with an angle that was similar to the photo on Disney’s website: click here.

When I viewed my photo side-by-side with Disney’s photo, it didn’t look like any Photoshop magic had been done. It looked like Disney was simply using a photo from quite a few years ago. A photo that had been taken before the Summerhouse had been put in place and before the Beach Pool had been built.

To see if my hunch was correct, I set off in search of some old Grand Floridian photos. Since my older photos of the resort were actual photographs and not electronic images (plus, I had no idea what closet they were gathering dust in), I turned to the Internet in my quest. It was time to let my fingers do the walking.

It wasn’t long before I had found quite a few photos. The vast majority of the photos, however, had been taken within the past couple of years (the early 2000’s). In the photos that had been taken in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s, well, their images were too tiny, bitwise, to really see much of anything except for the resort’s main building. I could never determine with any degree of certainly whether or not the Summerhouse was missing in those photos.

You’re probably wondering why it was important for me to find photos in which the Summerhouse was missing, aren’t you? Well, I once read that the Summerhouse was added after the Grand Floridian had opened. Since I never knew whether or not that story was true, I tried to find a website that would corroborate it for me. As hard as I tried, though, I couldn’t find one. Information about the Summerhouse was extremely scarce.

So that is when my quest turned to locating as many old resort photographs as I could find, in particular, photographs that had been taken from the beach area. My fingers furiously pounded away on the computer keyboard, hunting and pecking their way through the Internet.

I soon found the photo that was used on the official WDW website: click here. Again, the Summerhouse wasn’t seen in that photo, and even the patio area looked different, but as I looked at it, my eyes were drawn to the palm trees. The trees in the patio area weren’t quite two-stories tall yet. I don’t know how quickly palm trees grow (and I don’t even know if the palm trees in that photo are still in existence today), but the palm trees in the photo that I had taken during my August of 2005 vacation were definitely much taller: click here. Some of the palm trees in my photo were four-stories tall.

As I continued to look for old resort photos, I found some that were taken from unusual vantage points: click here. And others that showed the old beach area: click here. It was fun for me to reminisce about the resort since my family’s first vacation there was quite a few years ago. I especially liked viewing the beach photographs since I remembered how expansive that beach was.

My quest eventually led me to an interesting webpage: click here. It showed an old photograph of the resort that had been taken from the beach. The photo’s caption mentioned that an old Beach Boys music video had been filmed at that location around the time of the resort’s opening. An old Beach Boys video had been filmed there? Huh?

A quick search of the Internet gave me a link to the Beach Boys’ video for the song “Kokomo:” click here for the music video on VH1, or click here for the music video on MTV. (Note: Commercial will play before music video begins.)

I clicked on the link and the music video began to play on my computer. It wasn’t long before I saw the Grand Floridian come into view. I was floored at the sight of it. Why on earth would the Beach Boys film a music video at the resort? It made no sense to me, especially since the song was about tropical islands. What did that have to do with Walt Disney World?

In the video I noticed that the resort’s windows were dark. That made me wonder when the video had been filmed. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find that answer but it was nowhere to be found. I was eventually forced to make an uneducated guess that the video was probably filmed prior to the resort’s opening on June 28, 1988. That would account for the windows being dark during a nighttime filming session. Plus, since the movie was released on July 29, 1988, and most music videos are released to coincide with the release of their movies, it probably meant that the Beach Boys video had been filmed prior to July 29th. How much prior to that date was anyone’s guess, but it was safe to say at least a couple of weeks. That would potentially put the filming of the music video into the June timeframe when the resort was still closed to the general public. At least that was my guess (and if I ever find the answer, I promise I will post it here).

While I was trying to find the music video’s release date, I discovered some interesting facts. For example, the song “Kokomo” was the Beach Boys biggest-selling hit ever. That surprised me. I would have thought a song from earlier in their career would have been their biggest seller. I also discovered that the song had been featured on the soundtrack for "Cocktail," a Touchstone Pictures movie. Since Touchstone Pictures was a film division of The Walt Disney Company, it suddenly dawned on me why the music video had been filmed in Walt Disney World.

Another surprising thing that I had learned during my research was that the actor John Stamos had actually toured with the Beach Boys in the mid-1980’s. I knew he was a fan of the group, but I didn’t know that he had actually toured with them. Even more surprising was the fact that he had actually appeared in the “Kokomo” music video. He had appeared in the video? What?

I quickly went back and replayed the “Kokomo” music video to see if I could spot John Stamos in it. It wasn’t long before I spied him. He was wearing a pink tank top and white pants as he played the drums. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I never would have believed it.

So, I may not have discovered whether or not Disney was using a Photoshop’ed photo of the Grand Floridian on their website, but I did discover that the Beach Boys (and John Stamos) had filmed a music video on the shores of my favorite resort many moons ago. I couldn’t ask for a better consolation prize. ;)

Wow Janet, you put a lot of thought into that. Even my BF thought that was really cool! Thanks for the info. :yay:

Hi again, fellow GF fans!

Hey, I am making my plans to spend Christmas at the GF :thumbsup2 and was wondering (I saw another thread on the Tpark board that reminded me....) if anybody knows if they do a gingerbread decorating or house building activity for kids during the Xmas season??? I know they were doing something like this last year at the Y & BC early in December as I saw signs posted around that resort. I am thinking I have 2 little girls that would LOVE it if they could do this on our trip. :goodvibes We always make our own gingerbread house, and they love to do that type of thing.

Thanks for any info!

Lives4Disney :)

Channing,

I remember seeing something on Food Network (maybe) about how the WDW resorts get ready for the Holidays. Believe it or not, they start making the Gingerbread in JULY! I remember seeing that they sell small Gingerbread houses at the GF from the gingerbread house in the main lobby. I can't remember if there was a Jr. Chef Gingerbread house activity - but that really sounds like such an awesome idea!

Maybe someone else will have an idea or maybe RPC concierge staff will be able to shed a little light.

Sorry if this didn't answer your question.

Lives4Disney,

I didn't see that last year, although I was not specifically looking for it. However, I think we would have seen it, because we were WAY into the gingerbread house thing!

I have heard that they do this at the YC/BC, and they were the ones selling the small gingerbread houses last year. (The GF kept running out/didn't have them...go figure!)

I can't swear to this, though, so let us know if you find out anything different.

Just an FYI on Christmas Eve, Santa was there taking pictures as were Minnie and Mickey in full Christmas garb. There was a Photopass photographer there that I was chatting with - he was offering to take family pictures in front of the tree or with Minnie and Mickey...he told me that was the only resort they did this in...again, can't swear to it, but that's what he told me!

Scanne - Thanks for the info - Believe it or not I still have had no response from about 2 to 3 weeks ago from emails I sent IPO! I think I will phone them tomorrow and see what's up!!?? I heard they were already baking gingerbread!! Wonder where they put it all!!?? :goodvibes Does it already smell like Xmas at the Grand??! :teeth:

3 for me - Thanks for the Xmas eve info. :goodvibes We always do Chinese food for Xmas eve when we are home, but I wanted to stick near the GF so cancelled that 9 Dragons for Citricos instead - my kids were miffed at me for breaking tradition, but I figured they'd be doing something cute at the GF and didn't want to miss out, LOL. If we see this - OH MAN, my girls would love it!!!

Thanks, guys!

Irisbud, believe it or not, my husband just said, "Hey, Janet, 'Cocktail' is on. Do you want to watch it?"

I laughed out loud when he asked that question considering I had been on a "Cocktail" mission just the other night (in my quest to find the music video that had been shot on the beach of the Grand Floridian).

I didn't really watch the movie since I was busy on the computer, but I did listen when the "Kokomo" song was played. I smiled when I heard it. It's a shame that the movie wasn't prefaced by the music video. I could have used a Grand Floridian fix today. ;)

I’m going to spend the next couple of days catching up as much as I can on the GF FAQ thread. Forgive me if I answer some posts that may have already been answered. I’m trying to read ahead a couple of pages so I minimize that from happening, but when you’re behind 40-something pages, you’re bound to repeat a few answers (hopefully, I’ll put a different spin on things when that happens).

Here goes…

Thanks for the waterslide photos! Can't wait to try it out in January when we are there! Woohoo I am so excited! Thanks!

Lollipop’s Mom, while I was in WDW, I posted a link to a video that I shot while going down the water slide at the Grand Floridian. I can’t remember if I directed that post at you, or even if you saw it, so I am going to post that link again.

I also am going to post a link to some video that my daughter & I shot while going down the water slides at the Polynesian and the Yacht & Beach Club resorts so that you can compare and contrast a few of the water slides. I must admit that the Polynesian's water slide was a little eerie since I had never been down it before and didn’t quite know what to expect. As you will see in the video, it was completely enclosed. Some kids like that closed in feeling, while other kids don’t (my daughter, the thrill seeker, liked it).

Grand Floridian Water Slide
Polynesian Water Slide
Yacht & Beach Club Water Slide

By the way, my daughter shot that last video. I’m not sure what she was saying at the very beginning of it (kids, sheesh!). I also don’t know why that video is so pixelized. Google did something to it during the translation that I haven’t had a chance to figure out yet (drats!).

We had a LOVELY evening for our G 1 cruise. I don't think I outdid MickeyMac on the pics, though. (sorry Janet2K ) I was too busy enjoying the cruise and the company! I took several pics, but nothing as spectacular and thorough as MM's I am sure. My Cinderella cake was beautiful. I do have pics of that, also.

Lives4Disney, I finally read your post with the links to your photos. Thank you so much for sharing them here in the GF FAQ thread. The suite looked gorgeous. Wow! But I had to laugh when I saw the photo of the desk in your room. It reminded me so much of a photo from my own Grand Floridian vacation: click here. I guess photos like that are par for the course in your standard high-tech vacation nowadays, eh? (Laptops & the Internet rule.)

I smiled when I saw the Grand 1 photo of your daughter in the small bedroom. It seems that I, too, have a photo that was taken in that same bedroom aboard the boat: click here. Your photo was a serious photo, while my photo was a silly one. I won’t tell you which Dis’er’s son was in my photo (she sometimes reads the GF FAQ thread so maybe she’ll pipe in), but it seems that the boat's secondary bedroom is a popular one with the kids. By the way, my daughter has a crush on the “pirate” in my photo, so don’t go getting any ideas about your darling daughter meeting him on a future WDW vacation. (Please don’t tell my daughter I said that – she’ll die if she knew I shared that little tidbit of info.) ;)

I also liked the photo of your cake. It looked delicious. Here is a photo of the cake that was served aboard the Grand 1 cruise that I was on: click here. That cake was made by the Grand Floridian Bakery too and it was scrumptious. I ate a huge piece of it and really wish I had taken another piece back to my room at the end of the evening. What a cake. Yum, yum, yummy!

Again, thank you for sharing your vacation photos. I enjoyed viewing them.

During my vacation this summer, my daughter & I attended a Grand 1 cruise with our friends. Food and beverages were served aboard the boat. Here is a photo that shows some of the munchies that we enjoyed: click here. Ice-cold drinks, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, were also served.

The cake that was served was customized by the Grand Floridian Bakery: click here. It turned out beautifully. I can’t remember the size of the cake or how many people it served, but there were ten people aboard the boat and I believe everyone had at least one slice of cake. After we were done eating, I noticed that we had only eaten half of the cake. I’m not sure what size that makes the cake, but it was more than sufficient for a party of our size.

If you viewed the photo of the cake, you’re probably wondering what the decorative touches were made of. Well, the palm trees were made of chocolate and they were highlighted in gold. The pirate’s chest was also made of chocolate and accented with gold. That chest was filled with all sorts of white chocolate seashells, a white chocolate octopus, and even a plastic string of pearls (pirate’s loot, arg!). The pirate’s chest sat atop a bed of sand that was made of light-brown, granulated sugar. There were also a few white chocolate seashells scattered about the cake.

As to the “sign” that was sitting inside the pirate’s chest, I ~believe~ the Bakery took the “Lizority Princesses” sign and printed it on a piece of white chocolate (don’t quote me on that, though). That unique touch was arranged ahead of time by one of my Lizority sisters as a special surprise to the rest of the Lizority. I don’t know how she pulled it off, but she did. The Grand Floridian Bakery did an incredible job with everything. Not only did the cake look wonderful, it tasted wonderful too.

Since you’re probably wondering about that “Lizority Princesses” sign, I should mention that it was created by a Lizority sister in honor of this summer’s group vacation. The slogan on that sign stated the following: “Lizority Princesses: Committed to Keeping Life Wild.” My Lizority sister had shirts custom-made with that slogan printed on them: click here. Those shirts were handed out during our cruise. Between the shirts and the cake, everyone was taken by surprise. It really was a fun & unique touch that made our cruise aboard the Grand 1 even more memorable than it already was.

…does the Grand Floridian have refrigerators in every room? What size are they?

I know this question has been answered before, but I thought I would give an update at least as far as the main building is concerned. There was no spare refrigerator in my resort room, only the minibar and it came stocked with drinks and munchies for purchase: click here and click here.

I hope that helped.
