The basic answer to your question is that you dont know what is safe and what is not safe. When you click on a hypertext link, you do so at your own risk. However, if you have an up-to-date Operating System, a decent firewall, some decent virus protection software, anti-phishing software, a pop-up ad blocker, and a few other items that are presently escaping my memory, you minimize your risk.
