The Naughty Nuts Redux: Cocktails, Suntan Oil & Barbs!

Hi, Nutjobs! I'm back from Boston. Did anyone miss me?

Did anyone even notice that I was gone?

The trip was awesome and I do have a report...it was only a day and a half...

And pictures, well, they're in an album on the Kodak Gallery. I can't post them all here...

Hello, freaks. I'm back!!!! Didya miss me? Huh? HUH? DIDYA???? The trip was wonderful. I'll have to post some pictures when I get them uploaded. We spent 4 nights at the beach during which I rarely got out of the ocean. The water was so beautiful. Then, we spent 4 nights at Disney and did the Pirate and Princess Party. We had so much fun. I wish I could do it all again. I'm a little mopey today and sad to see all my friends go back to Cincinnati. I hopefully start back at Chef Mickey's tomorrow night, so that'll be good.

How is everyone doing? Liz...tell us about your trip!! :yay:

Okay, I don't think many other people are going to show up, so I'll post anyway...annoying as it may be...

Friday, June 6. Allison had bragged that she was a morning person and would be up early. HAH. Guess who was up at 7:30 a.m. and finally knocked on her door at 7:53 to see if she was up yet? Luckily, she was quick about getting dressed and ready to go, so we weren’t behind. My mother dropped us off at the bus station in Springfield , which was…um, interesting. The bathroom made my skin crawl; Allison felt the same way. Lots of graffiti with the “hoes” calling each other out. Not to mention the dirt. But we survived…and it was off to Boston . On the short cab ride from the station to the hotel, I was warned to not tell anyone that I was from the Hartford area, due to the uproar over the man who’d been run over and laid there for a minute and a half with no one calling for help. So…we stayed at the Doubletree on Washington Street and we were very pleased. At check-in, not only did we get our room keys, but a delicious warm walnut chocolate chip cookie! And it was the quickest check-in I’d ever experienced. Within 5 minutes, we were in our room.

We didn’t stay long, though. A change of shoes and we were off to walk the Freedom Trail. Very easy to follow; it was either a brick line in the sidewalk, or painted red line on the street. We picked it up in Boston Common, which was just up the street from our hotel. We missed the monument to the Boston Massacre, however, but we stopped the next day. Our actual first stop was the Granary Burying Ground, burial place of Peter Faneuil, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, the parents of Benjamin Franklin, and the victims of the Boston Massacre. It was a beautiful cemetery and I was in my element! The “artwork” on the stones themselves was so different; lots of skulls/skeletons and cherubs. Also several obelisks and “table” stones. We next walked over to the King’s Chapel and Burying Ground. It was very much like the Granary Burying Ground, but much smaller. Since this was a “dead end,” (ha ha), we then backtracked to the Old City Hall and the statue of Benjamin Franklin, the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House (where, as the sign indicates, the first public Boston reading of the Declaration of Independence took place on July 18, 1776, from the south balcony). The next stop was Faneuil Hall, and since we were getting hungry, it was only fitting that we stopped for drinks and nachos at the Hard Rock Café. Somehow, the host knew to seat us under the Aerosmith wall! This wall featured one of Steven Tyler’s stage outfits – which is surprisingly tiny – Brad Whitford’s guitar, Tom Hamilton’s Plasmatics t-shirt, one of Joey Kramer’s drums, and God – er, Joe Perry’s guitar.

After getting a nice buzz going with a delicious Hurricane (in a souvenir glass, ‘natch), I bought a t-shirt and returned to Faneuil Hall for 2 more t-shirts. Then it was through the Quincy Market and back to the Freedom Trail. By now, it was close to 5 p.m., so most attractions were closed; however, we did manage to get through the Paul Revere House. Very tiny; only a kitchen, a “dining room,” and 2 upstairs bedrooms, but still lovely. Then we proceeded through the Paul Revere Mall, stopping to make a wish in the St. Francis of Assisi Garden , and going around the Old North Church .

Next we crossed the Charles River to see the USS Constitution, aka “Old Ironsides.” However, we couldn’t get too close, as there was some sort of ceremony going on. Lots of sailors – yum! By this time, our endurance was flagging and we were hungry, although our feet were thankfully unblistered. We cabbed it back to the hotel for a short rest, then we walked down the street to Legal Seafood for the best crab cakes and “champagne kiss” ever!

Saturday, June 7. Slept in a bit later than we’d planned, but it was okay. A quick stop at Dunkin Donuts for a latte turned into a nice phone call with Allison’s father, my uncle Whitey. It was good to talk to him; it’s been a while. Then we went across the street to Boston Common and underground to the subway, the T. We decided that with all the trips back and forth that we’d planned for the day, a one-day pass was a good deal. Our first stop was Harvard University . Although the weather was pleasant before we got on the T, the heat and humidity were skyrocketing now. However, it was still nice enough to go in and walk around the campus. I was a bit surprised to find out that it was smaller than I’d expected. And the graduation tents were still set up. Our first stop while here was the University bookstore, then another store where Alli found what she wanted, a Harvard polo shirt for Uncle Whitey for Father’s Day.

Approaching lunchtime, we headed back to the T and Kendall Square/MIT. Our first real adventure was trying to find the Cambridge Brewing Co., where we’d planned to have lunch. We could NOT find it! We did find MIT purely by accident, however. But our hunger/thirst/sweat won out, and we began asking directions. Even the locals, in giving us directions, proved that they had no idea where it was either. Since nasty blisters were starting to form on our feet, we tried to find a cab. The first 3 said no, they had no idea or never heard of the place. Finally, the fourth cabbie took pity on us and drove us there. He said the other three declined because they wanted longer rides/longer fares. Well…our driver earned himself a 75% tip! At the restaurant, it was good to sit in the cool air and enjoy a Cuban sandwich and the sampler of 4 house beers.

Recharged – with lots of moleskin applied to our fresh blisters – we went back to the T station (which was quite close!) and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. To get from the station to the museum, there was a free shuttle bus, of which Alli was skeptical. No worries – we made it without incident! This was the first time either of us had visited a presidential library and we found it beautiful. It is located right on Boston Harbor and was designed by the architect I.M. Pei. I especially enjoyed how one section was a recreation of a White House corridor, with the red carpet and chandeliers. The most moving exhibit was probably the “emptiest one.” Entering a dark hallway marked “November 22, 1963,” there is nothing there but five or six TV screens set at varying levels down the hall, all playing the same breaking news broadcast, by Walter Cronkite, of the president’s assassination. Really, there was nothing else needed in that exhibit. At the very end, it was quite impressive to see an entire section of the Berlin Wall placed in a corner, complete with bullet holes and graffiti. After leaving the building, we had a few minutes before the return bus, so we went down to the water for more pictures, and saw the first of four weddings that afternoon!

So…back to the bus, back to the T, and back to our hotel for a rest. While walking through Boston Common, I had an unbearable craving for something cold and non-alcoholic. That streetcorner watermelon slushie was the best thing I’d ever had and I still wish I’d bought a large one! While resting in our hotel room, we decided we didn’t want a lot for dinner, as the Cambridge Brewing Co. had filled us up, but we were still a bit hungry. A consultation of the AAA tour book showed us that the Cheers on Beacon Street was very close, and just across from the Public Garden , which we still had yet to explore. So Cheers it was. This is the inspiration for the TV show, the former Bull and Finch Pub, now renamed (the exterior is the one shown on TV). Since we were headed that way, we detoured through the Public Garden , where we saw weddings 2 and 3. Then across to Cheers, passing Bride #4 and her entourage. I was nice; I congratulated her instead of offering my condolences, as I typically do. Anyway, the entrance to the bar is exactly what you’d imagine; downstairs and through 2 doors. We expected to be greeted with a cry of “Norm!” as we entered, but unfortunately…

Anyway, since we wanted food, we were directed upstairs (which is the Hampshire House, and not Melville’s). Our waiter was very nice and very cute; he looked exactly like Anthony from the movie Sweeney Todd (with a goatee). I wasn’t planning to have yet another drink and I first settled for “Rebecca’s Ruby Red” (with the obligatory souvenir glass), but then I noticed a “Wachusett Blueberry Ale,” brewed in Westminster . Sounded quite odd, but interesting, and it proved to be quite delicious! After dinner, we walked back through the Public Garden , then returned to Beacon Street . We were both quite taken with the homes on this street, but after a while, I was hot, sweaty, and achy. Nobody told me it was uphill! My feet and knees did not want to cooperate at this point, but obviously I made it. And I was able to take a short detour back to the Granary Burying Ground. Although it was closed, I tried taking some photos from the street, in the hope of catching “something odd.” The photos came out too dark, though, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Not even an orb.

So we returned to the hotel for a shower and to crash for the night! We had to get up early Sunday morning, to return to CT.

Liz,
Sounds like a good time, it made me realize that there are so many places in my own country that I haven't seen yet.

Sorceress and I used to want to live in Boston...maybe some day

by the architect I.M. Pei
Ok I don't know why but this name made me laugh, I goggled it to check him out.

Thanks for the pictures they were great, I liked all the tombstones, cemeteries sure have changed over the decades.

Thanks for the trippie, sorry you missed out on the Orbs :scared1:

Well, at least you could see that I didn't make up that name! :p Glad you liked the pictures - I love that camera; I was actually standing very far away to get the close-ups of the statues. The zoom is phenomenal on it.

We've already decided that I'm supposed to go to Chicago next summer, then she and I want to go to Philly. We also talked a little about New Orleans.

Liz! Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed reading about your trip! :) Do you have my email address? I need pictures! I'm glad you and Allie had a nice time.

Goofster...all I've got for you is an eye roll.

I'm gonna have to wreak some havoc around here. It's too quiet.

My very, very lazy trip report.

First we went to the beach
n28701461_31256558_7888.jpg

Then, Ben broke my boogie board and I tried to kill him. I failed miserably.
n28701461_31256578_3714.jpg

I convinced Ben to put cucumbers on his eyes because they were hurting him. Then he fell asleep and I made Eren go sit by him in her pink princess skirt and I photographed it. Then Ben woke up and tried to kill me. He also failed miserably.

I don't know what's come over me to make me willing to post pictures of myself in a swimsuit. Just look at the other people.

A good time was had by all.

At night, we went out to dinner.

Some days we went to the pool instead of the beach.

One day we woke up and it was time to leave. But only because we were going to Disney World, so we weren't sad....

We drove from the beach to Disney World. As soon as we got there it was time to get dressed for the Pirate and Princess Party!!!!

3 of us went as pirates:

Once again, a good time was had by all.

One day, at MGM (NOT Hollywood Studios), we got to try the new Toy Story ride. However, just as we were getting ready to get on it, it broke. We were all escorted off the ride. We came back later and got to use the fastpass line. I really liked this ride!!! Even the queue is adorable. Everyone needs to ride it.

n28701461_31256686_5478.jpg

We of course ran into some familiar characters.

I even rode the carousel for the first time ever in all my trips to Disney. Imagine that.

Don't ask me why, but I must see these guys every time I go to AK. They wow me.

Once again, one morning we woke up and it was time to go home. Except I didn't have to go home because I live/work here. So, all my friends went home. I was sad to see everyone go, but we had a great trip! The end.
