The movie "UP"

My DS will be 5 in March and this weekend he was sick, ran a fever, and just wanted to lay around watching tv. I think we watched UP! 10 times!! It's his favorite movie right now!

We just watched it last night and as a woman who is currently TTC w/out much luck , :sad2: I must admit I was hit hard in the first 15 minutes. I did cry for most of the movie, prompting DH to ask "Is this you or the hormones crying?";) (I get misty but I'm not a cry cryer, KWIM?)

I took it from a different perspective however. My perspective was that it was a love story of sorts. Boy falls in love with girl, they grow up and get married, she is the spark that he needed in his life, they find out that there would be no babies and they are heartbroken, but then he gives her back her "Adventure Book" to remind her that their adventure is not over! :lovestruc It has taken a detour!":goodvibes They have a wonderful long life together, she passes, he wants to fufill her dream because by love it has become his too!

Another parallel is that everyone seems lost but they eventually find someone/somewhere / some heart to call home. Russel finds Carl; Carl finds Russel; Doug finds Carl; Kevin finds Russel together Russel and Carl help Kevin.

The end, although I have to tell you that I was crying so hard I thought my contacts were sure to flow out of my eyes:scared1: Carl's wife gives him the same gift her gave her so many years befor, it was greatest gift of all by showing him how he added to her life. . . her adventure, no regrets.

So you see, it's all about perspective. That's mine for now. . . It may change and I have no need to watch it again anytime soon to be honest;) but again it's just my opinion.

That is the same way I felt about the movie!! It's a wonderful life lesson for all of us -- life doesn't always go as planned and you need to get on with it and live anyway.

My kids saw the movie too and they really enjoyed it, but didn't get all the same things fro it that we did. Wonderful movie!!

DH and I loved UP.:thumbsup2
DH who is 66 said its the best Disney movie he has ever seen.:)

I don't think it was too intense at all. The infertility and death thing was vague enough that a young kid isn't going to get it. Look at Wall-E. How many young children really understood the message about waste and laziness? Adults, teens, and children will all have a very different experience based on their level of maturity. That is part of what made both of those films so great.

This weekend I think I can go for it. My friends told me that its a saddest movie. I will put my view here about this movie on mondy.

I agree - missed the very beginning - but dh filled me in & said how deep it was....my kids were actually scared of it - the dog chasing scenes were too much - they spent their time in our laps.

I think the animation was nice - but that's the only positive thing I can say. Wish I had seen it early so I could have told everyone I know how disappointing it was - but we just saw it over Christmas break.

I sobbed during at least 3 parts of this movie. In the end, I realized I wasn't crying for sadness. Instead, this movie truly made me appreciate just how "adventurous" and wonderful my life turned out to be. Honestly, I now appreciate the quiet times at home with my family more. I remember after seeing this movie last spring, I sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee watching my kids play outside through the window and thinking that nobody has a better life than I do. I've talked with several adults who have had the same experience. This movie is really something special.:goodvibes

It is a movie that adults would definitely enjoy. It was interesting to me that they made the Chinese boy fat. It's fits in with how overweight our youth are.

I loved this movie. It is one of my favorites ever. The scene where he gets paint on the mailbox and then she does the same to make him feel better....I just love it!
And I must say when I got a pic with Carl at HS last year i was thrilled! I love UP!

My kids received UP for a Christmas present and we just watched it Sunday. My children are 9,9,7,7,7 and 6. It was one of the best movies ever! All of my kids loved it. I will admit, it was nothing like we thought it would be.

It had great teaching moments in it and since Sunday we have talked about it daily! It was so full of life experiences and really made me think about my life. It has made me think deep about what is important to me and how I want to live. (I don't want to list any specifics as I don't want to ruin it for anyone else who may not have seen it yet.)

For my kids, it was been wonderful to teach them the same exact things just on a different level. I believe movies like this open the door to expose them about what is to come on a kid level. I am very surprised that people think it isn't a kids movie! As much as I would love to keep my kids in a bubble and protect them from the real world, I believe it is important to expose them, and give them the tools they will need to survive out here.

I watched "Up" for the first time this last weekend and I think it's one of the saddest movies I've ever seen.

Sad, but incredibly touching! The little note she wrote him in their adventure book was so sweet.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.:thumbsup2

I just watched the movie UP this weekend. Did anyone else find the content to be way too mature for the audience that advertising targeted? I mean the whole "infertility, aging, death, living with regrets, your childhood idol trying to kill you" thing seemed awfully heavy for kids. I cried 3 different times, during it.
Not saying it was a bad movie but certainly it was not what I expected.

I did not care for the storyline to begin with. I wish they would have left out the bad guy all together or reworked it.

I thought it was lazy writing to be honest. It felt like 2 different stories to me.

Plus the end, not explaing the child's situation was odd.

I don't consider most recent Pixar movies to be "childrens" movies. They are human movies, targeted at all ages.

I agree.

While dh and I were a little choked up, the kids didn't understand most of it. They got the general sadness tone to some things but they weren't upset at all.

I thought UP was a great love story

Though my kids liked it and if they want to watch it again, I have the choice not to. ;)

DH and I watched UP when in N.C. this past week-end while visiting our family. Our grands have seen this movie several times and love it... well most of it! :goodvibes

Having almost lost my dear DH this summer, I could truly relate :sad1:. Watching this couple age happily together for 70 yrs truly pulled at our heart strings and had us all crying. Carl was so alone w/o purpose once his beloved Ellie passed, so we loved the fact he decided to carry out her dream. Also wonderful was the interaction with the lil Boy Scout, Russell, who helped rejuvinate his spirit, as they never had children of their own. It was priceless at the end, when he learns in Ellie's journal, her best adventure was actually all the years shared with him! :lovestruc

This movie is a great reality check and really hits home about what's important in life on our earthly journey. :)
Yes, there were mature parts for younger kids, some situations could've been left out, but thankfully, overall our grands only took the good lessons from this movie! :goodvibes

It's rated PG. Seems appropriately rated to me. Did you think it warranted a stricter rating? PG-13? R?

Or were you (naively) assuming that since it was Disney and/or animated that it is for "kids"?

I never questioned the rating. I said the content was heavy and that it was not what I expected. I asked for opinions not personal attacks.

Have a nice day!

I watched Up on the outward bound Virgin flight to Orlando last October and I must admit that the first few minutes when the man's life was portrayed including the infertility and then the death had me absolutely gobsmacked and in shock- I couldn't believe it - but after that I admit I did enjoy the film. I thought this part was a bit too heavy for children though.

Mind you on the way back I watched Marley and Me and was completely traumatized!
