The Mouse-KIDS are in charge...a Jan '12 PTR NEW 2/5 TR link & new tickers

Hmmm... I have a hard time keeping up with these challenges but I'll try!

I think I'd have to say my new favorite is Pecos Bills! I love the taco salad! :thumbsup2

The trip to get Bekah from camp looked like a lot of fun! What a great time to spend with Rachel and your dad!

So many great choices in MK, but I think I have to go with Sleepy Hollow Refreshments in Liberty Square. Our family tradition is to get Root Beer Floats here on our way into the MK....where else is it acceptable to have root beer floats for breakfast? Gotta love Disney! :thumbsup2

“Is this guten fee?”

Copyof100_7641.jpg

Is the question my young DD Naomi-Ruth has come to learn to ask when she takes a snack or treat or sees some food item one of her siblings is eating…

Naomi-Ruth has not been officially diagnosed w/ any food allergies or has celiac disease…but as a 3 day old infant, her Mama (me) knew her tummy wasn’t happy and that made for an unhappy baby and a very unhappy Mama…

fast forward to her first birthday and the trials continued…why is she sick all the time, why does she have the most irregular bowels, and why does she have this horrible eczema…talks w/ her Ped, talks w/ friends, and visits to other doctors really brought us no firm conclusions…for the next 18 months or so, cow’s milk was eliminated and then all cow’s dairy and then slowly more wheat based products and then egg products and finally all gluten and wheat…oh she doesn’t eat peanut products either…

After some serious esophageal tasting and genetic and lactose testing’s…we came to the conclusions her small body just simply cannot break down the various enzymes found in these foods and although she isn’t celiac she possesses a high strain in her DNA.

She is now 4 ½ yrs old and she is stable…a stable not worth messing w/ despite some food challenge recommendations. She has one more year before starting Kindergarten, we’ll discuss again then…

So last yr’s WDW trip was our first attempt of a complete gluten/wheat, dairy and egg free dining for her (previous trips we didn’t realize the severity of her needs and she could get by w/ food brought from home easily)…I did my research and made charts up the wha-zoo but in the end I chickened out..it seemed to daunting of a task to figure out the in’s and out’s of this kind of dining especially in the Quick Service world…TS places no worries…the chef’s at Disney are amazing!

At home we rarely eat out and take out she hardly partakes in…McD’s she gets a handful of fries and Rachel’s happy meal toy. I buy all her food at specialty nutrition stores and copy/mimic as much as I can to what we and my other children eat. My Mother even stocks special items in her home when she is over. Going anywhere when food is required is a challenge…I am thankful beyond words her intolerances are not life threatening but it still saddens the heart of her father and I when birthday cupcakes or Halloween party goodies are passed out that she can’t have…even a few days a go my SIL came over to bake cookies w/ Rachel…NR will not even be able to play w/ the dough. It doesn’t seem to bother her (for the most part so I am grateful for that).

So where does this lead me…why tell this story and give this back info…well I have to let go of my fears and this overwhelming sense of this is too hard…cause this sweet girl deserves to eat her Mickey head bar like the rest of us right? ;)

The upcoming trip to Disney we’ll need to face the challenge head on and her own sunbutter and gluten free bread sandwiches brought from home aren’t going to cut it for each meal…

I have revisited my charts and made new ones have looked over Dis reports and Blogs…here are a few:

glutenfreedairyfreeWDW: blog

Gluten you won’t stop me from eating at Disney: disboards

guest experiences from allears

glutenanddiaryfree: another WDW blog\

There’s a ton more out there too…

So I am arming myself w/ knowledge and gusto to order her food she can eat like her older siblings and figure this whole thing out…

Are you ready?

Here are a few pictures from her happy dining moments last year:

100_7131.jpg

Birthday cupcakes from babycakes in DTD…to a regular wheat/milk/egg eating cake person these were blah but to my daughter they were heavenly!

100_7206.jpg

Chocolate tofutti “ice cream” w/ special toppings she can eat at CRT! Thanks Chef you made her day!

An awesome fruit cup from Tutto Italia

Her own creation of grapes dipped in grape jelly at Chef Mickey’s LOL

A simple snack!

100_8117.jpg

And her gluten free brownie treat (we got at Disney) to eat at the airport!

I put together this list of items (w/ pictures on the reverse side) based on where we planned to dine last yr:

What she did try last yr were:

the allergy free tenderloins…she did ok w/ these, but she generally eats “naked” nuggets

Root beer float w/ DF ice cream, she didn’t like I think she didn’t like the root beer much.

The GF brownies were an obvious hit

And she also had some GF pasta, rice rolls and bread and various TS places.

So what is the plan for January’s trip?

I have the list of the QS places we are planning to eat at and I have a coordinated list of what I believe she can eat there and what we’ll attempt to order.

Day1)

B-food from home and juice in airport

L- MK-Casey’s Corner: hot dog GF bun? Going to attempt ordering no bun, she normally doesn’t eat buns anyways. Share some fries and the appleslaw? Unsure ingredients…wonder if they have apple slices plain we could get.

D-in villa pasta brought from home

S- MK raspberry slushie drink or fro lemonade

Day 2)

B-O’Hana will order her some GF Mickey waffles, fruit and bacon

L- have a back up sunbutter sandwich and we are doing snacks so can get her some popcorn

D- unsure yet…GF pizza from Pizza Planet or ?? have back-up plan something from villa

S- rice krispie treat or a GF brownie

Day 3)

B-in villa (will be bringing cereal from home and ordering some GF waffles from garden grocer)

L- FTBBQ going to attempt ordering a hot dog w/ no bun and kid meal sides

D- EOS going to attempt ordering her soup and jello

S- from Goofy’s candy Company a bag of candy

Day 4)

B- in villa

L- in villa

D- share some corn chips in Mexico and right now bring something from villa
but would like to order something??

S- try to find the new version of Izakadoodle pop or other fruit treat

Day 5)

B- in villa

L- we are eating at PVH, but I am thinking of ordering her some allergy free chicken tenders from CHH and I can get an ear of corn from the Liberty Sq. market

D- in airport, have a sunbutter sandwich ready

So it’s not all Disney food but at least 5-6 attempts at ordering something for her…good test run before another longer trip planned in the summer of 2013…

I will do some more reading and researching too in the months to come, plus when Matt and I are down in Oct…we are going to ask some questions…

Thanks for reading, J~

I don't remember if we talked about this before but Dole Whips are diary free. Both the pineapple and the orange. And there is a chance that the vanilla is diary free as well but you'd have to see the ingredient list there to be sure.

As you know, I'm traveling with a friend in November who eats GF. Big difference from NR because my friend will/can eat salad at the CS places and she can just take off the bun from burgers and such. If we comes across anything *new* I'll let you know.

I think I read that babycakes nyc will deliver cakes to TS restaurants as a special order. Did you see that?

Trying to brainstorm ideas for NR...

Could she eat the (adult) Grilled Chicken sandwich from Cosmic Rays without the bun? That would be a good meal with the apple slices.

Wow - that brings back memories from the two trips with did with Alex on a gluten/casein/nut free diet! It's not easy, but Disney does a FANTASTIC job of trying to make it as normal an experience as possible.

Our "special guest" for our April trip has an allergy to dairy so we'll have to revisit the whole dealing with allergies at WDW thing between now & then. She's taking a trip with her family in a few weeks so I'm sure they'll have some info to pass along to me but I may have to borrow some of your lists. Things have changed a lot since our 2007 trip (the last one we went on with Alex's dietary restrictions).

Looks like you've done a lot of research. From all I've read WDW does a great job with food allergies/intolerances. They definitely seem to be the best at those accomodations.

I think you have probably read her report but sleepingbean has a TR for her gluten free/dairy free trip and a list of what they ate. Here's a link in case you haven't seen it:http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1512938

Very interesting read. My mother is currently in testing for celiac and was concerned about eating at WDW. I assured her before that it's perfectly do-able, and you just added to my conviction! I'll have to copy your list to show her.

Wow, your research is very impressive! A bunch of the ice cream places around the parks and resorts now have dairy-free options (tofutti and rice dream), if that helps too! It sounds like you have a great plan in the works! :goodvibes

Hi I'm joining in from lurkerdom! Looks like your kids are planning a great trip. It is amazing how much work you have to put into just planning Naomi-Ruth's meals. With my niece I just need to make sure she drinks enough water. Much kudos to you!

Heck, I just want to know the carbs for DD's insulin calculations. Those don't seem to exist. Sometimes she complains of a stomach ache and the Endo has mentioned celiac but it's not all the time and seems to come around during high stress moments. I pray all the time we don't have to deal with that in addition but they test diabetics (at least type 1) every two years for celiac since the occurrence seems to be higher. Good luck and I hope NR eats lots of yummy things.

Definitely challenging, but it seems you are armed with good information. If anyone can do this, you can! :goodvibes

Love your 30-Day Challenge! I am definitely a Pecos Bill's kind of gal! :goodvibes

You are amazing with all of your research for Naomi Ruth! I bet she can't wait to have more of those GF brownies! :thumbsup2

I can't remember either  she's not a huge pineapple or orange fan...but this is on our treat list, so we can certaintly have her taste one of ours :thumbsup2 thanks for the ingredient list

thanks :thumbsup2 I'll be paying a ttention a bit too have some notes written down to ask at various places too! yes her habits are as flexible as an adult so it still seems tricky for the under 10 crowd whether ordering adult or child meals...

I think I read that babycakes nyc will deliver cakes to TS restaurants as a special order. Did you see that?

no I didn't know that...def worth remembering I know we'll be back down over a T-giving/birthday break again :thumbsup2

Trying to brainstorm ideas for NR...

Could she eat the (adult) Grilled Chicken sandwich from Cosmic Rays without the bun? That would be a good meal with the apple slices.

it's possible she eat some of that chicken, good suggestion :goodvibes nathan doesn't like eating there because of the noise...but we could do a run in order...

Yes the stuff is there, you just need to learn the "system" I feel especially for quick service meals, which is mostly what this trip will be...

it probably has and I don't think the allergy info you can have sent to you is always spot on w/ menu changes... plus you don't truly know what they have available at each place since it's not on the normal menu boards :headache:

Looks like you've done a lot of research. From all I've read WDW does a great job with food allergies/intolerances. They definitely seem to be the best at those accomodations.

we haven't traveled much outside of this for her...so I would agree ;)

I believe I have seen some of her info before, but I'll re scan, thanks!

hey glad to help...that is why the DIS is so great who knows what tip or thing you'll read that will help your trip :thumbsup2

thanks SB! I am hoping to feel more confident and be able to order her stuff easily!

:welcome: thanks for coming out of lurkdom! the base of the trip seems real good, be fun when we start planning the park days w/ rides and stuff :thumbsup2 and thank you...it does take a lot of work and thinking ahead to manage food issues, but luckily Disney makes that easy to do!

you never know maybe someone is figuring out that same thing...keep looking :thumbsup2 and yes I hope you don't have to manage that on top of her diabeties

Definitely challenging, but it seems you are armed with good information. If anyone can do this, you can! :goodvibes

aww thanks Missy

some good eatin there :thumbsup2

aww thanks! it's an accumulation of work...I think so too :cutie:

The Mouse Kids WDW Challenge:

2. What is your Favorite restaurant TS or QS in the Animal Kingdom?

Nathan says:

FTBBQ

100_1577.jpg

“ because I like good fruit”

Now you tell us, what is your favorite…

Nathan has good taste. FTBBQ is ours too. We aren't eating there this time though. :scared1: With the DxDP we just wanted to try lots of TS places we had never eaten at before so we opted for the Yak & Yeti.

I haven't eaten in many places in AK but I will pick Yak N' Yeti. The Kobe Beef Burger was so yummy and the wonton dessert out of this world!! :rotfl2:

Definitely Flame Tree BBQ for most of us too! :thumbsup2

Although Tim really enjoyed his CS Yak & Yeti in March.
