I did a little "research" in my German language class. I asked the ladies (range in ages from 24-65) which personalities they know of (NOT like--again that is not the same as fame) and/or could recognize a photo of and also if they felt most people in their home countries could do the same. The ladies in my class come Turkey, Poland, Brazil, Vietnam and Pakistan (and I come from the USA).
EVERYONE knew who MJ was (and did before his death) and said they could recognize photos of him from many eras and so could most people in their home countries.
Ditto to the above for Obama and Madonna (well, recognize photos of both--not from different eras for Obama).
Everyone knew the names for Bin Laden and also David Beckham did not know think they would recignize a photo and felt the same would be true for most of their counrtymen.
No one knew who Annie Lennox was (I do but I think lots of Americans do not) or Mahamed Ali.
All knew of the Pope as an office but only one knew his current name. The Polish and Braziallian ladies felt many people in their countries would recognize his name or likeness. The others felt no one would really know him in their homelands.
Only the Polish and Vietnamese women knew who Angelina Jolie was. Both said most people under 35 would know her and few people older.
I forgot to ask about Elvis
