Always enjoying watching Masters tournament. Feel like it marks the official start of Spring each year. Wish golf tournaments had fewer announcers who think they have to constantly talk. Seems like they try too hard to say something memorable when the real reason we watch is for the golf.

Yea, I don't get that nonsense about insisting the announcers refer to the gallery/spectators as 'patrons'. Seems rather stodgy if you ask me. Not aware of any other pro golf tournament that insists on using that term...................LOL.

They don’t call it “a tradition unlike any other” for nothing… in fact I hear the concessions are super cheap unlike other similar events.

If you watch it on line at Masters.com on Thursday and Friday it is with no commentators. I quickly found out that without them it resembles watching grass grow. I do agree they sometimes overdo it but for the most part it is much easier to follow and identify the players.

I had the opportunity to work there as an outside contractor helping to direct the staff and patron shuttle buses and had an all inclusive pass for anyplace on the site. What they lose in food concessions they more than make up for in souvenirs. That was in 2014 (Bubba won) and I have to admit to being impressed with the whole organization of that tournament, but you had to watch everything you might say, not only to the staff and patrons, but they were even able to monitor your phone and e-mail accounts so that you didn't reveal any of the "secrets" to family at home. As if I had any access to the secrets. The biggest thing I did notice was that the shade of green in the grass is different than any other grass I have ever seen and it consists of far more unlevel grounds than it appears on TV. No wonder Tiger can't walk it any more. It is very steep in places.

I do like watching the coverage on the Masters website, starts long before the TV coverage and is free to watch unlike some other sporting events. You can watch everyone play selected holes or follow featured pairings. You can decide to include/exclude the commentary (button at upper/lower right) or on TV you can simply put the sound on mute. The displayed graphics includes all you need to know about what shot it is or how far he is from the green. To me those attending a golf tournament (and have attended many different ones over the years) will always be fans/gallery. I don't see anything 'wrong' with those terms. It is funny at times how they try to attract more viewers, I would imagine younger viewers would ask their parents "what's a patron?"........LOL. Tickets to the Masters is one of hardest events to attend so you are less likely to get those who know nothing about golf and show up to drink beer and yell stupid things like you see at some tournaments which is a good thing.

Rooting for Bryson, I like a golfer who likes the fans and shows emotion. Just look at yesterday and compare when Rory came off the 18th and then when Bryson did. Rory didn't even acknowledge the fans, while Bryson was giving them high 5's.

It’s true- Rory will walk right past all the fans after a round, where most players stop and sign a few autographs and interact with fans. I think it’s part of the reason Phil Mickelson is so popular. He’ll hang around for 10-15 minutes sometimes.

I want to root for Rory because the career Grand Slam is special and he is a well deserving competitor. But, I see why fans aren’t behind him.

Just turned it on to watch the last nine holes. Not sure what fans you are referring to that aren’t behind him, the ones at the Masters certainly are cheering him on.

For me it's between Rory and Rose. There are others hovering around first place, but these are the two players that have entertained me the most.

I am sure everyone has their favorites as it relates to pro golfers just like any other athletes. To attend the Masters in person is one of the hardest tickets to get, so you tend to have fans who are very knowledgeable/appreciative of all of those participating. Golfers often want to sign their scorecard at the end of the round and then return to sign autographs. Many tournaments have designated areas for younger fans to gather and wait for autographs and often those are located near the practice putting green before the start of their round. I think many golfers are less likely to sign autographs for adults who likely are just looking to make a fast buck selling those items on Ebay. Typically, they are interested in the younger fans seeking autographs.

In watching the broadcast, I felt like the crowds were excited about all of the good shots being made and couldn't notice any sort of preference as some others mentioned. I do think Bryson at times comes across as being more interested in building his 'brand' and being a social media star vs being a top flight golfer, but to each their own and apparently that appeals to some. I think Phil used to be more popular in the past, but over the years has gotten good at saying what he thinks the media wants to hear regardless of whether or not it is true. He often comes across as the smartest person in the room which some people dislike.

During a round, I don't fault any golfer who wants to stay in the moment and isn't looking to 'fist bump' fans while walking to the next tee. I honestly don't get why so many fans seem to want to do that. I honestly have no idea how to gauge/compare the popularity of various golfers just based on which group seems to cheer the loudest.
