Ours was split into houses also.
Hepburn, Roberts, Wallis and Parker house (yellow, red, green and blue)
each house had a skill that kids were matched with. I was a long distance runner so in sporty hepburn.
Roberts was maths based, wallis was science and Parker was art.

Perhaps it is an American thing. Our college and professional teams have them too. We were the Pandas, but I went to an all girls school so having a cute animal was ok. Our University of California Santa Cruz's is a slug - but you expect something non-traditional from them.

I've been hearing some rather interesting mascots but a slug is new! I think that beats my Hat!

Jeez, I'd've been out of luck there! I was terrible at science and math, and couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler. Was there a house for shy, geeky awkward kids who read a lot?

It seems to be a US thing Sarah. Our HS was split into houses that competed with each other, I was in Scott (of the Antarctic), there was also Hillary (Sir Edmund) but I don't remember the other 2 but I am sure they were named after famous explorers. I think I did well to remember 2 out of 4, its 30 years ago I left.

We had houses ... can't remember what they were though. I tried to avoid anything to do with sports so that's probably why.

Wow. Learn something new every day. What do they call the sports teams that play at the schools? Like the school basketball team.

They were just named after the school ... so the teams would be Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan Rugby Team / Netball Team / Rounders Team / Football Team etc

All the other schools in the area had similar teams and they all played against each other.

My HS mascot was the falcon. Unfortunately, my university mascot was Willie the Wave. Not very intimidating. Awesome school, horrible branding haha.

I was here yesterday, but I have no idea what happened. I guess ignorance is bliss!

i was thinking that too liesbeth, surely if DCL broke it you could claim? I know you normally can with airlines so assume cruises would do the same thing
I think the liability for bags is about $50 but you should check your DCL insurance policy if you took out the insurance. I always take out high insurance on my bags as to replace just the bags, not including the clothes is pretty high.

Feeling nostalgic as I just received an invite to my 10 year High School Reunion. Here is another "Get to Know You" question :-)

What was your HS mascot?

My high school mascot was the Pirates. As an aside, my youngest DD Samantha attended her 10 year high school reunion on May 18, 2013, the day we sailed on the EBTA. Her school Crystal Springs Uplands, has no mascot.

We were the Eastern High School Quakers. Yup like the guy on the oatmeal box. Not very intimidating.

Same as Sarah, the school teams are named after the school, I was in the rugby team, so we were called Batley High School for Boys Rugby team.
No Basketball or Baseball teams either, here its Cricket, Rugby, Football (Soccer over the pond)

I am looking at getting some really lightweight luggage cases so I can maximise what goes inside ... just wondering if anyone has Sub Zero G luggage and do you recommend it at all ?

No. They are awful. Samsonite and Tripp both do much better lightweight luggage. It's not as light, but close enough.and actually does the job.
I must be in the minority here though, coz I think 23 kg is fine for two weeks. Intact, I over packed for the EBTA. There where lots of things we just didn't wear!

In HS, I was a Seahawk, DS was a Spartan and for College we were Gaels. For my graduate school, we didn't have sports, so don't think we had a mascot.

We were the Whippets!

We had house names too, after 'locals' ;

Stewart - after the family that built our village
Muskett - after the 1st Head Master
Howard - after the prision reformer
Bunyan - after John Bunyan (Pilgrim's Progress)

I went to the same school as my Dad & my kids went there too.

I'd rather have had animal names - like the sound of Panda:thumbsup2

They call them 'insert school name' firsts, seconds, thirds etc depending on how many teams in a particular sport there are. My daughters school, for example, had four hockey ( field) teams...three Rugby teams....one football team.
And no mascots, although professional football teams do have them over here.

We manage no problem with 23kg. We go to Florida each summer for 25 nights and have no problems with 23kg, usually around 16-18kg each, although this summer we will probably fill them to the limit as we will be leaving Matt at Uni over there.

We usually carry around 16-18 kgs each for a two week holiday. I think it's an English thing as we've always had around 20kg limit

We have always managed with 20 kg each going out... have been very near the knuckle though. Fortunately on the way home we generally have 23kg so it allows for a bit of purchasing stuff along the way. I am always happy to do a small laundry visit half way through the trip.

I love the sound of Florida for 25 nights ... have never been able to get much more than 2 weeks annual leave at any one time :sad2:

Do they really ... I am not a follower of football I admit but I never knew they had mascots ... do they actually have people dressed up in costumes as the mascot or just a picture on their clothing etc.

Not just any slug, a banana slug. Their mascot was made briefly famous in a scene in "Pulp Fiction" where one of the characters wears one of their T-shirts. IIRC, Tarantino's former girlfriend was a professor there so it was his homage to UCSC.

check this article out: http://keepingscore.blogs.time.com/2009/05/17/top-10-worst-college-team-names/

My elementary was Roadrunners, IIRC correctly middle school was Warriors, high school was Silver Hawks, undergrad Knights and grad school was Gators!!
