The look of the Teenage Boy

I was asking the girls at my daughter's office what they felt about this "look some boys are wearing. They all agreed they hated it. Most of them thought it looked real feminine. I have to say I agree.

Most of the HS age boys I see around here in the rural suburbs of NC wear either the "baggy jeans with bum hanging out, buzz cut, and big T" look, or the " average Joe, plain 'ol jeans or cargo pants and T w/hoodie" look.

DD is in 6th grade, and most of her guy friends are not into any sort of fashion yet (except for shaggy hair). DD's special guy friend (NOT her boyfriend, I've been told ) wears his hair down to the middle of his back in beautiful blonde waves. Most girls would kill for his hair!! He is growing it long to donate to Locks of Love, and he has a dad who also wears it long. He dresses in just plain jeans and T's, though.

Way back when I wouldn't be caught dead with a guy with short hair. Ah, good times. :)

The dress of boys has changed alot. I don't have a son but I sure don't like the look I see. Skinny jeans, tight t-shirts, and long winged hair. What happened to boys looking like boys? Sometimes I can't tell who is a boy and who is a girl. That also makes me think of the long hair they have. What is up with that? Do they really think it looks good? All I think it would do is cause more breakouts. I guess I'm getting old.

I'm a teenage girl with short hair, so I guess I MUST look male. :thumbsup2 It's not that hard to tell the difference between genders. I have many male friends with long hair who wear the tight pants and it's obvious that they're male.

My mom and dad could have written that same post, only it would have been about 1973. Honestly, adults have been saying the same things about the way teens dress probably since the beginning of time. And teens have been dressing in ways that make adults uncomfortable since that same time. It's just what they do to set themselves apart. It's clothes and hair, nothing more. They like the way they look, we get a good laugh and think back on our teens years and the ridiculous outfits we wore...;)

Exactly!

And in my time as a teen, the guys with long hair were the CUTEST ones! WHOOOO!

My DS15 is an athlete. He vascillates between short, short hair for baseball/football and long hair. His teachers sometimes do not recognize him when I cut it all off.

My 13 year-old son dresses pretty much that way--long hair, skinny jeans, tight T-shirts.

He's been wearing his hair long for a couple of years now. It took me a while to get used to it. I used to get his hair buzzed every 6 weeks as it's easy to care for that way. Now that I'm used to his long hair, I like it a lot. :) He has beautiful hair--thick, blonde and wavy.

The way I see it is that his hair will probably thin out on top as he ages, so he may as well enjoy a thick mane of hair while he can.

As much as I like longer hair on guys, I don't like it when it's longer than mine. I'll admit, I was mistaken for a guy once. :lmao: I had just gotten out of band practice and was wearing a loose t-shirt and baggy capris. From the back I looked like a guy, apparently. :rotfl2: My hair was shoulder-length at the time.

Yeah, I don't like skinny jeans on guys. It's just weird. I don't know.

Absolutely!

I'm almost certain there's a "teens these days" rant by James Dean's character's father in Rebel Without a Cause...

I read somewhere that Beethoven was considered radical and wild...what the youth listened to (went to concerts, obviously, or played on their own pianos) instead of whatever composers were around before him...

And think of Beethoven's crazy hair! If he'd had BrylCreem or mousse, what might he have done with it???

Not so fast....the skinny jeans are just skinny in the leg. The waist still sits very, very low! Sorry.

That's what I was thinking!

LOL, well, luckily the boys in my DD's high school are wearing skinny jeans all the way up (think like the Jonas Brothers) and not the other which were hugely baggie (usually 2 sizes too big) all the way down.

Oh, that's nice, then.

Personally I can't stand tight jeans on guys. It looks ridiculous and there are some guys who wear them so tight you could see their "package" if you looked. I don't, but I know 15-16 year old girls who do. What happened to relaxed fit jeans and teeshirts? That was what was popular when I was in high school. My DH can't stand these emo boygirls either. I think its wrong when guys wear tighter pants than I do.

Well, in the 80s the 501s (a Levis style of jean) were worn tight, and I definitely remember lookin' at a few guys "areas" when I was that age.....

I think it will be a good day when everyone who has these thoughts doesn't take them too seriously, realizes that EVERYONE has the thought at some point, and just laughs at themselves. :)

Oh and my mom was a total hippie, I was born the last year of the '60s, in San Francisco, she knew famous people, or those who later became famous...so I was lucky to have her perspective on that! (she forever bemoaned Manson, and how he took a peaceful look with the long hair and made it scary)

Not my boys! My oldest, 19 (on the right) wears tees and 1/4 zip sweaters with loose fit jeans. My youngest 15, ( on the left ) wears loose fit jeans and long sleeved tees..Adidas/Nike/sports teams.

Both have short hair and a clean shave!

And, can we all just promise to never speak of the fashion in the 80s again? We just found some photos from back then and I'm thinking we should just burn them and pretend it didn't happen!

I doubt that will happen since I seem to think I'm in a time warp anyway. I never seem to know what decade we are in anymore since I seem to keep repeating things that weren't all that long ago. Especially with "Glee" being popular -- I completely crack up whenever I hear songs *I* knew as a teenager blaring from my teens room. She hates when I go in there and say "umm...I know this song...X band played it" She tries to convince me I'm wrong. -- :rotfl2:

I laugh because I see leg warmers all over now!!! I should stock up before they go away so I can keep my legs warm again -- however, I no longer have to wait at the bus stop, so no need. ;)

I'm thinking my DS will just be one with short hair because he wrestles and I can't imagine him wanting to bother with the hair caps they have to wear if they have long hair. He did try to grow it a bit earlier but it started driving him nuts, so he asked to get it cut. I can't imagine him having the patience to actually grow it.

I so relate to this! DS15 listens to Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Boston, etc and he looks at me like I have three heads when I know all the words, LOL. He calls it "classic" music, but I tell him the 80's and 90's are not considered classic yet.:rotfl:

My son isn't into the skinny jeans look, but he does like to wear black. I'm okay with that look, but I do insist that he accessorize with something to offset the black look. I think the pearl necklace does a good job of this. Not many teenage boys can pull this look off, but his hips really compliment the look of this dress. Also, the dress doesn't show off so much leg that it could be considered trashy. You'll notice that he is practical, as he wears sneakers and not heels. The only thing I'm not wild about are the bra straps. I really wish he would switch to a strapless bra. I think that we will start seeing this new look more, as it is so much more breezy than the tight jeans style.

I was born in 1987 so I was in high school fron 2001-2005.

I HATE the new fashion of the teenage boys in school today, I think it looks incredibly stupid. *I'm not called them stupid, just their look*

Skinny jeans are OK on some girls, for those who have the body type to wear those jeans, otherwise I think straight jeans and looser fits are great! When it's on boys, I think it just looks ridiculous! RIDICULOUS!!! I would ablsolutely never let my son go out of my house looking like some of these kids do, extremely tight jeans and long/feathered hair. I don't care if it's been a style previously, it's doesn't stop it from being dumb.

These are my kind of jeans on guys and luckily, a lot of the guys I hang out with agree (and these guys are the fun frat boy type). Example: http://www.jeans-online.pl/index.php?levis=jeans-mens-511-skinny-fit

Wow, everyone is complaining about the looks of the 70's, 80's and 90's making a return and here your son is rockin' the 20's! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

The 20's happen to be a classic era in American fashion. I say the flapper look has been too long ignored by today's teenagers. I'm so proud of my son for helping to bring back this elegant style of America's past.

I'm a guy and I wear skinny jeans, because I'm thin... not quite skinny, because I'm healthy, not skeletal... anyways, I don't mind the whole tight jeans trend, obviously, because I follow it. I never wear my pants below my waist, and most people don't at high school age. That's more of a middle school thing where I am, but tight jeans are worn by a lot of kids... it's moved to wear every guy wears tight jeans, not just the "scene" kids, or the "gangster" kids, everyone, or almost everyone, wears them. Except for the chubby kids, but even then... sometimes :sad2: But they're an acquired taste, but once you get used to them, they're comfortable.

Some people even wear checkerboard jeans, or zebra striped jeans, a la the New Boyz, who really popularized skinny jeans for EVERYONE, not just the scene kids, where I live. Skinny jeans are also typically used while either skating or Jerking, Jerking is a dance that involves weaving your legs in and out, then skipping backwards in place, and then doing a corkscrew... just youtube "How to do the jerk" and you'll get a nice tutorial!

Congratulations, you've just completed your lesson on the evolution of skinny jeans!

With the skinny jeans, guyliner, long hair, neon colors, the leopard prints etc. it's just the 80's make a return visit. I remember buying a black leather jacket with fringe ala Jon Bon Jovi in the 80's. I thought I was the coolest thing and my mom laughed at me. She said if the jacket were longer and suede, it would look just like the jacket I wore in the 60's. :rotfl: It's not that any of this is new, it's the same old regurgitated stuff; it's just new to the kids. Call me when the shoulder pads come back in style.
