The Liberals next door !

Here in canada, the political party governing right now is called The LIBERAL party of Canada , and in my province , it is the LIBERAL party of quebec that is in power. Given that right now , in the USA , the conservatives are in power , does that makes us canadian suspicious or even seem dangerous. I am asking because the use of the word liberal seems to be used in a very negative way in your contry. And on this board , when the word Lib is used , it is always in very negative way.

It must be said that we are going to have an election on june 28th , and that according to different polls , the liberals will most probably win , but there is a good chance of it being a minority governement. The Conservative party , that is now a coalition of two parties will probably be the the opposition.

For the sake of transparency , i will state that i am a liberal , but not in the political party sense. I will vote for the NewDemocratic party wich has a lot of socialist stance or the Bloc wich is a party that is for the independance of Québec.

So the question to debate is: Does to have a liberal country next door threatening to the conservative governement of the USA.

I don't see you as threatening. I think because of Canada, we can see what works and what won't. Like, I don't see us moving toward universal healthcare anytime soon because of your system. But it'd be nice if your gay marriage thingy rubs off on us down here. (Or at least, we'd get to see how it will affect your society.)

I agree but if the election rumours are true we will have a Progressive Conservative Gov soon mind you they will not repeal the same sex marriage law.

Please please tell me you never voted for the guy with the capote on his head ! Man...for those who think they have caught Kerry looking silly in pictures, they ain't seen nothing !

Gay marriages were introduced here in Germany some years ago and it didn't affect society at all. The Danish have them now for ten years or so, and it didn't change their country at all.
Why should it, anyway?
The Lord Mayors of Berlin and Hamburg, two of our biggest cities, are gay. As long as they do their job well, it's fine with me. Berlin's mayor even takes his partner to official events. Hey, it's the 21st century.

No FIK I vote PC never vote liberal ever.

What the heck? :o

I thought you have a bunch of snowball weilding terrorists next door?

:teeth:

We have those to so be forewarned we will attack at the drop of a hat and we take no prisoners that way no one can squeel.

I looked up "Canadian Constitution" on the net and found Forsey's "How Canadians Govern Themselves". What an interesting contrast to the Constitution of The United States of America. I think that all Americans should read Forsey's document. I found the part comparing and contrasting the two nation's governments to be especially intriguing. It would also be nice if more Americans would read our own Constitution.

A) There's not one proof in the article, that same-sex marriages caused a decline in regular marriages or divorces. It could all be coincidental.
B) What is so bad of children born out of wedlock? We no longer live in medieval times.
C) Just have a look at the divorce rates and you see that children born into married couples have no better changes for being raised in an intact family.
D) Alarmingly I found the statement 'Less Danish couple wait with their divorces until the kids are grown up. Not getting divorced because of the kids:confused: If a couple is only waiting to for the kids to grow up so that they can split, I doubt that the will be able to support and educate the kids in a orderly manner.
E) 8% of the population are homosexual. You can't deny certain rights to a 12th of the population, just because they are different. I know you did that officially until the 60ies, but just see how much trouble and grief that brought - and still brings.

I was only able to read the first page of the article, the second page being "unavailable".
It works fine for me. Maybe you should try again.

It could be, but that seems unlikely. At any rate, you definitely can't prove your assertion,
The Danish have them now for ten years or so, and it didn't change their country at all.

There are plenty of studies out there which will tell you the details. Go look them up.
Just have a look at the divorce rates and you see that children born into married couples have no better changes for being raised in an intact family.
I don't believe that's true.
8% of the population are homosexual.
Where do you get that number? I think the number is several percentage points lower.
You can't deny certain rights to a 12th of the population, just because they are different.
They aren't being denied any rights.

I have no issue with gay marriages honestly why shouldn't 2 men or 2 women be allowed to marry look at the number of failed hetero marriages a year I can honestly say for all the gay couples endure they will likeley stay together longer than most hetero couples sorry but that is how I feel. I am also glad that we are allowing them here in Canada and have been for what about a year now. It seems to be rubbing off a bit onthe US to as now a few states are allowing it we will see what happens as Bush is trying to push to stop them from what one news cast had a few weeks ago.
