The Liberal Thread #2 - No Debate Please

Here's the link to an interesting op-ed in today's Washington Post. I think this bi-partisan approach to health insurance coverage is the right approach. Thoughts/opinions from my fellow Disers???

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/26/AR2008022602651.html

In other words, it's got something for everyone to dislike. "Republicans have got to get over the notion that being for universal coverage means a single-payer, government system and we hate a government-run system," Bennett says. "Democrats have to get over the idea that the only way you can cover everyone is a single-payer government-run system."

If everyone is unhappy, that's probably a job well done. Nobody is going to get everything they want, but hopefully everyone will get something fair.

I'd be willing to bet that they think that ALL Liberals are Communists. I see that this person was upset because supposedly some Liberals and Conservatives were getting along for a few minutes. Perish the thought!!! :rotfl2:

Don't you know there is no wiggle room over yonder? Just like GWB, there is no "unifying" going on over there... and doubtful there ever will be. ;)

And they call us unyielding and argumentitive. :rotfl:

It's Black/White World!! There are no shades of gray, there is no ambiguity.

We are argumentative. We just have the better argument. ;)

He was thoughtful, insightful, and his "locust valley lockjaw" dialect was always easy on the ear.

Pardon my intrusion, again.:lmao:

Here's a quote from WFB that I have posted on this board before and I think it's worth reprinting. Insightful and intelligent, IMO.

According to Buckley, the war in Iraq was "anything but conservative. The reality of the situation is that missions abroad to effect regime change in countries without a bill of rights or democratic tradition are terribly arduous." He added: "This isn’t to say that the Iraq war is wrong, or that history will judge it to be wrong. But it is absolutely to say that conservatism implies a certain submission to reality; and this war has an unrealistic frank and is being conscripted by events" In a February 2006 column published at National Review Online and distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, Buckley stated unequivocally that, "One cannot doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed." Buckley has also stated that "...it's important that we acknowledge in the inner councils of state that it (the war) has failed, so that we should look for opportunities to cope with that failure

I'm guessing he's one of those communist, unpatriotic types then....

I liked his writing and I thought he was a reasonable voice even when I didn't agree with him

Agreed! He didn't whine, he didn't complain, (you would have never heard him moan about fairness),...he just called it as he saw it. I appreciate thoughtful, mature, political discourse.

Quite frankly, he always had a tendency to annoy me, but when compared to today's crop of Conservative talking heads, he at least possessed intelligence and understood how logic works. He loved what he did and wasn't interested in how many people he could get to worship his every word.

John Lewis had decided to switch from Clinton to Obama. (Know there was some back and forth a few weeks ago, but then there was nothing definitive. Today, there is.)

" Hoping to put an end to a month of confusion and dismay, Rep. John Lewis on Wednesday said he's switching his support from Sen. Hillary Clinton to Sen. Barack Obama in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Lewis cited the overwhelming preference for Obama in his district as a reason for his change of heart, but he also talked about Obama's campaign as transformational for the nation.

"Something's happening in America, something some of us did not see coming," Lewis said. "Barack Obama has tapped into something that is extraordinary."

I guess Kennedy and Kerry are going to have to think hard about voting for Clinton since she won their state? ;)

Well, IMO, that would certainly be the right thing to do. You know, this whole superdelegate thing stinks to high heaven. Fortunately, I think we'll have a definitive nominee sooner rather than later.

Although there's been a lot of venom on both sides of this contest, I have no doubt that our eventual nominee will be able to pull the party together and focus everyone on defeating McCain come November. In the general this year, I cannot imagine for the life of me any democrat staying home, much less voting for McCain, come the general election based on hard feelings.

I agree. I don't like having these SuperDelegates at all and I really dislike the idea that they would go against the will of the voters.

RIP, William F. Buckley.

A throwback to the days when even if you didn't agree with one's position, you argued your side articulately and intelligently, and you made concessions to the other side when the facts called for it. I shudder to think how, if he were starting his career today, he would be forced by "media consultants" to abandon his approach and become just another partisan talking head on television.

There's a great many people on both sides of the political aisle who could learn a lot from you.

As a total aside, Fits, are you free for babysitting in the next couple of days?
