After reading the last page or so, allow me to state out loud something I've been thinking;
In political terms, there's still years to go between now and November. In other words, personally I take nothing for granted in terms of what will happen and which party captures the White House and what happens to the razor-thin Democratic majority in Congress.
Assuming a best-case scenario for the Democrats, I've come to the conclusion that one of the most important pieces of legislation to put through is the reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine. Targeted by Republicans since the Reagan administration, the Fairness Doctrine is what has really allowed the unchecked explosion of misinformation and bully pulpitism that has allowed to dominate the public airwaves.
I'm not saying get rid of Rush or Hannity or their ilk. Far from it. As an example, what the reinstatement would do is simply require any station airing three hours of Rush to also air three hours of programming from the other side. It would also force Fox News and Air America to both alter their programming schedules to move more towards the center.
Before it was dismantled, the Fairness Doctrine worked. Both sides were heard, and rhetoric was much more civil. Time to bring that back, and enforce responsibility for those who control what is heard on the public airwaves.
