Busy day being the end of the month?

It's not the time of month, season etc. It's getting the darned FIL's place ready to rent. He's been dead a year and a half, but until we did some stuff at our house (because we needed his place so we could stay there), we couldn't really start getting it ready.

Now we've brought over a ton of boxes (probably 50) that are full of random crap that we want to get rid of and we're opening up those boxes and putting the stuff in the correct room (clothes in closets, office stuff in the office, kitchen stuff in the kitchen, etc). It's time we start getting quotes from Estate Sale companies on how they do business, and what kind of a cut they might take.

If it's as much as 50% we might just do it ourselves. We have some people that could help us and there's actually qute a bit of money in stuff in there when you lump it all up, between the furniture and the electronics we have brought over, not to mention that her mother had some very nice vases from Greece, Japan and the orient (and I don't mean that cheap Chinese crap). I'd hate to just give half of it away to the company. I'd rather pay my friends to help than give away 50% or more.

I think the question is, what doesn't get sold. Will they haul it off for you?

That's part of the interview process. Something tells me that Fran doesn't want them to do that because she has already told me that we need to have a sale at our house because we will not be able to get all of our stuff ready to sell at the 1st street sale.

Personally, I think that the interviews will just be an exercise in exploring our options and she will decide that she doesn't want to relinquish control to someone else and we will conduct the sale ourselves. However, I will not concede that until after we interview some companies. But you have to see some of the *crap* she wants to sell and estate sale company will not deal with this kind of stuff.

As we boxed up the things, Darcy (cleaning lady) and I kept saying, "you think someone will buy this?"

She would reply, "someone will"

In her dreams!

Doing your own garage sales are a pain. Because you put so much out, and so little sells you end up putting it back in.

You could try pawning some of the nice stuff if you have a nice pawn shop nearby.

Alright, Goodnight. Nightshift it's your turn.

The stuff we have isn't really pawn shop material. I already tried selling some of it at a consignment store a couple years ago and they basically ripped me off. Sent me one check and never gave the other three pieces back to me, when I indicated on the form that I wanted back what didn't sell after two months.

We're in the research gathering phase now, but we've done lot of garage sales and if nothing else, we box it up and take it to a thrift store, or toss it! Some stores will come pick up what doesn't sell if you make arrangements ahead of time.

Nothing could go to a pawn shop? I'm sure somewhere in LA is a pawn store that sell antique or collectable items. You have to have more variety than the ones near me who buy/sell guns and jewelry.

Yeah, but statuettes and antique vases, crystal stemware just aren't big pawn shop items...

I found a couple good companies to give us a free consultation.

Are they things that should be auctioned?

Nah, nothing that valuable.

What about selling on eBaY?

Too much work!

Gawd...haven't bought or sold anything on eBay in ages. Only trouble is packing and posting is a pain. Especially anything fragile.

:thumbsup2

We've got over 50 pairs of cowboy boots, another 20-50 boxes of stuff Fran plans to list on eBay, and that's only part of what is in storage. We just need one good weekend where people buy the stuff from the parents house, and get on with the remodeling. Hopefully we walk away with a few thousand dollars and them move on to the next chapter. The new tenants have already agreed to about $2500 a month so each month we delay costs us another $2500!
