...having a car!

First I must state that our family loves dining at WDW restaurants. Some are must do's (including Biergarden for lunch on the first day of our visit and breakfast at 1900 Park Fare) but there are some very good meal time opportunities outside WDW that without a car or pricy transportation most families would not invistagate.

This past week week we visited WDW. For the past 4 years we have always flown to Orlando and used magical express. Doing this locked us to mostly staying on property. However, this past visit we were unable to find a reasonable airfare from Syracuse to MCO (this was President's Week when most of the schools here are closed for Winter Break). We decided to drive and left on Valentine's afternoon and 19 hours later found ourselves checking into Old Key West resort.

Our advance reservations had us booked for lunch at the Biergarden on the day of arrival, Ohana for dinner Sunday night, Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare, and a get-away morning breakfast at Whispiring Canyon Cafe before traveling to Disney's Vero Beach Resort for a few days R & R before going home.

Since we had not traveled off-property for a few years we decided to try some of the "talked about" restaurants within close proximity to WDW. These were:

Miller's Orlando Ale House
Bubbalou's Bodatious BBQ
CiCi's Pizza
Golden Corral
Chick-Fil-A
Cheesecake Factory
Tony Roma's Ribs

First the Hits...

Breakfast seemed to be the best bet at WDW this trip as both 1900 Park Fare and Whispiring Canyon Cafe were outstanding experiences for both the food and entertainment (Character and Cast interaction). These were well worth the cost of the meal (yes, we do have a DDE card).

As for all of the Orlando restaurants we visited were GREAT! Miller's was wonderful as we all had trouble choosing from thier wonderful menue. My daughter said that "her cheesesteak was the best one outside of Phladelphia" and we lived in Philadelphia for many years and we should know a good cheesesteak when we eat one! Bubbalou's BBQ was very good with good prices, great BBQ (we did not love their BBQ sauce though) and the best BBQ Beans on the planet! It was worth the drive as it is up off Conroy Road past Universal.

Cheesecake Factory and Tony Roma's were as good as we found them to be over 4 years ago. Good food and great service at reasonable prices compared to Disney dining.

If you have never been to a CiCi's Pizza and you have kids then you don't know what a bargain it is to feed your family all the Pizza, Salad, Pasta, and soda for less than $7.00 per person. This was a great find and it is located just outside WDW on 535 across the street from Walgreen's and just up the block from Golden Coral and Chick-Fil-A (which were both as good as it gets in their catagory).

Not one of the meals outside WDW disapointed us for quality and value!

The misses were all Disney's doing...

The dinner at Ohana was the low point with being seated 1 hr. later than our reservation. Our wait staff (two of them) were unattentive and lacking any personality. Our late snack at Casey's (one of favorites) was a cold ugly hot dog that we could not even get to return due to the lines of people waiting for more of the same (as noted on these boards the roll was not the issue).

The end result is that without a vehicle to explore what is outside of WDW we would have paid much, much more and not found some wonderful dining experiences (not to mention savng a bundle on Disney items at the Disney Outlet Store at Orlando Premium Outlets)

It will be a tough choice on our next visit to choose flying and Disney's Magical Express and driving which will provide us with quite a few good choices and money saving opportunities.

Thanks for the info, Bob! We enjoy eating offsite. You can get good food for a reasonable price at many offsite restaurants.

We agree with Ale House and CiCi's. Also add to that Sweet Tomatoes on International Drive, TGIFridays, Joe's Crab Shack, Bahama Breeze, Girordando's (spelling???) for pizza and even Cracker Barrell for breakfast- also don't forget Krispie Kreme on 192. We don't live in a big city so we don't have any of these in our town.

we are also going to have a rental car when we go in august. We are going to Universal/IOA, and i dont want to pay taxi or transportation service. Plus i can take advantage of eating outside the park. How much do you think you saved this last trip in food?

Thanks for the reviews.

I will suffer through driving 2 days with 2 bratty kids just to have a car. That's for onsite or off!

Actually the kids were good this last trip. We skipped the DVD player (they fight over it) and I loaded up a backpack with a variety of little toys, paper, stickers, pencils, markers, anything I could find that was cheap, for each kid. Both had book lights from the dollar store and a clipboard. Older DS also got new origami paper and DD got a book of letters. It was wonderful. They didn't fight much and had new things to play with every time we got in the car.

It is possible to eat only at Disney and have great food, but you really have to know where to go and where not to.

Ohana and Casey's Corner are two "not to's" for sure.

Sooo many people in the fan community will tell you how great such and such a place is, and I just shake my head... anyways, here's my short, currently updated, list of places truly worth eating at in the World:

MK
Columbia Harbor House
Plaza Restaurant

EPCOT
Coral Reef (yes, Coral Reef, new chef)
Chefs de France
Bistro de Paris
Boulangerie Patisserie
Tangierine Cafe (don't skip the pastry counter and thick arabic espresso)
Tokyo Dining
Yakitori House (only for the Udon noodle soup & iced green tea)
Tutto Italia (don't care about the silly prices, the food is excellent)
San Angel Inn (lunch only)

STUDIOS
Brown Derby
Starring Rolls
50's Prime Time (almost didn't make this list foodwise but it's just so much fun in there!)

ANIMAL KINGDOM
Tusker House
Yak & Yeti

RESORTS
Victoria & Alberts
Narcoosee's
Kona Cafe
California Grill
Boatwright's Dining Hall (breakfast only)
Jiko (provisional - new chef, need to go back)
Boardwalk Bakery
Flying Fish
Cape May Cafe (breakfast only)
Beaches & Cream
Yachtsman Steakhouse
Captain's Grille

DOWNTOWN DISNEY
Portobella Yacht Club
House of Blues
Wolfgang Puck Express
Earl of Sandwich

I've left off places I like but nobody else does (we all have a few of those!) and places that will do in a pinch or that I go to just for characters or atmosphere and put up with some mediocre details. There's also about eight restaurants I've never eaten at so I can't personally comment (ESPN, Capt Jacks, all the Dolphin & Swan eateries jump to mind).

There's a bunch of places that would have been on this list a couple years ago, that are not great anymore, too, like Le Cellier, Boma, and Trail's End.

You'll notice, you pretty much get what you pay for.

Definitely if you're on a budget, buy the Dining Plan and use the above list to enjoy the expensive places for dinner every other day, or get a rental car and enjoy all those good offsite spots! Don't forget the delis at all the local Publix grocery stores - they are EXCELLENT!

Sometimes you can get great deal on rental cars if you check often. We were in Orlando Feb 9-17 and got a full size rental from Alamo for $102 for the 8 days.

Also, Carraba's is our new favourite restaurant in the WDW area. Great food, good prices and happy hour every day from 4-7 pm.
