The "I Didn't Have To Cook For 8 Days" DDP review ... 10/13 - 10/20

the food looked tasty. the cake looked good. Hello Rexley.

This review is short, sweet, and to the point!

The one thing that I wanted to treat Sweetie Girl to was an appointment at the BBB, so I scheduled to have both of our hair made into special “do’s” for MNSSHP that evening.

The appointments were for 1:00, but when we arrived they said that they were running about 20 minutes behind schedule. And since we really didn’t have anything to eat that day except for cereal for breakfast since we were still so full from the prior day’s feasting, I thought it would be a great time to get a snack while we waited.

They recommended that we stay in Fantasyland just in case our buzzer went off (in which a very perky Fairy Godmother calls to the BBB), so going over to the Aloha Aisle for a Dole Whip float was out of the question. Drat. :sad1:

We stopped in the Pinocchio Village Haus first, but they really didn’t have any snacks (other than Figaro fries) that I wanted to eat, so we headed over to Scuttles Landing, just behind Dumbo and next to Ariel’s Grotto to get a treat.

A cherry breeze slushie and a chocolate chip cookie.

The only problem with this is that I forgot that Sweetie Girl has had problems with red food coloring before, and by the end of the day she had bumps all over her body. So, out came the benedryl.

BUT, this was a nice silly snack to have on a hot day before being pampered at the BBB!

Next up: Kona Cafe

that slushie looks good. I have 2 girls going to BBB maybe I will pop in there for one.

If it’s Tuesday, it must mean MNSSHP! We get to sleep in a bit before we headed over to the MK for BBB appointments and to play before taking the boat… :sail:

… over to the Polynesian for our 5:00 ADR at

Kona Café.

This is another restaurant I had heard nothing but rave reviews about, so I had to make sure we ate there. The only time we could fit it in was before MNSSHP, so I cancelled our Tony’s ADR and moved us over to the first seating at Kona.

Now, I didn’t want to do this because I wanted to be in the MK before the crowds descended upon it for the party. But I did it anyway, hoping that I didn’t make a mistake!

Yet, I didn’t. This was the third of our favorite restaurants of our visit, and of all the places we’ve eaten at WDW. How’s that for making the correct decision? :thumbsup2

We checked in early (4:40) and Handsome took the kids downstairs to explore the lovely garden. They found a craft table, so they ended up spending their time there, instead.

At 5:00 sharp our coaster started dancing and we were seated. This is one gorgeous restaurant.

Everything about it just said “this is a classy joint.” I loved these lights:

Plus, there was this chocolate sculpture of Lilo & Stitch - 40 pounds worth of chocolate!

Time to order. Our server, Debbie, was fantastic. She explained that it was a new menu

and all about the in’s and out’s of the DDP, When I was told I could order a Virgin Pina Colada for my DDP beverage, I jumped at the chance. I decided not to add the rum so the kids could enjoy it, as well. And this was a good drink. Yummy yummy yummy to my tummy tummy tummy. I eventually made Handsome order one, too.

Then she brought over the Hawaiian bread loaf with macadamia nut butter:

We could’ve eaten just this and have been happy for the rest of the evening. My dad is a breadaholic, and I inherited that from him. I got the chocoholic part from my mom.

I ordered the Shrimp and Coconut Curry Soup for my appetizer. It was so good that I also asked for the recipe. (Are you starting to see a pattern here?)

Handsome had the pork pot stickers:

He said that these were good, but nothing special. He said that the green stuff was seaweed, so I ate it for him.

For our entrées, we decided to share the Tuna Oscar

and the Bamboo Steamed Ono

215999610-M.jpg

The Tuna Oscar was set in front of me first, and it took all of my willpower not to demolish, er – enjoy, it all before I swapped plates with Handsome. Oh, my. The flavors. The tenderness of the tuna. And the yummy fired lump crab, all with fried green tomatoes and asparagus, was a dream meal to me. But I was nice and swapped plates. This entrée was a definite favorite of the trip.

The Ono was a very basic meat-and-potatoes meal, something for those of you who enjoy your meals without fancy spices or flavors. It came with steamed sticky rice, potatoes and veggies. It was very good, but bland compared to the Tuna Oscar. Would I order it again? No. This is something that I could cook at home, and I want a bit more of an adventure with my meals.

Sweetie Girl ordered the Mac ‘n’ cheese and chicken noodle soup:

… and Buddy Boy the hamburger and fries:

I loved the way their milk was served:

Once we ate every last speck of food we ordered dessert. I got the Kilauea torte. The new version has a chocolate chip cookie outside. I was so looking forward to the chocolate outside one, just because in my world there's no such thing as too much chocolate. But it was rich enough to fill my sugar quota for the evening:

Handsome ordered the Chocolate Macadamia Nut Torte. He thought for sure that I would order this, but I didn’t. I let him so I could eat it, too! This was sweet and tasty, and he ate the whole thing. He decided that if we were going to MNSSHP, that he would get his sugar high early in the evening and be all set for the night to come:

The kids got – you guessed it – the make your own sundae. They somehow never got tired of eating this dessert. It seemed new to them every meal.

We left the meal fat and happy, flying with a sugar high from those desserts. We somehow squeezed into our costumes then headed on over to the MK to partay with the ghosts :hmghost: and ghouls. :maleficen

We’ll be back to the Kona Café. Only I don’t want to have to wait 3 more years to do it!

Next: 50’s Prime Time Café.

that all looked yummy. i cancelled my ressie there but maybe next time.

I've been looking for a place to take my DD-17 for dinner while the rest of the clan experiences the Biergarten (she’s not “into” German food, so I told her we’d do a mom/daughter meal); we’ve found it!   I’m off to book a ADR at Kona. Thanks for the yummy update. :flower3:

Great update!!!

(but I can't see any of your pics for some reason :confused3 )

Humm... I don't know why. Sorry that I don't know how to help you! I'm using smugmug now instead of photobucket. But that shouldn't make any difference, at least I don't think so.

Kona sounds so good-I may end up trying it.

Love your reviews and the pictures are great - I had to stop myself from licking my monitor, which I think my employer would frown upon.

Some day, thanks to you and others here at the DIS - I swear it now - we will eat at Kona for a meal other than breakfast. :lmao:

That's too funny! I'm glad that you're enjoying the reviews. One of these days we may acutally eat breakfast at some of these places, if we ever plan an "off" day. We'll see.

But the dinner at Kona was tied right up there with Boma. Different foods, but just as scrumptious. And they both had desserts to die for!

I am so ready for that Tuna Oscar, it has my name written all over it!!!!:woohoo:

Thanks for taking the time to share your reviews, and your pics are really great. The food looks so good! Can't wait to read more!!:thumbsup2

Great reviews so far, I also got a make your own crispy treat and it took about 3 days to eat it :rotfl:

OMGoodness!!! I am sitting here eating Cool Ranch Doritos and totally wishing I was back at Kona having the Tuna!! Oh that looks great!

Loved your review. :thumbsup2 I can't believe we still have 14 months to go :sad1: As for now, I will live vicariously through QuiltyMom ;)

Keep the great reviews coming!~

Let me tell you - every time I look at that photo of the Tuna Oscar I want to fly right back down to Orlando and get me another plate of it. It was that good! The flavors were not overpowering, but all blended together just right. It was a huge flavor explosion.

Between that meal and Boma, well, I'm thinking that we should relocate to Orlando... but somehow DH would have to find a new job first, then we'd have to move (a 4-letter word in my household!), and well, I just don't think that it would work. At least I have something to look forward to in another 3 years!!??!!

So, you'll just have to order and eat this meal for me ...

Great reviews so far, I also got a make your own crispy treat and it took about 3 days to eat it :rotfl:

I know! It took me that long, too. The sugar rush was so intense that I could only have a couple of bites at a time. Now I just gotta somehow make these at home. It shouldn't be that hard, should it? I've already got the Mickey Mouse cookie cutter.... :yay:

Just got caught up with your reviews - I am so pleased now that we managed to get an ADR at Kona for our April trip :)
