You lucky ducks are getting another review right away! That's because I have spent the day in bed trying to get over being under the weather and I've had a bit of time on my hands. So - hold on everybody, here we go....!
When we planned this vacation and decided to do the DDP, we purposely chose restaurants that we had not visited on our last trip. We just don’t get to WDW very often (even though if I had my way we would!), so we wanted to be able to experience as many new things as we could.
Another thing that I haven’t mentioned before is that we are not big eaters. As a family we tend to have smaller meals and big healthy snacks rather than three big meals during the day. So it was very hard for us to go to the buffets and not get full after eating some soup and salad. Our strategy was to try small dollops of everything and only go back for seconds on those things that were outstanding. You see, we have this thing about wasting food – we just don’t like to do it. So we start small and go back for those things we enjoy most.
I have a pet peeve when it comes to dry meats and seafoods. If it’s not moist, I won’t eat it. I feel I shouldn’t have to pour sauces onto my meats just to make them moist enough to eat, so I usually forgo them when they are available.
Day two brought us to Animal Kingdom. After a fantastic day touring the park, we hopped Disney transportation and headed over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our 5:40 ADR at …
I have heard about how wonderful the Animal Kingdom Lodge was, but when we walked through the doors all I could think of was “WOW!” What a beautiful place. And the staircase to Boma was spectacular. I tried to photograph it, but it just didn’t work out with the light… but if you ever have the chance, get over there and wander around!
Here is a 240 pound ceremonial mask that is on display in the lobby. Yes, a MASK! Could you imagine wearing this?
Here’s a photo of the description:
We checked into the front desk at about 5:30 and went to park the stroller (Sweetie Girl’s legs just can't keep up with the rest of us!). We were paged just as the stroller got parked. The place was packed, but well run. Our server was hopping from place to place, but made a point of stopping by our table whenever she was in the area to see if there was anything we needed. She explained about the foods and how the buffet worked, then we headed over to start indulging our taste buds.
Here is a copy of the menu that I picked up from the desk when we checked in:
I started with the soups because all the reviews I read said they were spectacular.
I ended up getting just the Curried Coconut Seafood Stew because, well, it was the only one that seemed the most unique to me. And because I absolutely adore seafood stews, especially when the words coconut and curry are part of the equation! Handsome had some of the Chicken Corn Porridge, and it was nice – a bit different than an average corn chowder. This was a bit thicker, with bigger chunks of chicken & potato. The other soups were potato bacon, mushroom, and carrot ginger.
I got this bowl to share with Handsome, but he never got a taste – I gobbled it up straight away! I asked for the recipe, so I can’t wait until they email it to me.
The salad table:
Here’s my salad plate:
Starting from 1:00 on the plate, going clockwise: Watermelon Rind salad. Different, good, but I won’t try it at home since no one else would eat it!; a carrot, raisin, pineapple & coconut salad, good; cabbage slaw, good but nothing too different; potato salad – nothing special here, just the normal stuff; cracker bread, and the Avocado, Papaya & Grapefruit Salad – very yummy, my favorite of them all.
But I had to go back for another bowl of soup!
Then it was on to the main courses. The sides table:
And the meats:
My plate:
Clockwise from top: sun dried tomato hummus (yummy!!), white bean hummus (yummy, & a tad bit spicy), cracker, rotisserie chicken (nice flavor & very juicy!), cous cous Marakesh (very yummy), Pap and Sheeba - a tomato & grits dish (kinda bland, and I love grits!), fufu – the blob in the center which is mashed white and sweet potatoes (yechhy to me- I’m not a big sweet potato fan, but Handsome liked it a lot!), Jollof Rice (this was out of this world yummy!); Beef & Lamb Bobootie (fantastic), Salmon (nice, moist & very flavorful, MUCH better than what I’d had at Chef Mickey’s), and in the center the Coconut Curry Pork Loin (very flavorful & moist) and the Crusted Prime Rib (nice, moist & yummy). I asked for a very small taste of beef, and that’s what I got! He was carving absolutely huge slices.
I should also mention that they had three bowls of yummy looking sauces to pour on top of the chicken, but I opted out of this just so I could taste the chicken by itself. And, it was great. The kids liked it, too. Sweetie Girl had the mealie bread, which is basically corn bread. She’s addicted to corn bread.
The kid’s offerings were mac ‘n’ cheese, pasta & sauce, chicken wings & nuggets, and french fries. Here’s what Buddy Boy ate, which looked a lot like Sweetie Girl’s plate:
Now, by this time I was FULL. I think it was because I ate two full bowls of soup and it was worth every bite. But now it was time for … DESSERT!
You always must leave room for dessert, you know, no matter how full you are. As my nephew once put it, his dinner shelf is full but there’s still room left on the dessert shelf. I like that way of thinking! Dessert is always the best part of the meal, and Sweetie Girl will agree with that wholeheartedly! Her favorite food outside of chocolate is sugar. I wonder who she gets it from?
Here are the dessert tables:
Zebra domes, fruit tartlets & Coconut melktart (I think I spelled that correctly)
Chocolate Moose crunch, flan, dried tropical fruits, coconut cake, chai tea rice pudding.
Flourless chocolate cake (on the dish that’s mostly hidden), and cookies – chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin & sugar.
Here’s my plate:
]
Clockwise from the top: Coconut melktart with vanilla sauce, Zebra Dome, Chocolate Moose Crunch, coconut cake, banana bread pudding with chocolate rum sauce, and the Chai Tea Rice Pudding in the center.
I liked the coconut melktart, but then I adore coconut; I could’ve passed on the Zebra Dome – not enough chocolate!; you can guess what I thought about the Chocolate Moose Crunch

, the coconut cake was good but a bit dry. Now, I’m usually not a fan of either bread pudding or rice pudding, but I had to try these just because they sounded tasty. The Banana pudding with the chocolate run sauce was amazing. I had to stop to savor the first bite. But the Chai Tea rice pudding? Well, it wasn’t sweet at all, which may serve the purpose of tasting the chai flavor, which you could. But it wasn’t a hit. I took a taste and left the rest.
So, guess what I went back for seconds on? I also added the flourless chocolate cake since I didn’t have it the first time. And the last item was the orange almond flan.
The Verdict: We left the meal very full and very satisfied. I can’t remember when I’ve had such a satisfying meal with so many different and fantastic flavors. Just about every dish we tried had a bit of “zing” to it that was unusual but fun. Lots of coconut, curry and sweet flavors. This restaurant was our favorite meal of the whole week, and you can be sure that this will be tops on our list of places to visit the next time we happen to be at Disney World.
