The I-65 vs I-75 debate once again

We also didn't like the overabundance of billboards through this area either. (It's not saying much for the girls at the Bare It All places when they have to adverstise they have "Great Food" at the establishment! Ewww! LOL)

Okay, don't ask me how I know this, but the advertisements about food at the "Bare It All" places have to do with legal issues. They have to promote themselves as "dining establishments which feature nude entertainment" rather than "strip clubs". It's a silly semantics issue, but I understand that if they deviate from it, they will be shut down in a heartbeat. Oh, and they can't serve alcohol, either, so the food is the only "excuse" they offer for going there. LOL

Am I the only one who is tempted to stop in one of those "Bare All" places and order rasher after rasher of bacon just to watch how they handle it?

BamaBaloo, thank you so much for the information but I have reached the ripe old age of 58 without doing that kind of shopping and think I will jest continue on my with my nice boring life.

If I were ever to test out my theory on nude bacon cooking I am more likely to hop behind the counter, fully dressed, and help the poor person out who was being hit by the burning bits on their bits and pieces. It is the mother in me.

Making it to the Hot Seat on Millionaire was about as exciting as I care to get.

Just wanted to thank Spiceycat and BamaBaloo for the info!

We took I-65 to Hwy 231 and it was a breeze! We overnighted at Exit 6 and then we were back on the road by 5:30am the next morning. We took Exit 9 (VERY nice area there!) and we breezed down Hwy 231 without incident and almost no traffic. The only surprise was dense fog, but we had no problem with it.

We did head home via I-75 and regretted it. There was a tremendous amount of construction from the Florida state line up until Atlanta and we probably lost two hours of time from the traffic and construction backups. We also didn't like the overabundance of billboards through this area either. (It's not saying much for the girls at the Bare It All places when they have to adverstise they have "Great Food" at the establishment! Ewww! LOL)

So, in the great debate of I-65 vs I-75, Alabama wins hands down! We loved the state and will take this route every time now!

glad you had no problems with ALA - Ala is getting lots of tourists because of the golf courses - plus of course when Ga had that speed trap on I75.

There are times I wish there were more billboards. I would be looking for a place to eat and try an exit finding no sign of life for a mile down the road and have to come back and try another exit.

I-24 is an interstate not a small highway around Nashville.

Personally I prefer I-65 because I loathe going over Monteagle - or the "big, scary mountain" as I call it and thru Atlanta. If you run into any delays before you get to Atlanta then you have to deal with rush hour traffic! Rush hour is MUCH lighter in Birmingham than Atlanta.

Scutapipig - did you run into any construction in AL? After reading your post, I think we may also go AL instead of Georgia - I had no idea I-75 was being re-done! Do you think 231 added a lot of time to your trip? We leave a week from today and would be hitting Atlanta around 2 in the afternoon on Friday.

there are just a couple of towns that have speed limit lower than 65. most of US 231 has a speed limit of 65 these days.

there was a time when the speed limit was 40 mph but those days are gone.

only in small towns will you need to slow down and then just for a few miles.

be sure you do in in Florida - it has 2 towns. I have seem too many people stopped to speed in either of them. but lots of people still speed.

you get into Florida before US 231 gets to I 10.

stop at the Florida State reststop for Orange Juice!!!!

TyRy, I don't recall any construction through Alabama, so I'm going to say no.

Hwy 231 really was a breeze for us, but we were up and on the road by 5:30am (4:30am Alabama time). We left Montgomery and approximately 8 hours later, we were checking into Pop Century.

I have to admit that it seemed to take F O R E V E R to drive the panhandle of Florida, but the scenery is all green and clean.

Also, the following are directions I received from one of Ducklite's posts and she was spot on with the Western Way directions into Disney. FABULOUS way to head into the World.

~Take I-75 to the Florida Turnpike, which is exit 328.
~Take the turnpike southbound to exit 267 onto SR-429 SOUTH.
~Stay on that about 10 miles until you see the signs for "Hartzog Road/Walt Disney World".
~Get off that exit and at the bottom of the ramp take a left towards WDW.
~Follow the road all the way to the end and you will be right next to CSR on Buena Vista Drive.

Coming in the Western Way was a breeze and you can see the prominent landmarks of WDW as you drive 429.

I admit I am a little slow when it comes to directions-

We are going from Orlando to Indiana and want to take 65, I have read this and now I know how to get back home from Indiana, but I want to make sure we actually get there

What is the best way???

I would think it would depend on where in Florida you are at and where in Indiana you are going, but in basic terms I would say...

I-75 north to I-10 west. Hook up onto Hwy 231 north until you hit I-65 north and follow it up to Indiana!

I agree with Scutapipig. There are places in Indiana where you would travel on something other than I-65.

Actually, 231 North will run into I-85 in Montgomery, AL. From there, you take I-85 South for a few miles and it will end at I-65.

For those familiar with 231 - I think I'm misunderstanding something. Is it all small towns? Or is it 60mph for a while, then a small town, then back up again?

It goes up and down. 65 mph in the rural areas, dropping when you go through a town.

Well - we ended up doing 57-24-65-231-10-75 down and back from the Chicago area and it worked great. We had no congestion on the way down - except for the darn tornadoes that were having a great time crossing 65 in Alabama.

On the way back we were making EXCELLENT time, and then we hit construction...three lanes down to two to one. It would have been fine, BUT the merge was a good 5 miles up ahead and two trucks took it upon themsleves to block the lanes. No one could get around and that just screwed up traffic further. We managed to jump on the shoulder for just a second and saw that there were NO cars in one of the lanes in front of the truck. Just the truck creating its own merge. I really wish it had one of those call this # to report how I'm driving. I would have instantly! So we lost about an hour there. It would have been about 11.5 hours from Orlando to Nashville had we not had the backup.

We'll probably use this way again as there was no worrying about traffic and the cruise was really easy. So in the debate - I gotta say 65 wins.
