The Hyena Chat thread: Everyone's welcome!

Good morning, hyenas!
Cool but sunny today, nice! What a beautiful fall day! :cool1:

Took DS4 to the zoo today.

We haven't been for about a year... No, that's not right, I think we went once this summer with DS8. I remember because we hadn't brought the stroller, DS4 was running away and not coming back when I called him, and then he had a complete meltdown and we had to leave early. :sad2:

Anyway, so he was doing better about sticking nearby. He still wandered out of sight, but I was able to find him quickly; and he still didn't always come when I told him to, but sometimes he did. I'll consider it progress...

It was a gorgeous day, so I took tons of photos. We kept running across the same handful of families wherever we went, which I thought was really funny.

I think we were there until around 1 PM, later than normal for us. He was having such a good time, I hated to see it end, but finally we were too hungry to let it go any longer. DS said on the way home that he was tired. (I couldn't believe it, he NEVER says that, not even when he can hardly keep his eyes open!) I asked if he wanted to take a nap when he got home, and the poor thing actually said yes! :lmao:

CHRISTINA! :yay: How are u? How was your trip to DL?

Hi Alex :) I am using my phone to DIS.

Hello!

Christina, I was just thinking about you last night. Hoping you were OK and all. How are you?

Pix, I had to laugh when you knew what kind of car got crushed. DH was impressed. But he did want to know if you knew or your DBF? :rotfl:

Bernice, I hope everything will turn out OK for your DN. Did I read his brother is autistic? That is a lot to handle for your Sis. Bummer. :sad2:

Gina, my DD is turning 15 next month. I do not look forward to her driving yet either. I've gone through 3 already, and I feared it then...................I fear it now. Time and age do not mellow out on this issue!!!

Well I need to go.

Good Evening Ladies! Looks like a quiet day on the thread. Nobody's here so I'll pop back in a bit.

Wow, really slow night!

So here was what I ate today:

Coffee w/creamer
3 cookies (yes, I know not good for me, but oh so tasty!)

South Beach Diet ceasar chicken wraps
Sugar free jello
Water

Take out chinese food
Fried shrimp
Pork chow mein
Chicken subgum (one of my favorites)
Fried rice
Bbq pork
and of course a fortune cookie!

And since I ate so much chinese food I'm just having a big jug of ice water for dessert.:rotfl2:

This is working good for me, I actually ate a very healthy lunch because I knew I would have to put on here what I ate.:thumbsup2

LOL! I remember seeing that car at a car show one time. :rotfl: Yes, I learn from my bf but now he's teaching me about sport bikes as well. :lmao:

Good Morning Hyenas! Brrrr...it's cold outside, it's still down in the 30's this morning.

Alex & Megan just wanted to let you know that QFC down here had 80% hamburger for $1.49 a pound this weekend. Awesome price!:thumbsup2 Not sure what the other 20% is, but oh well!:confused3 :rotfl2: Anyway even if you have to cook it and pour off the 20% grease, it's still would come out to about $1.60 a pound. When I find the high fat hamburger cheaper I cook it up, pour off the grease, then put into a strainer and rinse the remaining grease off with hot water. Works like a charm.

They also had 2 lb bricks of Kroger cheese for $3.99. I got two to grate and freeze.:thumbsup2

So...can you tell that I think a depression is coming? I'm starting to store food even more. DH was laughing because I now have 16 jars of peanut butter.:lmao:

Anyway I'm going to head over to Costco and get some big bags of rice, beans and then over to Grocery Outlet to start stocking up on canned fruits & veggies.

Now some may think I'm a little paranoid, but I want to tell you a little story...

When my grandfather was a little boy he lived in Galveston, Texas during the depression. Luckily my great grandfather worked for the railroad so he had a job. Many of the people in the area weren't so lucky. My grandfather said they always had something to eat, even if it was only beans, potatoes and bread, at least they always had a meal.

One day my great grandmother was looking out the window and seen the little neighbor kids outside playing. She knew that their father was out of work and she had a couple of biscuits leftover from breakfast. So she put some butter & jam on them and took them the biscuits as a snack.

A minute later she was back inside the house and seen their father come outside. He chased the little boy around the yard and grabbed the biscuit away from him, bent down to his knees and devoured the biscuit, as he was starving.

My grandmother figured that the parents had been giving the food to the children and were starving. She knew that to offer them food would probably hurt their pride and they wouldn't accept it. So instead every meal she made a little extra and took it out to the kids for a snack. That way the little food the parent's had would allow them to have something to eat.

When I was 12 years old my grandfather took me back to Galveston to meet my great grandmother. She still lived in the same house, although the neighbors had moved. They took me out into the backyard and showed me where it happened.

As a result my grandfather always kept a spare bedroom as his pantry. He had TONS of food, if he didn't use it all during the year then he donated it to the local food bank before it expired.

So I guess that really stuck into my head and I've kept a pantry. I have a feeling our economy might be bad for a while. Hopefully we will have enough money for food, but if not it's comforting to know that I'm prepared and can help out my neighbors also.

Good afternoon, hyenas!
Happy Saturday! It's gorgeously sunny here (and cool) couldn't be more beautiful. :goodvibes

I'm taking a quick break from housecleaning to say that I got something really cool in today's mail! It was a postcard from Shawna! She wrote it on my birthday (so thoughtful, on her vacation even!) and said they are having a blast, and they were headed to the Halloween party that night! :yay:

I don't remember when they return, but I sure hope they continue the good times, and she comes home with lots of fun stories to tell! :cheer2:

My family is coming over this afternoon/evening, so back to the housecleaning. Hope you all have a great day! :flower3:

Hello Hyenas,

My bf and I watched City of Ember. It was okay. I didn't know Bill Murray was in it.

We went to Nordstrom afterwards and they had a sign saying that the doctor from Dr 90210 was there earlier today propmoting his skin care line. Oh and the actual designers of Juicy will be there on the 18th!!!

B, I am sorry to hear this..try to look at like you are catching a problem that he can get help for and not like its a label....Its really not a label anyway...it is a special need. :grouphug:
I'm just sad that if he is .. it will be heartbreaking to my sis, her middle son is autistic and her oldest needs a bit of help in school (but he is doing beautifully with extra supports-- heck he gets better grades then my oldest! They are 4 months apart in age).

She's had such a hard time to even get preg with each of her boys.. little guy is a miracle child (born 4 months early, surviving twin).
Just makes it even harder to see lil one has special needs as well.

He got his casts off on Friday :yay: He was having serial casts of his feet for toe walking, he has great flexibility now! Sis had to go out and find shoes to fit his new orthotics. He will need to wear the orthotic pieces to support his ankel, it's weak from casting and he could break it if he walked without the support.

I see nothing wrong with stocking up, I have the start of my own stockpile yet again.
I find deals to cut my grocery and HBA bill way down.

Frees up money to use on things that I can't find deals on like.. rent, car payment, bills.
I cringe if we need to pay full price for anything. :scared1:

I have 15 boxes of cereal, 8 boxes microwave popcorn (freebies!), lots of snack foods, 4 bottles of juice, and a few more "deals" in my hall closet.

I miss Winco bulk area.. boohoo hooo, it was nice to just buy what I need vs a big box/bag/pkg to clutter my tiny cabinets. Cheap too!

Look into Aldi's, they have great prices and guarentee products 200% (if you don't like it you get money back AND replacement product)

Even when we run out of money, we will never be without food. :thumbsup2

DH said to please mention that I paniced today when I thought he took 1 of my 16 jars of PB to elk camp today! Actually he took a jar of peanuts, not my sacred peanut butter.

You've got me beat on cereal, I only have 12 unopened boxes. But I do have 4 cans of Folgers coffee and enough pasta to feed half of Italy.:lmao:

Do you suppose the Mormon's will make me an "Honorary Pantry Member"?:thumbsup2

I went to Aldi's website and there do not appear to be any of them in Washington or Oregon.

bummer, it's cheap!
Sorry, I was combing thru a deal site trying to find some deals at target.. hmm, coupons on single 8 oz packs of organic milk $1/1, might be as cheap as 9¢ each after coupon.. ohhhhh shelf stable milk and dare I mention CHEAP!!!:thumbsup2

oh yes.. you could be the pantry queen for the mormies. I was going to suggest looking at one ofther sites to find info on stockpiling, interesting strategy though a little too much for me to handle.
