The Disney Movie Review is correct. A lot of Disney movies are based on fairy tales that are in some cases hundreds of years old. Nobody owns them. What Disney does own is their portrayal of the story and characters. Any other company wanting to make a Snow White or Cinderella, etc. cannot use the Disney aspects, like the particular dress or anything Disney specifically added like songs, or an animal sidekick that wasn't in the original version. Disney, by making such generally high-quality versions of these characters, and by adding enough to make them original, becomes the primary entity associated with the stories, but that does not preclude anyone else from using them should they choose to. A lot of companies like to steer clear though because of the inevetable comparisons that will be made, comparisons that they will most likely be on the wrong end of.
