The heck with flying!

Never. We would NEVER drive from NE PA:headache:

My children are carsick by the time we get to Baltimore:rotfl:

I am also from NEPA -- as a kid my family always drove -- i did the drive 4 times and i have flown down twice -- i dont mind the drive down its not that bad but coming home seems like an eternity

We are from Pittsburgh and have always driven (7 times) to the world. But my DH said no way this year. Our lovely DD3 is getting to the stage that she starts talking the minute we get in the car and doesn't stop till we are at our destination. We both agreed we'd probably leave her on the side of the road in West Virginia somewhere with a sign that said "we'll pick her up in 10 days" . So to allow our lovely talker to still get to WDW - we'll be flying this year. :lmao:

I'm from NE Pittsburgh too and its still flying for me. 2 plus hours flying in much better than 20 plus hours driving. My dream still is one day to take the Amtrak to Disney. :goodvibes

That is just awesome! As soon as I read it I flashed to our DS8. Oh, that boy could give Job a run for his money the way he talks. And the newest thing - snapping his fingers. I actually went looking for the duct tape to get him to stop. :cool2:

I'm a pilot and own my own small plane

What part of Kentucky do you fly out of. I fly out of I67 west of Cincinnati, Ohio, we were going to take the 172 down but no place to put all the camping gear. It will only be about a 14 hour drive so no biggie, be able to stop in Gatlinburg for pancakes

I love road trips but for me: driving = 44 hours straight no stopping and flying = 8 hours! I figure I just should move closer!:rotfl:

Count me in!! I am SOOO done with flying!! We got a great deal on a really nice rental car for the two of us to drive down from WI to FL. We have driven this route 2 times and it has worked out great. Flying was the first option to get there faster, but with all the drama of the airlines lately and having my own flight cancelled- I am SOOOO done!

On a side note, I am sorry to those of you who have to also deal with messed up flights and people who are just ridiculous on them.

I'm driving again this Sept. (just figured that out today). Taking my parents and dad decided maybe we should drive, he figures I will save about $600. We have drove this about 10 times in the past few years and can go straight through and be there in about 23 hr. Thankfully I took 2 extra days off before and 1 after trip.

I would LOVE to pack my car and drive to WDW, but it just isn't going to happen. My family flew on Alaska Airlines this past March and it was a really good trip...so good that we are tempting fate and going back in May 2009!!! :cool1: :banana

Not me--if I don't fly, I don't go. It's just me, and I don't like to drive for more than 4-5 hours at a stretch. It would take me a minimum of 3 days to get there (more likely 4), and when you add up gas, food and lodging, it doesn't save me anything. That's not even considering the stress of a long car trip. I think if the fares from Austin went up to something like $500, I'd probably go less often. That said, if I were taking my kids and grandkids (and paying their way), it would be a different story--I'd have them drive. I'd still fly and meet them there. :lmao:

No chance...my time is worth too much to drive the 24 hours it takes to get to Disney from CNY, even if it was 4 hours closer (ie. Pittsburg), it still wouldn't be worth it to me. Maybe if I lived within 4 - 6 hours, maybe, but no way more.

Same here. I"m 21 hours from Orlando, and that's driving straight through at 75 mph with only bathroom breaks and a stop for breakfast at wafflehouse in Atlanta. Havne't done that run since about 1980. My vacation time is too valuable to waste even a day of it on travel time.

Some day when I retire, then I can see DH and I taking out time and making a 2 or 3 day trip out of driving to Florida. Maybe. We'll see.

We've logged 40 trips to WDW since 1977, in the begining we drove alot, then a couple of Amtrak trips and then 3 flying excursions. I'm not a good flyer, after 9/11, no more even thinking of flying trips anymore. We're back to Amtrak, regular, Lorton's to far a drive for the Auto Train and we never rent a car or use ours when we're there. I'd say the last 10-15 trips have been by train, we're from northeastern Ohio, close to you, and its a 27 hour train trip, we enjoy the travel alot, relaxing and carefree and does not take away our Disney time, we stay 10-12 nights anyway. It cost the 2 of us, round trip 450 bucks, reasonable in my book. Now with the craziness of the airlines, security and closing, flying never will be one of our options. Nothing beats seeing the country from a train window, having dinner and a drink and napping when the urge hits. We board at 3 am, hit DC around 5, layover till 7 and we're in Kissimmee by 1:30 pm.
How is 3 am to 1:30 pm a 27 hour train trip? :confused3

Not us.....it's flying all the way as driving isn't an option for us :sad2:. As others have mentioned, our vacation time is too valuable to us to be on the road 18 hours each way . Plus it's depressing enough when it's time to leave Disney that I would never make it if I knew I had an 18 hour drive ahead of me rather than a 2 1/2 hour plane ride. The longest we've ever driven was 5 1/2 hours.....so there's NO WAY we'd make it driving to Disney :scared:. We live about 2 hours north of Indianapolis and it takes all me and DH have just to make it to Indy.....our 2 teen DS's are better about it than we are :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:. Plus I drive a Yukon....which is by no means a gas saver......so with gas prices the way they are, I'd rather spend the extra money on airline tickets and have someone else do the driving (or flying, in our case). And I'm picky when it comes to putting miles on my truck, so I would rent something to drive....so the rental cost along with fuel costs wouldn't put me in any better shape than paying airfare. So, needless to say, regardless of airfare and disgruntled passengers, we will always fly as we're not "take on the road" kind of people  .

We have driven twice, but it really isn't an option for us now. It would eat up 2 full days each way with traveling with little ones. We want maximum time in Disney, not on the road.
I am not opposed to road trips, I actually enjoy them, but when I only have x amount of days to take off for Disney World, I want to enjoy all of them in the world. I wont go to Disney ever again in the summer when I am off of work (teacher). Just too hot and crowded. So I combine my personal days with a long weekend and do not have time to drive.

I refuse to drive to WDW. No way, no how. Even though I live in the Northeast, I have too many childhood memories of being stuck in the car riding on I-95 or having to drive that looonnngggg stretch from the Maryland House to the Georgia border (this is what happens when you're the first child to turn 16 and have a valid driver's license in my family) . But then again we were a family of 5 so it was either drive to WDW or don't go at all.

Since it's just DD and I, and my vacation time is limited and it's bad enough I have to commute everyday on the PA Turnpike (I've got road rage thanks to commuting on the 405 every day when I live in LA), it's either we fly or we don't go. I've gotten pretty good flights on Southwest and AirTran, plus I get company Elite perks on AirTrain. :thumbsup2

You couldn't pay me to drive to Florida now. :lmao:

I live in southern Kentucky, and fly out of the Somerset area. My plane is a 152, so I'd be lucky to get myself and maybe a duffel bag to Florida. :sad2:

I love the economy of my plane, and its fairly cheap operating costs, but it does get a little old, when someone asks if they can fly with me, to have to ask, "How much do you weigh?" No one wants to give me an exact figure, so I have to then ask, "Well, is it the same or more than me? I can't fly with 2 people my size." :lmao:

I'm fairly familiar with some of the airports there in southern OH. I often fly to I68 (Lebanon), since my MIL lives close to there. I've been to that Sporty's airport, but drove there to see the shop. There are some great small airports in that area.
