The Heat Pump is slowly dying :( Help!!!

We had to have our 15y old heat pump filled with freon this a.m. to the tune of $175 and the repairguy wants to see how long it lasts to determine how big a leak there is and then he will come back find it and see if it can be repaired. I'm about to barf. Why does this stuff always happen before Christmas? We had to have a new blower motor last year about this time. So, does anybody have any wisdom to share? I know very little about heat pumps.TIA

Good luck to you! We had to replace ours in August. It was 18 years old. Luckily my brother does heating/ac and we got a huge discount and it was still several thousand dollars. Hopefully you will be able to squeek out a little more time before replacing it!

Hope you manage to get a few more miles out of it before it goes . Ours lasted about 20 yrs before we had to invest in a new one. Definitely a big investment, but gave us opportunity to upgraded to a larger Trane and it's been worth it. If things are really tight, you may look into a Home Equity for major improvements as such. Sorry... we've had to replace ours entirely.. the two years before that there were several $$ repairs, new condenser etc... If it is a goner (the outside unit) remember you have the back up heat.. use it to buy some time & get several estimates... we got estimates anywhere from $3k to $9k!!!

Any update? Here's hoping for good news!

I've been doing some research this afternoon/evening and it seems its really going to depend on if the place that is leaking freon can be repaired or not. If it can be repaired at a semi-reasonable cost then that's probably what we do. I really do not want to have a home equity loan hanging over me now. I am literally praying about this and then feeling guilty for bothering the Lord when so many others have more pressing problems. But for now the charge of freon is doing the trick and we have toasty toes! God is good all the time !

So, today I have talked to two other HVAC guys who unfortunately don't live near me that say the tech that came out yesterday is full of it or at least trying to set me up to spend some big money unneccesarily. How do I find someone who will not lie to me? Anybody have any ideas?
