The Hat Has Left The Building

I can hardly wait to see the new old view again in person! It looks sooooo much nicer without that silly hat!

Now if they would just get rid of those gravestones in front of Epcot, now we would be talkin!!!![/QUOTE

I really agree with this. I remember Epcot before the gravestones and it was so much nicer. I hate the gravestones. Just a moneymaker.

Is there anything more they can do with the Earful Tower to make it MORE of an icon? It will and always has been the icon for the park to me. Was the original.
As much as I love the ToT, it would not make much sense as an icon as it's too specific.

Maybe they could add some sort of projection on top of the Earful Tower that makes it's stand out at night time.

I honestly don't know if I could come up with a more BORING icon than a water tower. I just think of all those first time visitors looking at the greater WDW maps and seeing a WATER TOWER as the icon for HS. OOOH, yeah, that'll get 'em excited!!! ;)

Our first visit was pre hat and we thought that the Earful Tower was kind of a cool icon. We've had way more visits with the hat in place than without so it seems more normal with the hat. We didn't understand why Disney didn't move the hat to the front of the park, like just outside the bag check area. It would have made a place to get out of the sun and rain while waiting and it would not have messed up any view of things. Then it could have still been the icon for the StudiosI don't know for sure but I would bet that the cost of moving it was way more that just taking it down. We will see what it is like without the hat on our next trip.

I kind of agree. I'm sure the view of the theater is great, but to me, go to Hollywood if you want to see the Chinese Theater. I'd rather see Walt Disney icons not reproductions of actual non-Disney icons.

I agree with you. We have been to Hollywood and visited the real one on seedy Hollywood Blvd. Recreating it in DHS was fine, but I don't like it as a main focal point. I loved the hat. We will miss having our picture taken in front of it.

Hey it worked for roughly a decade without issue, just saying :thumbsup2

What about a giant vintage film camera on a tripod for an icon? It would be tall enough to stand above any other buildings. They could even make it so one of the legs holds an elevator/escalator. At the top could be a museum about the heyday of Hollywood and windows (the camera lens?) overlooking the park.

Working? Yes, Working well? Not so sure.

I don't know the inner workings and decisions for putting that hat at HS, but I wonder if it was put there as part of the 100 Years of Magic celebration because the water tower wasn't working? All speculation on my part.

HS doesn't have an icon like MK, Epcot or AK. If the theater was supposed to be it, then why don't they place THAT on all the Disney merchandise? The earful tower is hardly visible in most cases, and lacks any imagination or magic IMO.

The Earful Tower was carefully thought out as the parks main icon because it is a replica (sans ears) of the one on the lot of Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. And modeled after water towers prevelant on studios in Hollywood during the early 20th century. So in that regard it 'works'.

Totally agree! Would rather see it be ToT if it can't be the hat.

I have more memories with the Theatre being the main focal point than that hat so I am happy to have things back to the way they were!

Just wanted to say that I think it has a ton of imagination and magic, and it is a HUGE nod to the water towers and Hollywood studios of old. 100% in line with the original concept of Disney-MGM Studios in its heyday. I love the water tower and I'm happy it's back. And it's MUCH more visible now that it isn't blocked by the hat. The theatre was never "supposed to be it". It was always meant to be the water tower.

It looks great, I really like the look of the theater as the main backdrop. As for the Earful Tower as the new park icon, I like how it is a nod to the old water towers which I was unaware that is what it was suppose to be in the first place. I learn something new everyday on these DISboards :goodvibes

While I've never found the hat all that moving, I also have zero affinity for the theater. It's not exactly a Disney icon...:rolleyes1

i've only ever known the HS park with the hat! i cant wait to see it without it and get a unobstructed view of the Chinese Theater.
has Disney announced a new park icon? or is the Chinese theater going to now be the icon?.

There is a very similar water tower at the Disney Studios lot in Burbank CA still in use today.
