when i was like 8 my brothers went through a huge power rangers phase and did so for several years. i remember sitting with them while they watched it and wondering "why is the red ranger never a girl?"

a couple years later, there was a version that had a ranger team where the red ranger was a girl and i was excited! a girl leading the team? that was awesome!

and then it turned out that this other team with the girl red ranger were the villains and they were evil. and i was disappointed because why can't girl-led team be heroes? why was the only girl red ranger in any version i'd ever seen the villain?

so tl;dr: kids do notice these things and anyone who says they don't is a liar.
