The guinea pig we were watching just died!

This is a terrible thing to have happen while you're on watch but it sounds like the people who left them with you know pigs and that means they know this happens. Really, they do just keel over sometimes when they're ready to do. It's a little disconcerting.

At least he died while playing and happy.

Aw, that's a lovely thing to say. :)

OP, I hope your daughter is okay, poor girl. Tell her it was going to happen anyway, it was his time to die and that you're very very grateful that she was there to keep him company when he passed away.

Yes, maybe this will make her feel better, piggy didn't die alone. We got two GP's 6 years ago, Epcot and Disney. We found Disney dead last fall. So far Epcot is hanging in there.....but I know his time must be coming. I love that little critter so much!

Thank you. I told her what you said and it made her both happy and sad but she felt that she had given him a good last day.

We had a nice little funeral in the backyard. The owners don't really have a yard where they can bury him and they are surrounded by other houses. Our yard has woods in the back so my husband dug a nice deep hole. I gave my daughter a towel to wrap him in. She had him curled up like he was sleeping and she asked me to take a picture so she could remember him. We then wrapped him up. She wanted me to fill in the hole with the dirt and then we placed a rock on it. Tomorrow we are going to paint his name on the rock.

What a day!

Life is short and we can all use some love and hugs! :grouphug:

Well that just stinks. Poor kids. It happens with them, no one is to blame. Sometimes it's just time to go.

You've handled this beautifully. If my pet passed away outside of our home, I'd wish it happened at your house. Okay, that came out kinda wrong. lol I mean the way you handled it and the kindness you've shown is just wonderful.

Also, your daughter's sensitivity and empathy are so admirable - what a great child. Empathy is such a hugely important trait and we don't see enough of it in society.

 Sorry this happened to you guys.

Wow, so many hard stories while watching pets!

Thank you for saying this. :grouphug: I knew what you mean and thank you. You made me cry. When we take care of other people's pets we treat them as if they are our own. The guinea pig was treated with the same love as we have treated our pets. This is what we would hope that other people would do for us.

My DD is a wonderful girl who loves animals and the really love her. We have been helping on a farm and there is a 4 month calf and 3 month lamb. These animals love her. She will go out into the field and both animals will nuzzle right up to her.

What a day!

That's adorable. Your DD sounds a lot like mine. She's 7 and so incredibly sensitive and kind. She's always sharing and always trying to help others. Her teacher said she's the mommy of the classroom!! She got a special present from her teacher a couple of months back because through the whole year she stood up for a boy in her class who was having trouble. One day he was being mocked and laughed at because he has problems with reading. Some of the girls in the class were laughing at him and according to her teacher my DD said "well, maybe he has trouble reading but we all have trouble with some things and then we're all good at other things. I think it's mean to laugh at him because you wouldn't like if he laughed at you for the things you're not good at and really, there's probably loads of stuff you're not good like being kind to people". The teacher said the girls just stared at her, totally flustered. :lmao: She's so mature! Sometimes it's hard too when they're soft and kind because your heart breaks when theirs does. :goodvibes

How sad for your DD that happened to her. My DD 11 had a guinea pig for almost 5 years now and while she was at her fathers last week it passed away. I told her about 7pm tonight after I picked her up and she has been crying ever since! :guilty: She loved that animal so much, even said she wants to get rid of the dog so it wont have to die on her either. I hope your DD was not to upset by that happening.

I came home to a dead guinea pig a couple of weeks ago. They are rodents with fairly short life spans. I'm sorry your child had to experience that trauma.
We are heading out on vacation and our other piggy will be going to a friends house, if it were to die in no way would I hold them responsible nor would I expect to not pay the sitter as arranged or to have them replace the piggy. Stuff happens.

I was hoping you would post since you've had extensive experience in this area. :thumbsup2

Sounds like a child after my own heart!

I agree completely. You handled it perfectly, and I have no doubt that your friend appreciates your efforts. :flower3:
