The Great Leap into Running and DVC Ownership.

Last tuesday there was a complete fiasco at school. The school nurse was out as was the district. With subs in place, they FREAKED out about Zoe's medical stuff. They ended up calling 911. I got to the school just after Kira did and in time to see them putting away the stretcher they had brought for Zoe. They were going to transport her to the hospital. The long and the short of it is that she was 15 minutes or so beyond her "scheduled" time that she caths and she was out of supplies (insurance stuff has kept me from sending too many to school) What a complete headache!!! Luckily, Kira brought some supplies and I was able to tell the paramedics to not transport her. Again...what a complete headache!!!

Oh Ann, that must have freaked you all out, that they had called an ambulance. Poor Zoe! I really hope February brings a more quiet time for all of you!

Nope decision was made for me. I have four bulging discs in my back! Having a steroid shot on Friday. Doctor is hoping the disc slides back into place. It turns out is ok. My friend sent me a save the date for the following weekend, so everything happens for a reason. I may now just plan a fall trip to either FL or Cali for a "holiday season" trip. I will just start planning my 2015 races!

Oh my! The poor kid! I really hope your insurance stuff gets figured out sooner rather than later!

Thank you. I am sure it will.

Oh man! I am sorry to hear that. Course, things do happen for reasons. Sometimes it is had to see that when in the thick of it though. If you make it down in the fall to florida, I will be there :goodvibes

Yup... it is a slow moving machine that is for sure. I have faith though.....

You are gonna have to keep me motivated to run in the heat. I tend to get up with the sun so that I can avoid those 80 degree runs. ;)

I can't say I love the heat, but I love my sleep more! I have realized though this past week, I am slower in the dark. It's been interesting to put a finger on it. But nighttime is what works for us so that means dark in the winter and heat in the summer.

I think considering you haven't trained thus far with fuel and hydration... Jeff is probably more right than wrong. However, #1 rule people will tell you is not to try anything new race day. So while what they have on the course may be absolutely all you need.... you should train with it. Know that your body isn't going to rebel at the notion of a packet of cliff shot. Personally, I can't choke it down. I skip it. I also tend to not take in much of the powerade. BUT the water... I tend to take a couple cups each station even though I bring my own. (one to dump over my head and one to drink from...and sometimes one to dump into my own bottle) Do I bring a huge fuel belt with multiple bottles? No. Some people do... it is what they need. I bring my single bottle. I fill it as necessary... and really, I probably could make sure to drink a lot at each station and not carry my one bottle. I like to sip though... and nibble. So a nibble each mile and a sip here and there is what I need. All of that may very well be psychological. I think you will have a better idea of what you need for the half this summer when it is not only warmer, but you are hitting running times over an hour consistently.

Yeah, I need to get it over an hour lol. Today was 1:01. I'm not trying to keep it under, it just works out that way based on time and planned turn around spots. LOL! I did actually try a stinger waffle, had about half before the run, and then a bite at 35 min in, another at 45. Definitely the tastiest fuel I've tried but...you would need water for more than a bite for sure and they are sticky messy. But yummy. Those I could eat.

:rotfl: Is there something wrong with over thinking? I over think EVERYTHING! Ya know how i mentioned getting new shoes. Well, I ran in them today. 6.5 miles and Holy moly the bottoms of my feet hurt. I think that I should not have got the next half size up like I did. But then I think.. maybe it is cause that is the longest I have ran since the half... and January in total my miles sucked.. maybe my feet are just being wimpy right now. Then I think about how my last shoes fit... and on and on. ::yes:: I definitely am over thinking it.

And I've been over thinking whether I need new shoes now..or whether it can wait...if I get them now I'll need new ones right about at the half but if I wait...maybe not...I over think EVERYTHING. :lmao:

You will not bomb at the 15k. You are going to make me jealous, that is what you are going to do! (and good a jealous, btw. I would never be a bad jealous kind of person. ;))

Bomb is relative, right? I still think my 10K was a fluke and am not remotely convinced the 15 will be the same. We will see. You are SO much faster on a consistent daily basis it is impressive! Still, the past few daylight runs have been encouraging. Not 10K pace encouraging but better than it's been. I'd be thrilled if it was anywhere close to my 10k. Either way it will be nice to have more than one data point :goodvibes

I updated too. :cool1:

:thumbsup2

I am feeling much better. Not quite 100%...but so much better than just a week ago.

Better is good!!

It is still a work in progress, but we are getting there! The ordered ones came...but do not include a necessary water packet. :headache: Then the manufacturer called on thursday to appologize that the samples had not been mailed, so put in another sample order. Then we received the order the next day... so I think that the first samples had actually been sent. These seem to be better than the ones we ordered, so I could see ordering this kind.

Thank goodness for supplies!

I kinda envy that nighttime works better for you. I think it would work into my schedule more maybe... but I have to get out and run before my brain figures out what I am doing. ;)

Those are quite yummy. I actually like the chews they have. The pomegranate ones are my fav...although I picked up a new flavor (cherry cola) and it isn't bad. I wanted the caffeine in it.

I was thinking about when I will need new ones in relation to the half too. I wear unevenly so I only get about 300 miles on mine...maybe a tad more. I will likely need a pair come May...which then is gonna put me close to needing a new pair in time for the half. So just like this last one... I will be more than likely running on a pair of shoes for the last time.

I think you will do great...and so what if it isn't quite as good as your 10k. It is your first 15k so it WILL be a PR race. :goodvibes

Better is good!!

Yes it is! I hate that I had a lung thing though.. I have asthmatic tendencies. I use to always have an inhaler. Since running though..my lungs haven't been bugging me hardly at all. Now though... even though I am feeling better, my lungs keep having "moments". As much as I hate to admit it... or take the time for it... I think I need to make an appointment with a doctor.

Thank goodness for supplies!

Yes indeed!

UGH! I wrote a response a couple of days ago, thought I posted and...not.

I kinda envy that nighttime works better for you. I think it would work into my schedule more maybe... but I have to get out and run before my brain figures out what I am doing. ;)

Given that an am run for me would have to be at 4:30 am, I may as well get the sleep and run at night in the dark. It'd be dark either way!

I'm at about 375 now. I'd like to get another couple of months out of them, new ones basically 4/1. That should get me through the half (I put less miles on mine than you do and I really don't think that the elliptical counts the same so ignore those miles). I may buy 2 pairs now though to be safe as my current model is on sale.

So annoying, our hotel FINALLY put through the authorization charge for the half, yesterday. So my card is tied up for another 2-4 days until that clears. I couldn't figure out what was going on and why my balance looked a lot different than it should have been and then saw that as pending. I don't understand why some CC holds actually tie things up with a pending charge that goes away, and others do not but it was pretty wacky that it was a full week after I booked it that they did that.

I think you will do great...and so what if it isn't quite as good as your 10k. It is your first 15k so it WILL be a PR race. :goodvibes

Well that is true, it will be a PR no matter what. Looks like we will have a 15K in March, 12K in April and a 8K in May so I will have some data points which will be nice.

Or not. :rotfl2:

Get it checked out! Did you ever find a new doctor? Or a 2nd new doctor I guess would be more accurate. I also have those issues. Sinus surgery helped some but certain seasons and dust cause some icky issues. I thought I was going to hack up a lung the other night.

UGH! I wrote a response a couple of days ago, thought I posted and...not.

That happens to me too often. Or worse... I think I post, then can't remember some updates...reread them and then RE COMMENT :rotfl:.

They say if you have two...but rotate them, the two will last as long as three would have. If the things were so pricey...I would have tried this. I also wish I could get a full 500 miles out of mine. Truth is... I wear them in a way that right at bout 300 miles I start to feel aches and pains. So my need for shoes more often than some has more to do with the way I wear them down and less to do with actual mileage (even though..yes, 300 isn't a small number)

OMG! I am so sorry!!! I didn't know that you putting the hold on the room would actually tie up funds. I just assumed they took down your number as a hold "in case". So the charge will be reversed and then the balance will be paid when we get there, right? I don't want you to be out anything right now... and if so, I need to pay my half to you now.

Well that is true, it will be a PR no matter what. Looks like we will have a 15K in March, 12K in April and a 8K in May so I will have some data points which will be nice.

multiple data points are great! Are you signed up for athlinks? It is free and SO cool. It pulls all your race data into one site. It makes it so easy to look things up (like when registering for a race that needs a POT) Course, maybe I am just geeky that way, but I love to see the statistics. Not to mention they color code things. So like my first races are red and gradually as I went from back of the pack to more front half of the pack... they have turned from that red to orange to yellow to a yellow greenish color and now mostly are green. (except for that darn NW championship race in snoqualmie. that one I think I was back to almost red again.)

Get it checked out! Did you ever find a new doctor? Or a 2nd new doctor I guess would be more accurate. I also have those issues. Sinus surgery helped some but certain seasons and dust cause some icky issues. I thought I was going to hack up a lung the other night.

I did get that second doctor. I need to go back for other reasons. (like a recheck that was suppose to happen every six months to make sure I was still clear..but :rolleyes1) I am hoping to get that scheduled tomorrow since I will be at home for much of the day. All in all though, I am feeling better. Just some drainage. (yuck :crazy2: I know) I wonder if that sinus type thing is what ends up causing the feeling of being close to hacking up a lung.

Stuff to share...

I am not sure I was writing this PTR when dh got his new job last spring. So I am not sure who all remembers where dh applied to and how all of the process went. Anyway... One of his top picks and places that he made it through a series of interviews was more a place I wanted him to work. (just think of what an obsession of mine is and you would have an idea) He ended up taking a job with a company that he LOVES rather than that one. I was a tad disappointed at the time. I felt since it was his second pick over the one he actually took that maybe he botched it a bit. (even though most of the teams voted to hire him and it was just two individuals who voted no)

So fast forward to a few days ago. The manager of the team he would have been on gave him a call. Turns out that one of the nasty things that this company tends to do in their software department is purge. The entire department that dh would have worked in was let go. I guess as was another department. Anyway... this manager called to ask dh for a job. They had had a really good report during the long process that dh went through... and so he reached out. Funny how things work in the world isn't it? The company dh did go to work for has turned out to be amazing for him. Had he pushed to get hired on with the other one he would now be unemployed. AND because this one manager actually was pretty nice to dh he may end up being able to immediately get a job with dh.

I hope I can get a full 500, we will see huh! I have used other shoes fro hiking and walking to that helps. Jeff goes a full year regardless of total miles (more on the cost principle) but I know he really should get new ones sooner. That said, if it doesn't bother him I guess it's ok. With my bunions and high arches, doesn't seem worth it to push it.

I assumed the same. They ran a full authorization for the amount which tied it up for a couple of days, it came off today so it's good but it was a bit annoying. Not an actual charge, it just shows as pending, and then clears. Not a big deal, just surprising and a momentary concern that they were actually charging now. And a momentary concern when your balance doesn't match the available funds amount. :rotfl2: Usually it's a pretty instantaneous thing and you don't see it. I have had this happen before with travel, once a huge huge huge nightmare with plane tickets (tried to buy them via hotwire I think, it authorized them but then the flights weren't available and neither were my funds to by a ticket elsewhere...very pricey tickets to Germany) and another on a hotel where it tied up my debit card because I'd used that one to book the room and at check in, they "authorized" the full amount even though I planned to pay with a different card at check out. Needless to say after that, I only buy my flights direct from the airline and don't do room holds on my debit card!

Interesting, I just peeked and there is only 1 of our room type left, but now they have the Queen/Queen option available as well. It's about $30 less total, do you think I should call and see if we can change room types? It's a little bit smaller room but not a huge amount. Also, they do have passholder rates so in April, I'll check on that too :goodvibes

No, not signed up, maybe I will look into that. I've only had one data point so far so :lmao: I have confession though. We totally wimped out last night due to the cold. Eric has scout leadership 1x a month and it makes for a tricky workout night as it can be 30 minutes, or 90 minutes long, or somewhere in between. We will usually plan a run that allows for 30m on that night since it's all we have. Jeff balked at the cold (I have better gear for it, it is true) and with that time frame, gym doesn't work for both of us so I told him to go ahead without me to the gym. I could have run by myself during Eric's thing but...it's weird. Even though we don't run together, or at the same pace (though recently have been doing the first half to 3/4m together), I feel a bazilliion times safer at night in the dark knowing he is out there with me. I wasn't comfortable going alone. Of course for some reason Jeff went to the gym Tuesday as well (typically a night off) and now even though I truly am only 1 workout/run short for the week I feel like a total slug!

Tonight is supposed to be colder so...I guess we will be at the gym (and I will NOT do the dreadmill, dunno why but it does a number on my shins) and then tomorrow is nuts with a jazz festival, swim meet, soccer game, so I'm not sure a run or anything will fit in. UGH. It might not be till Sunday since Sat is gym day! We do have a longer one planned though so it better not be in the teens.

I should have gone with him though...instead I started a project I should not have an in the process we may have seriously messed up our TV. As in it doesn't work at the moment.

I did get that second doctor. I need to go back for other reasons. I hear you, finally going in to the Chiro/ART on Friday. My neck and elbow are a MESS but the idea of starting a new deductible was :scared1:

Drainage. Yep, that's it exactly!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my goodness! Talk about dodging a bullet. And full circle. It is a small world, I'm having lunch with my old boss next week to maybe have him do a project for me. Good things (and people) come around and that's a very cool thing.

I assumed the same. They ran a full authorization for the amount which tied it up for a couple of days, it came off today so it's good but it was a bit annoying. I am glad it came off!! That is just crazy the experiences you have had. I guess lesson learned though with the debit... but somehow I just don't think it should work that way. A cc hold shouldn't charge the full amount.

Interesting, I just peeked and there is only 1 of our room type left, but now they have the Queen/Queen option available as well. So $15 each total less? :scratchin I am fine with the larger room and $15 more. (and with the double bed) I looked at the layout of that room and it seems very nice. We should have enough space to not be tripping on each other. AND once you read my TR, you will see why that can be important so as to avoid injury before a race. :rotfl: However, if you would feel better about the 2 queen option... I am easy. That works for me too. I mean... we are only there a few nights so I could make just about anything work. :goodvibes

No, not signed up, maybe I will look into that. I've only had one data point so far so :lmao:

You should. Before you know it you will have more. And even one is kinda cool to see the stats for. Steve has 5 races total and he is signed up.

I have confession though. We totally wimped out last night due to the cold. Eric has scout leadership 1x a month and it makes for a tricky workout night as it can be 30 minutes, or 90 minutes long, or somewhere in between. I can totally understand! I has been just so cold. Here we get horrible wind too. So tuesday would have been a run day for me but I knew I had to get back in time to pick Zoe up from dance. With new changes to work deadlines (use to be friday was the deadline and now it is thursday) I had a LOT to get done on Tuesday. So I skipped the morning. Then by the time I got home that evening it was SO windy and SO cold. I just couldn't brave it. Today is another run day and I am going against my normal course. Normally I get up and get ready then head out. Wind gusts would blow me over right now... not to mention it was like 10 degrees out when I was first up. I am thinking I may still get out today. If not... I am going to have to get on the elliptical. Cause I am feeling VERY sluggish!!!

This cold is just not fun! I do have pretty good gear... so if the wind dies down I can at least bundle.... and the dreadmill... yup... my shins don't fair well on it either. Saturday I was hoping to get in a run before we hit a chocolate walk in Orting. (since Orting has that nice trail) However it looks like it will be snowing that day. So a run might not be bad while it snows... but then to go back out and do the walk in it... I might get too chilled. We will see. January really really REALLY sucked for mileage for me. I need February to be better but so far the bit of me being sick and then this weather is definitely not helping me.

I should have gone with him though...instead I started a project I should not have an in the process we may have seriously messed up our TV. As in it doesn't work at the moment.

Oh no!

I hear you, finally going in to the Chiro/ART on Friday. My neck and elbow are a MESS but the idea of starting a new deductible was :scared1:

I hate deductibles! All of my adult life up until 2013 we had no deductible. It really is not fun!

Oh my goodness! Talk about dodging a bullet. And full circle. It is a small world, I'm having lunch with my old boss next week to maybe have him do a project for me. Good things (and people) come around and that's a very cool thing.

Steve and I are often just so surprised by how blessed we are. We may have our struggles from time to time.. but things ALWAYS tend to work out for us. So while at the time I may have felt a little sad that he didn't get the one job... wow, yes... that was dodging a bullet. I am just happy that the one guy respected him enough to reach out. He was a nice guy... and even though he couldn't put in more pull to get Steve the job, I think it would be great if Steve could help him in getting employment.
