The Great Goober Grape Debate

To refrigerate or not refrigerate

  • Yes! Are you nuts? No pun intended.

  • Nah, it's fine! Mold is just raw penicillian anyway.

  • Eww! How can you eat that stuff?

  • I have eaten worse!

Okay, Pete is at summer camp so I have to pack his lunch everyday. I have been making him Goober Grape sandwiches, which for those of you who are not familiar, is peanut butter and grape jelly already mixed together in the jar.

So here is my question. Am I supposed to refrigerate this? I don't refrigerate my peanut butter, but I do refrigerate my jelly. What am I supposed to do? The jar doesn't say either way and I don't want to poison my son. Also, should I be keeping his sandwich cold in his pack?

If the jar doesn't say to refrigerate, I would guess it doesn't need it. Is there an toll-free number on that jar? Call them!

I would refrigerate....better safe than sorry.

From Smucker's website:
Q. Do I have to refrigerate Smucker's peanut butter?

A. The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary, although it does slow down the oil-separation process.

Q. Should I refrigerate your preserves, jellies, toppings, etc.?

A. The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary but recommended. Under normal conditions, unopened products should remain safe to eat indefinitely. However, over time the flavor and color of products will decline. Our products have a "best when purchased by" date on the back label.

Personally, I'd refrigerate.

I grew up on Goober Grape sandwiches and my mom never refrigerated it - of course the jar would last about a week in my house :) .

I had no idea that stuff was still around!

I didn't like it when I was a kid!!!:(

My youngest son loves this stuff:rolleyes: I've found that if I refrigerate it the peanut butter gets hard as a rock and I can't spread it on the bread!

Me too, but I can also remember licking the bowl my mom used for cake mix and the beaters too. This was before, of course, salmonella!

We never refrigerated it....I took some of this to WDW last October and had it in the room for quick snacks on ritz crackers. We didn't refrigerate it then, and we are still alive!

It comes in Strawberry too!!!(found it at SuperWalmart)

Salmonella is way overrated. I STILL lick batter beaters. And spoons.:D :D :D

I do not put it in the fridge , we buy some for the room every time we go and have never had a problem

My DD's like it. I also bring it for our room at WDW and I don't refrigerate it. I normally don't buy it often.
