Val & I were fortunate to receive an invitation from DVC for a showing of the new Pixar/Disney movie The Good Dinosaur. We saw it this morning at the AMC 24 Theaters in DTD....err, Disney Springs.
The showing was at 10 am but the line formed starting at 9 to be checked in and get your wrist band. We got there about 9:15 and there were only a few folks in front of us for the check in line. By chance we were right behind a couple we had met last night at the Contemporary while waiting in line for Marty Sklar's autograph on his new book. (Another DVC special event, Marty talked for an hour about the book and had a couple of contributors on stage with him. The book signing was right after that). We had struck up a conversation with them then about many Disney subjects including DVC, DCL and the fact that they had gotten engaged recently. They are getting married at Castaway Cay next year. Well, today I had on a DIS Unplugged pin and that prompted them to tell us that they followed the DIS and we then chatted about the nice folks on the Podcast.
Shortly it was time to go inside the theater. When you checked in you got your 3D glasses (more about this later) and coupons for a small popcorn and a soft drink. No cell phones (or other electronic recording devices) were allowed. When you entered they took your devices and put them in plastic bags, giving you a claim ticket for after the show. We then proceeded through the concession area to get our freebies. Some folks also purchased additional snacks for the show.
From there we headed to the actual theater, but before being able to go in there was a bag check and wand-ing again verifying that there were not electronic devices. For those that haven't been to the AMC 24 Theater there, they have stadium seating that give everybody a good view. We found a spot about half-way back pretty much in the center of the row. Our view of the screen was unobstructed and pretty much dead-level. No need to get a stiff neck from looking up all show!
The show began about 15 minutes after we were seated. There were a couple of previews (which I forget already) and a very good short that I'd advise everybody to be sure to catch. After that the main attraction began. I won't give out any spoilers here because you really should see this movie and decide on your own. I will say that Val & I enjoyed the show very much and we highly recommend it. I believe Pixar has hit a home run with this one.
There will likely be some technical oscar award for this movie. (In addition to the "best animated" award) just for the quality of the computer rendering. There are times when you look at a scene and just can't believe its not a picture of an actual nature scene. The movie is in 3D, but its not the "in your face" 3D. Instead its the kind where you shortly forget that you are watching in 3D. Again, you feel that the scenes are real and that you are there.
If you are at all on the fence about this movie, go and see it. You'll be impressed.
