Val & I were fortunate to receive an invitation from DVC for a showing of the new Pixar/Disney movie The Good Dinosaur. We saw it this morning at the AMC 24 Theaters in DTD....err, Disney Springs.

The showing was at 10 am but the line formed starting at 9 to be checked in and get your wrist band. We got there about 9:15 and there were only a few folks in front of us for the check in line. By chance we were right behind a couple we had met last night at the Contemporary while waiting in line for Marty Sklar's autograph on his new book. (Another DVC special event, Marty talked for an hour about the book and had a couple of contributors on stage with him. The book signing was right after that). We had struck up a conversation with them then about many Disney subjects including DVC, DCL and the fact that they had gotten engaged recently. They are getting married at Castaway Cay next year. Well, today I had on a DIS Unplugged pin and that prompted them to tell us that they followed the DIS and we then chatted about the nice folks on the Podcast.

Shortly it was time to go inside the theater. When you checked in you got your 3D glasses (more about this later) and coupons for a small popcorn and a soft drink. No cell phones (or other electronic recording devices) were allowed. When you entered they took your devices and put them in plastic bags, giving you a claim ticket for after the show. We then proceeded through the concession area to get our freebies. Some folks also purchased additional snacks for the show.

From there we headed to the actual theater, but before being able to go in there was a bag check and wand-ing again verifying that there were not electronic devices. For those that haven't been to the AMC 24 Theater there, they have stadium seating that give everybody a good view. We found a spot about half-way back pretty much in the center of the row. Our view of the screen was unobstructed and pretty much dead-level. No need to get a stiff neck from looking up all show!

The show began about 15 minutes after we were seated. There were a couple of previews (which I forget already) and a very good short that I'd advise everybody to be sure to catch. After that the main attraction began. I won't give out any spoilers here because you really should see this movie and decide on your own. I will say that Val & I enjoyed the show very much and we highly recommend it. I believe Pixar has hit a home run with this one.

There will likely be some technical oscar award for this movie. (In addition to the "best animated" award) just for the quality of the computer rendering. There are times when you look at a scene and just can't believe its not a picture of an actual nature scene. The movie is in 3D, but its not the "in your face" 3D. Instead its the kind where you shortly forget that you are watching in 3D. Again, you feel that the scenes are real and that you are there.

If you are at all on the fence about this movie, go and see it. You'll be impressed.

Thanks for the review, Jeff. DW and I went to the preview at One Man's Dream recently and I have to say I walked out of there having absolutely no desire to see the movie. Nothing about the preview impressed me or drew me in or made me want to see the entire story. Had you seen that preview prior to actually seeing the film? If so, do you feel the preview gave a good exposure to the movie? I figure the movie is 100 minutes long and I think the preview is 12 minutes so it shows a good chunk of the film. That should have been enough to entice me, but it didn't.

Thanx for the nice review, and taking the time to do it, Jeff. Glad you and Val had a nice time. I've seen trailers, and had the same exact thought as you mentioned - could not believe I wasn't watching a "real scene" from a nature show - incredibly done. Can't wait to see it.

No Steve, I hadn't seen the preview before we went. I was very unfamiliar with the story before going in. We got the special invite on Wednesday and the showing was on Saturday. At some point in-between Val & I did sit down and watch the teasers and trailers for the movie but that amounted to only a few minutes, parts of which were duplicated from one trailer to the other. So, going in I really knew nothing about the movie.

Thanks for the reply, Jeff. I think this is one I'll skip in the theaters and just wait to rent it on DVD.

Thanks for this, Jeff!! I think the little caveman boy is absolutely adorable!

After its official first day, apparently I'm a poor film critic based on the reviews I've seen. However, I encourage you to go and make up your own mind.

Personally, I never listen to reviews. Some of (what I thought were) the worst movies ever got rave reviews, and won awards, and vice versa.

Glad you shared your thoughts. Honestly, I had watched a preview and I wasn't totally sold, but I think we'll give it shot. Thanks!

We just got back from watching it...it is gorgeous. Honestly, it's just one of the most beautiful animated things I've ever seen. We saw it in 3d too, as that was the showing that fit for us time wise.

We enjoyed the movie, but anyone who has yet to see it, be warned - bring tissues!! It was harder on me than Finding Nemo, which is saying something.

We saw the movie yesterday. The animation is awesome! The nature scenes seriously look real, not like animation! We did not see the 3D version. The movie is not one of Pixar's top films, but solidly entertaining. Plot seems very familiar, though. Some scenes reminded me of The Lion King. It is worth going to see.
